When you cough or sneeze, you'd better turn your head away from others and
cover your mouth with the full part of your hand. And then, you should say, "Excuse
me".
This seems so simple, but it is surprising how many kids have never been told to
do this. Actually, I notice adults all the time who cough and sneeze in public without
placing a hand over the mouth. One important thing I point out to the kids is that after
they sneeze or cough on their hands, they should wash their hands as soon as possible.
If not, they will be passing those germs (細(xì)菌) along to everything and everyone they
 touch.
If you come to a door and someone is following you, hold the door. If the door
opens by pulling, pull it open, stand to the side, and allow the other person to pass
through first, thenyou can walk through. If the door opens by pushing, hold the door
 after you pass through.
After a few weeks of seeing kids try to get through doors in the school and
watching them enter restaurants as the door hit other people, I knew I had to discuss
the problem with my students. Teaching them small acts of kindness, such as letting
someone else go through a door first as they hold it open, may seem unimportant, but
it can go a long way toward helping students realize how to be polite and thank others.
Once they've been told, they're halfway there.
When we have to go up moving stairs,we will stand to the right. That will give
others who are in a hurry a choice of walking up the left-hand side of the moving stais.
When we are going to entera lift, the underground,or  a doorway, we will wait for
others to exit before we enter.
After college when I moved to London, I was surprised at how polite everyone was
in the subways. I was even more touched when I traveled to Japan. In both places,
people made effort to make way for others. On moving stairs, everyone stood to the
right and walked to the left. On lifts, everyone would stand over to the side and allow
others to exit before they would begin to enter.

A. touch everything
B. cover your mouth
C. point out to the kids

2. If you come to a door and someone is following you,  you'd better _______.
A. hold the door
B. pass through
C. close the door

Over the last 70 years, researchers have been studying happy and unhappy people and finally found out
ten factors that make a difference. Our feelings of well-being at any moment are decided to a certain degree by
genes. However, of all the factors,wealth and age are the top two.
Money can buy a degree of happiness. But once you can afford to feed, clothe and house yourself, each
extra dollar makes less and less difference.
Researchers find that, on average, wealthier people are happier.  But the link between money and happiness
is complex (復(fù)雜的).  In the past half-century, the average income (平均收入)  has sharply increased in
developed countries, yet happiness levels have remained almost the same. Once your basic needs are met,
money only seems to increase happiness if you have more than your friends, neighbors and colleagues.
"Dollars buy status (social position), and status makes people feel better," say some experts, which helps
explain why people who can seek status in other ways, scientists or actors, for example, may happily accept
relatively poorly-paid jobs.
In a research, Professor Alex Michalos found that the people whose desires (欲望) , not just for money,
but for friends, family, job, health, rose furthest beyond what they already had, tended to be less happy than
those who felt a smaller gap (差距).  Indeed, the size of the gap predicted happiness about five times better
than income alone.  "the gap measures just blow away the measures of only income." says Michalos.
Another factor that has to do with happiness is age.  Old age may not be so bad "Civen all the problems of
aging,  how could the elderly be more satisfied?" asks Professor Laura Carstensen.  In one survey, Carstensen
interviewed 184 people between the ages of 18 and 94, and asked them to fill out an emotion questionnaire.
She found that old people reported positive emotions just as often as young people. Some scientists suggest
older people may expect life to be harder and learn to live with it, or they're more realistic about their time
running out. Older people have learned to focus on things that make them happy and let go of those that don't.
"People realize not only what they have, but also that what they have cannot last forever," she says.  "A
goodbye kiss to a husband or wife at the age of 85, for example, may bring far more complex emotional
responses than a similar kiss to a boy or girl friend at the age of 20. "

A. make them feel much better
B. provide chances to make friends
C. improve their social position
D. satisfy their professional interests
2. Professor Alex Michalos found that people feel less happy if _________.

B. they have a stronger desire for friendship
C. the hope for good health is much greater
D. their income is far below their expectation
3. We can infer from the passage that older people _________.
A. would like to have more goodbye kisses than young people

What are emotions? As far as we know, human beings have always had emotions. Poets write about them,
singers sing about them, and lovers and friends talk about them. We know that we can 'control' emotions,
express' emotions and ' feel' emotions. Is it possible that we can smell emotions? Are we able, like some
animals, to smell fear?
Sometimes you can see what emotions a person is feeling. When people are happy, they smile; when they
are sad, they might cry; when they are angry, their faces might turn red; when they are feeling shy, they might
sweat (出汗). These are all physical reactions (反應(yīng)), so can we say that emotions are physical reactions to
something in our lives?
The problem is that emotions don't always include physical reactions that we can see. Some people are
good at hiding their emotions, and different people can have different physical reactions to the same emotion.
Some people's faces, for example, go white when they are angry and some people's faces turn red. Some
people go quiet when they are angry and some people shout.
Sometimes there is a physical reaction that we can't see. For example, a person might he nervous and feel
sick inside, but other people might not be able to see that We might be able to see or smell emotions, but we
can't touch them. Can we describe them? In one way we can describe emotions. Everybody has some idea
what 'happy' and 'sad' mean. But in another way it is difficult to describe emotions. Is the way you 'love' your
pet, your family, your friend, or your husband and wife the same? I always think it is strange in English that
we often write 'love' at the bottom of a Christmas card or a letter to a relative we hardly know or hardly ever
see. We might write 'love' al the bottiom of a letter to someone of the opposite sex (性別) who is just a friend,
but we wouldn't write 'love' at the bottom of a letter to somebody of the same sex even if we know that friend
much better.
Some people say that emotions are just a chemical reaction, but I don't want to believe that. I don't know
what they are, but life would be boring without them.
1. According to the passage, because you can 'express' emotions, _______.
A. your face might turn red when you feel shy.
B. you might know it when you're in danger.
C. you might smile when you're happy.
D. you are good at hiding your emotions.
2. Which reaction is NOT mentioned when people are angry?
A. Their faces turn white or red.
B. They don't seem to like to talk to others.
C. They often talk to people in a loud voice.
D. They write to their friends or relatives.
3. Which of the following is 'IRUE'?
A. Emotions only include physical reactions.
B. We can hardly see a person's feelings from his face.
C. We might smell or see emotions, but we can't touch them.
D. We write 'love' at the bottom of the letter to our closest friends.
4. In the writer's opinion, what is 'emotion'?
A. It's hard to say what it is.
B. It is just a chemical reaction.
