A gentleman(紳士)put an advertisement(廣告)in a newspaper for a boy to work in his office. From nearly fifty persons, he chose one and refused the others.

I should like to know, said a friend, why you preferred that boy. He did not have a letter or a recommendation(介紹信).

You are wrong, said the gentleman,he had many. He cleaned his feet at the door and closed the door behind him. That showed he was careful. He give his seat at once to that old man. That showed he was kind and thoughtful. He took off his cap when he came in and answered my question promptly(敏捷地). That showed he was polite and gentlemanly.

I threw some books on the floor and some persons stepped(踩)over them, but that boy picked them up and put them on the table. He waited quietly for his turn instead of pushing. When I talked to him, I found his clothes were tidy, his hair was brushed clearly and his finger nails were clean. I think these are more important than a letter and recommendation.

Some people bring out the best in you in a way that you might never have fully realized on your own.My mom was one of those people.

My father died when I was nine months old, making my mom a single mother at the age of eighteen. While I was growing up, we lived a very 1 life.We had little money, but my mom gave me a lot of love. Each night, she sat me on her lap and spoke the words that would 2 my life, “Kemmons, you are certain to be a great man and you can do anything in life if you work hard enough to get it.”

At fourteen, I was hit by a car and the doctors said I would never 3 again.Every day, my mother spoke to me in her gentle, loving voice, telling me that no matter what those doctors said, I could walk again if I didn’t want to be bad enough. She 4 that message so deep into my heart that I finally believed her.A year later, I returned to school-walking on my own!

When the Great Depression(大蕭條) 5 , my mom lost her job. Then I left school to support(支撐)both of us.At that moment, I decided never to be 6 again.

Over the years, I experienced various levels of business success. But the real 7 point happened on a vacation I took with my wife and five kids in 1916.I was dissatisfied with the second-class hotels for families and was angry that they charged(收費)an extra $2 for each child. That was too 8 for most American families.I told my wife that I was going to open a hotel for families that would never charge extra for 9 。There were plenty of doubters at that time.

Not 10 , mom was one of my strongest supporters. She worked behind the desk and even designed the room style. As in any business, we experienced a lot of hard time. But with my mother’s words deeply rooted in my heart, I 11 doubted we would succeed.Fifteen years later, we had the largest hotel system in the world-Holiday Inn.In 1979 my company had 1,759 inns in more than fifty countries with an income of $1 billion a year.

You may not have started out life in the best situations. But if you can find a 12 in life worth working for and believe in yourself, nothing can stop you.

Sometimes I really doubt whether there is love between my parents. Every day they are very busy trying to earn money in order to pay the high tuition for my brother and me. They don’t act in the romantic ways that I read in books or I see on TV. In their opinion, “I love you” is too luxurious for them to say. Sending flowers to each other on Valentine’s Day is even more out of the question. Finally my father has a bad temper. When he’s very tired from the hard work, it is easy for him to lose his temper.
One day, my mother was sewing a quilt. I silently sat down beside her and looked at her.
“Mom, I have a question to ask you,” I said after a while.
“What?” she replied, still doing her work.
“Is there love between you and Dad?” I asked her in a very low voice.
My mother stopped her work and raised her head with surprise in her eyes. She didn’t answer immediately. Then she bowed her head and continued to sew the quilt.
I was very worried because I thought I had hurt her. I was in a great embarrassment and I didn't know what I should do. But at last I heard my mother say the following words:
“Susan,” she said thoughtfully, “Look at this thread. Sometimes it appears, but most of it disappears in the quilt. The thread really makes the quilt strong and durable. If life is a quilt, then love should be a thread. It can hardly be seen anywhere or anytime, but it’s really there.”
I listened carefully but I couldn’t understand her until the next spring. At that time, my father suddenly got sick seriously. My mother had to stay with him in the hospital for a month. When they returned from the hospital, they both looked very pale. It seemed both of them had had a serious illness.
After they were back, every day in the morning and dusk, my mother helped my father walk slowly on the country road. My father had never been so gentle. It seemed they were the most harmonious couple. Along the country road, there were many beautiful flowers, green grass and trees. The sun gently glistened through the leaves. All of these made up the most beautiful picture in the world.
Once I thought love meant flowers, gifts and sweet kisses. But from this experience, I understand that love is just a thread in the quilt of our life, making life strong and warm.
