Things have changed these days. Many old people complain about how fast things have changed, and they say the things in the old days were better. We all know that is not true. But there are really things have been worse.
       1. A lot of families broke down.
If husband and wife have serious problems, they no longer stay together like before.  Many children
have only one parent. The parent often has to work for a long time to make money. He can't have enough
time with his child.  Even neither his father nor his mother lives with the child. This is bad for children's
growth.
       2. Too much traffic.
The cars! No one walks anymore; almost everyone drives. We used to walk to school, walked to
factories, walked to parks, even in winter.  But now we don't. We drive everywhere. We drive all the time. It is bad for our health. And the air of the car pollutes our sky.
       3. We are too busy.
Mother is busy now. In the old days, mother often stayed at home, cooking the dinner for the children and taking care of the children.  But now they have to work all day.  Father is busier than mother.
Sometimes children can't see his father for weeks. Children are also busy.
Life used to be poor and simple, but I can't say all the things are better now.
(     )1. We all know that the things in the old days were better.
(     )2. Two bad things in these days are mentioned in this passage.
(     )3. Not all children live with their parents.
(     )4. Only children are not busy in a family.
(     )5. Life in these days is richer than that in the old days.

In the United States, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he does not
become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what “keeping up with the Joneses” is about. It is the story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbours.
The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $ 125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighbourhood outside New York City. When he
saw that rich people rode horses,Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbours.
It was like a race, but one could never finish his race because one was always trying to keep up. The
race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They moved back to an apartment in New York City.
