Hello, everyone. Because of the high rate of school violence (暴力) in some areas, teenagers’ safety becomes a serious problem. We are planning to set up an organization, or you can call it a group --- School Watch. It makes sure that students have a safe school environment. Please be part of our plan!
What is School Watch?
School Watch is a volunteer project in our school. It helps us stop violence and improve the quality of school life. It will keep yourself and your schoolmates safe. The other members of School Watch care for you and your classroom, and you do the same for them.
Is it for everyone?
Anybody can become a member of School Watch because everyone has something to offer.
What else can it do?
School Watch makes it possible for us not only to help each other but also to make friends with each other. Some members may offer to help the schoolmates who have problems with their homework.
Who will be the School Watcher?
Our school will look for the School  Watcher and give him or her lots of prizes. You could be the one!
How do you join it?

Americans are very direct people. When they want something, they say“Yes”, and when they don’t, they say “No”.If they want something different from what is given, they ask for it.  Here’s an example : I arrive at someone’s house and he or she gives me wine, but I don’t want wine. Maybe I don’t like it or maybe I just don’t want it. I will say “No thanks”. If everyone around me is drinking something, I would ask  for something else,“No thanks. But I’ll take a bit of tea if you have some.” It’s a polite way to ask something you really want. If I really want wine, I just say “Yes, thank you”. If you are one of those who want to know how to increase your vocabulary, there are some ways you may find useful. In fact, it is not that difficult to learn new words, but to remember them for a lifetime seems not to be so easy.
To make it easier, you can try word associations(聯(lián)想). Try to find a connection between a new word and things or people you know. For example, if your neighbour is an unselfish person who cares about the needs of other people, think about this person every time you see the word, and very soon you'll start actively using it.
Try to use the words you learn as often as possible. Perhaps you are not sure which situations they should be used in, or whether you pronounce(發(fā)音) them correctly, but practice is the best way to understand that. It is not enough to find out the meaning of a word. You should hammer (敲打) it into your mind by using it in actual conversations in everyday life.
Also, it may be helpful to know the meaning of the word roots, prefixes (前綴) and suffixes (后綴), especially if they have a Greek or Latin origin(起源). Even if you meet a long unfamiliar word, it will be easy to know its meaning if you know the general meaning of its parts.  For example, if you see the word "philanthropy", it won't be difficult to surmise what it means if you know that "anthropo" means "human" and "philo" means "loving". Not only can ancient Greek and Latin be helpful, but a number of modern languages as well. So, if you speak French,  Italian, Spanish or Portuguese, guess the meaning of an unfamiliar English word if it sounds like  a word from another language you know.
【小題1】 Which of the following old sayings can show the main idea of Paragraph 3?

A.Every dog has his day.
B.Practice makes perfect.
C.Every coin has two sides.
D.Where there is a will there is a way.
【小題2】 According to the last paragraph, what does the writer think is important?
A.Learning to use several different modern languages.
B.Learning some very difficult words in the English language.
C.Knowing the meaning of the word roots, prefixes and suffixes.
D.paying more attention to words that have a Greek or Latin origin.
【小題3】The underlined word "surmise" in the last paragraph means_______.
A.guess B.suggest
C.prove D.remember
【小題4】 what's the writer's purpose in writing the passage?
A.To tell us how he or she learnt English well.
B.To explain why it is not hard to learn new words.
C.To prove that learning new words can be really fun.
D.To tell us some good ways of remembering new words.

Andrew Matthews, an Australian writer, tells us that making your dreams real is life’s biggest challenge. You may think you’re not very good at some school subjects, or that it’s impossible for you to become a writer.  【小題2】
【小題3】 The first thing you must do is to remember what your dream is. Don’t let it leave your heart. Keep telling yourself what you want every day and then your dream will come true faster. You should know that a big dream is, in fact, made up of many small dreams.
【小題4】There will be difficulties on the road to your dream. But the biggest difficulty comes from yourself.    【小題5】 Studying instead of watching TV will help you get better exam results, while saving five yuan instead of buying an ice cream means you can buy a new book.

There are over 800 boarding (寄宿) schools in the UK with students from home and foreign countries. Boarding schools started hundreds of years ago in the country. But the earliest boarding schools were set up for white, rich boys only. Now both boys and girls can go to boarding schools from the age of 7 to 18.
What to do
In the UK, boarding schools have three terms in a school year, with about 13 weeks in each term. Students study and live together. They can’t go outside if they are not allowed to. In some schools, each student has his or her subject plan. Besides the usual classrooms and laboratories, the boarding schools have lots of other facilities for their students, including music rooms, boats, swimming pools, cinemas and theatres. Most boarding schools have a “l(fā)ight out” time. So when it’s time to go to bed, all the lights in the bedrooms are turned off. There are house-masters to take care of students all the time, especially after school hours.
What to wear
Nearly all students at boarding schools wear a school uniform. Boys usually wear a shirt and a tie, and girls wear a white blouse, sometimes also a tie and a skirt. As students get older, the rules become less strict.

In the UK, boarding schools provide students with delicious food. They can choose to have a full English breakfast or simply bread. They can also choose between a meal with no meat and another meal at lunch and dinner. And there is always self-service for salad (沙拉), other side dishes and a dessert. Students can also make themselves something to eat at any time in a kitchen, or drink tea or have a snack between meals.
【小題1】Which of the following is TRUE according to (根據(jù)) the passage?

A.Only white children were allowed to attend the earliest boarding schools.
B.Students in a boarding school are looked after only after school hours.
C.As students get older, the rules about wearing school uniforms become stricter.
D.Students can have different activities in a boarding school.
【小題2】Which is the best title for the last paragraph?

A.教師 B.設(shè)施 C.活動(dòng) D.課程

It was New Year’s Night. An aged man was standing at a window. He raised his mournful eyes towards the deep blue sky, where the stars were floating like white lilies on the surface of a clear calm lake.
He had already passed sixty and brought from his journey nothing but errors and regrets. Now his health was poor, his mind vacant and his heart sorrowful.
The days of his youth appeared like dreams before him, and he recalled the serious moment when his father placed him at the entrance of the two roads- one leading to a peaceful, sunny place, covered with flowers, fruits and filled with soft, sweet songs; the other leading to a deep, dark cave, which was endless, where poison flowed instead of water and devils and poisonous snake hissed ( 發(fā)嘶嘶聲) and crawled (爬, 爬行).
He saw the lights flowing away in the darkness. These were the days of his wasted life; he saw a star fall from the sky and disappeared, and this was the symbol of himself. His regret like a sharp arrow struck deeply into his heart. Then he remembered his friends in his childhood. But they had made their way to success and were now honoured and happy on this night.
The high church clock struck and the sound made him remember his parents’ early love for him. They had taught him and prayed for his good. But he chose the wrong way. With shame and grief he dared no longer look towards that heaven. His darkened eyes were full of tears, and with a despairing effort, he burst out a cry: “Come back, my early days!”
His youth did return, for all this was only a dream which he had on New Year Night. He was still young though his faults were real; he had not yet entered the deep, dark cave, and he was still free to walk on the road which leads to the peaceful and sunny land.
Those who still wander on the entrance of life, hesitating to choose the bright road, remember that when years are passed and your feet stumble (絆腳) on the dark mountains, you will cry bitterly, but in vain(徒勞): “ Oh youth, return! Oh give me back my early days!”

A.He wants to tell people it’s time to recall the past
