People usually start collecting cards because they are small and light and you do not need much space for them. It is also a cheap hobby for beginners, although for some people it becomes a serious business. In Paris, for example, there is a market where you can only buy telephone cards, and some cards cost up to £4,000.The first Japanese card has a value of about £28,000. How do you remember the way to your house? Where do dreams come from? It is your brain(大腦) that does these things. A British scientist showed that “sleep can improve one’s memory.” It’s not a dream for students to study when they sleep. In fact, your brains is working day and night. If you learn words before bed, a certain part of the brain may help you to remember the words while you sleep. What’s more, another scientist in the USA found that there was a “talent button(天才按鈕)” in the human brain. It might make a person more talented.
There are more interesting things about the brain. Your brain uses less energy than a fridge light. Just two bananas can give the brain enough energy to work for a whole day. According to some scientists, yawning(打哈欠) keeps our brains “cool”, which makes us think quicker.
Here are some pieces of advice to keep a good brain:
Eat healthy food.
Get a lot of playtime or exercise.
Don’t drink or smoke.
Use your brain a lot.

There is not enough oil in the world now. As time goes by ,it becomes less and less ,so what are we going to do when it runs out? Perhaps we will go back to use horses ,carriages and bicycles .
In the Second World War ,some people didn't use gas made from petroleum (石油)in their cars .They made gas from wood and plants instead . The cars didn't go fast ,but they ran ,so this was better than nothing. However, in the future, we can't cut down all our trees to make gas; we need our trees for other things, too.
Besides different types of gas, we can also use electricity(電)to run our cars but first we must make the electricity !Some countries have coal and they make electricity with that, but we might not always have coal, either. Other countries have big ,strong rivers and they can use the power of water to turn turbines(渦輪機(jī)) and make electricity more easily and cheaply.
We are also able to get power from the ocean tides. We put turbines into the mouth of the river .Then the tide comes in ,the water turns the turbines and then it goes out ,it turns them again.
Which of these ways will be used to run our cars in the future?
小題1:When might people have to go back to using horses and carriages?
A.When they are poor
B.When they run out of oil
C.When they need more exercise
D.When there aren't any big trees in the world

Many people go to school for a good education. They learn languages ,history, maths and other subjects. School education is very important and useful, yet no one can learn everything from school. No matter how much a teacher knows, he can’t teach his students everything they want to know. His work is to show his students how to learn. He teaches them how to read and how to think. So, much more is to be learned outside school by the students themselves.
It is always more important to know how to study by oneself. It is quite easy to learn something in language or formula (公式 )in maths, but it is difficult to use a formula to find the answer to a maths problem. Great inventors do not get everything from school, but they can invent many things and change the world a lot. Though Thomas Edison invented many things, he didn’t have much school education. How do they do all this ? A lot of things are not taught in the classroom. They get knowledge( 知識 ) from books outside school. They work hard all their lives, and the most important thing is that they know how to use their heads.

Scientists are placing robotic dogs in the homes of lonely old people to test whether they can improve the quality of life for humans. Alan Beck, an expert(專家) in human-animal relationship, and Nancy Edwards, a professor of nursing, are leading the animal-assisted study on the effect of robotic dogs on old people’s depression (沮喪) , physical activity, and life satisfaction.
In the study, the robot, called AIBO, is placed for six weeks in the houses of some old people who live alone. Before placing AIBO in the home, scientists will collect baseline data(數(shù)據(jù)) for six weeks. These old people will keep a diary to note their feelings and activity before and after AIBO. Then, the scientists will review the data to test if it has produced any changes in the life of its owner.
“I talk to him all the time, and he responds to my voice,” says a seventy-year-old lady. “When I’m watching TV, he’ll stay in my arms until he wants down. He has his own mind.”
The AIBOs respond to certain orders. The scientists say they have some advantages over live dogs, especially for old people. Often the elderly are disabled and cannot care for an animal by walking it or playing with it. A robotic dog removes exercise and feeding concerns.
“At the beginning, it was believed that no one would relate(與……相關(guān)) to the robotic dog, because it was metal and not furry.” Beck says. “Hopefully, down the road, these robotic pets could become a more-valuable health helper. They will record their masters’ blood pressure, oxygen levels or heart rhythms(心律). AIBOs may even one day have games that can help stimulate(刺激) older people’s minds.”

We often find that weekends and holidays feel so short while classes and work feel so long. Actually, though,
we know that this is not true. But we still wonder where that strange feeling comes from.
In fact, this is one of the ways that we're tricked by time, according to the website All That Is Interesting. The website lists several wrong impressions we often have about time. Let's have a look.
First of all, emotions affect our time-keeping abilities: Negative emotions, especially anxiety and boredom, make time seem longer because they make us concentrate more on the passage of time. However, when we are enjoying ourselves, we pay more attention to what we are doing and are likely to lose track of(失去對….的意識) time.
Here is another example. In 2007, a group of scientists carried out a test. In the test, people fell 50 meters into a safety net and were then asked about their experience. Although the experience took shorter than 3 seconds, the people thought it was much longer than it actually was.
This is because of the way our bodies reply to danger, according to the scientists. Our bodies produce a chemical called adrenaline (腎上腺素) when we are faced with danger. It allows us to concentrate better so that we can stay alive. As a result, we are able to remember far more details(細(xì)節(jié))over a short period of time, which makes it seem like time is going more slowly.
Another situation when we make mistakes about time is when we take afternoon naps(午覺). Have you ever had trouble telling what time it is after a long nap? That's because the best amount of time for a nap is 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, you enter a new stage of sleep called slow-wave sleep. If you wake up mid-way in this stage, it will take a while before you can correctly perceive(感知) time again.
Yes, time can be mysterious and there is no way to control it So, perhaps the best thing to do is to make good use of every minute.
小題1: According to the passage, what possibly makes people feel so long ?
A.weekends and holidaysB.weekends and work
C.classes and workD.holidays and work
小題2:Which is NOT the wrong impressions that we often have about time according to the website listing?
A.negative emotionsB.positive emotions
C.a(chǎn)drenaline D.scientists
小題3:According to the passage, in which situation do we make mistakes about time?
A.We have many problems left in the test paper, but the time is up.
B.We have a math test when we fall down from a high place.
C.We may have trouble telling what time it is after a long nap.
D.We go to school on the school bus as usual on weekdays.
小題4:According to the passage , what will NOT happen when we are faced with danger ?
A.Our bodies will produce a chemical called adrenaline.
B.We are able to feel that time seems to go more slowly.
C.Adrenaline will make us concentrate better to stay alive.
D.We will forget far more details over a short period of time.
小題5:Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage ?
A.Negative emotions, especially anxiety and boredom, make time seem longer because they make us concentrate more on the passage of time.
B.When we are enjoying ourselves, we pay more attention to what we are doing and we are able to feel like time is going more slowly.
C.If we wake up mid-way after a long nap, it will take a while before we can correctly perceive time again
D.Time can be mysterious and there is no way to control it. So, perhaps the best thing to do is to make good use of every minute.
