Police officers have two main jobs. They help keep people safe and they protect people's property
(財(cái)產(chǎn)). They do these things in many ways. They answer calls for help. Some may direct traffic.  Others
try to find out how an accident happened. They try to catch criminals(罪犯). Police officers are the people whom we turn to for help when we feel unsafe.  They are the people we call when we have problems.
Being a police officer is not easy. The work is tiring and dangerous. They often fight with some bad
people. Sometimes those bad people carry knives or guns. They can hurt or even kill the police.
Besides answering calls, the police also help people find out missing persons. They will do all they
can to find the persons.  Also,  when the police see a speeding car,  they will stop it. If they do not,  the
driver of the speeding car may have an accident and hurt other people.  When the police see a person
trying to break into a house, they will stop and question the person. If they do not, the person may steal
things from the house.
Some police officers patrol (巡邏) in cars or on motorbikes. Some patrol on foot, especially in parks or busy streets. Others even use boats. Most of them have received special training to do with sudden or
special accidents.
With the police, our lives can keep peaceful and safe.

Nowadays, a new term called SAHDs (stay-at-home dads) is becoming very popular. In the UK, there are 600,000 men who stay at home as full-time husbands. The number is 10 times more than 10 years ago. In the USA, there are at least 1.7 million unemployed (失業(yè)的) married men who depend on their
wives.
SAHDs have increased in number around the world. There are three reasons to explain this.
First, the bad economic situation (經(jīng)濟(jì)形勢(shì)) has caused the decline (衰退) in men’s traditional
working fields, which has led to a large number of unemployed people.
Second, the social and cultural progress provides a possibility for such a change in families.
Third, the improvement in women’s education has also given them the chance to show their talents in
work. Therefore, women are able to support their families.
According to a survey in the UK, most stay-at-home fathers said the reason for this was that the
mother made more money. The survey also suggested the men that stayed at home were happier with this
than the women, with 75% of fathers saying they were lucky to spend so much time with their children.

If you open today's newspaper, what do you see? Ads! Look through a magazine. More ads! Turn on
the TV. Still more ads! Everywhere you look, someone has something to sell.
Here are some ways ads get us to buy. Some ads use famous people. Stars are paid to sell a product.
Think about it. Do they really know about medicine? Do they know about soft drinks? There people may
be famous, but they may not know about what they are selling.
Some ads make you think you're getting the word of an expert(專(zhuān)家). They say, "Doctor said." A man
in a white coat comes on TV. He looks nice. "I use Bright and White," he says. This man looks like a doctor.
But he is an actor. He has been paid to sell this product.
Does soap have anything to do with a pretty child? But ads may show their product with something nice,
such as the sun, the flowers and so on. Such an ad is about feelings rather than facts. Ads are full of strong
words. Words like "new" and "improved" have strong influence. They can help a product sell. The soap may
be called "Spring Rain". A car may be called "Tiger". Strong words work on our feelings.
Some ads make promises(承諾). But can they keep them? No. Some ads use our fear of being too late.
"Buy now!" they say. "Selling ends soon." Check to see if this is true. Don't hurry. Take time to think. All ads
hope we will buy something, do something, or think in a certain way. Know what ads are doing. Ask questions
to yourself. Don't let their words and pictures fool you.
