What is an e–reader? An e–reader is a small computer. It can hold thousands

of e–books. So people want to throw away heavy schoolbags and read with small, light e–readers.

For example, a US high school has put its paper books away. Teachers and students are using e–readers now. “It’s so convenient. You can have so many books right at your fingertips.” said Meghan Chenausky,16.

Chinese schoolchildren are also trying e–readers. Hanvon WISEreader is the most popular e–reader in China. It weighs about 260g and is as big as a regular textbook. It is a special e–reader. Students can make notes on it. They can use it to download textbooks from school computers. It can also send and receive homework.

New e–readers are not just for reading. They have WI-FI(無線網(wǎng)絡(luò)) and multimedia(多媒體).Parents think these may hurt children’s study habits. “I think WI-FI is not necessary for kids.” says Zeng Wenwen,43, Beijing.

    根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,判斷下列句了正誤。正確為“T”,錯(cuò)誤為“F”。并在答題卡上把“T”或“F”涂黑。

1.An e–reader can keep thousands of e–books.

2.An e–reader can help to make schoolbags lighter than before.

3.In every US school, e–readers are used instead of paper textbooks.

4.The passage mainly introduces the size of an e–reader.

5.A different opinion is against the WI-FI and multimedia of e–readers.

Gordon Williams’s hobby may seem strange to people when they meet it for the first time. But it is a traditional craft(手藝).He builds model ships inside old bottles.

Gordon has always loved ships, especially sailing ships from the old days. His interest in this hobby began many years ago when he visited a museum in Ottawa, Canada, where there was a display of model ships in bottles. Gordon thought the display was wonderful. But he wondered how the craftsman got the ship through the thin neck of the bottle. Gordon decided to find it out.

He found an old master craftsman who was willing to teach him the necessary skills. First, Gordon takes an old bottle. Then he puts in a layer of putty(一層油灰),carefully shaped and painted it look like the sea. Next he builds the ship. In Chicago, a computerized system has been developed that controls(管理)traffic on the city’s 235 miles of seven expressways. Now one—a controller—can follow the movement of Chicago’s traffic by looking at a set of lights. The system uses electric sensors(感應(yīng)器) that are built into each expressway, every half a mile. Several times a second, the computer receives information from each sensor and translates it into green, yellow or red lights on a map in the control room. A green light means traffic is moving forty-five miles an hour, yellow means thirty to forty-five miles an hour, and red means heavy traffic—cars standing still or moving less than thirty miles an hour.

“See that red light near Austin Avenue?”the controller asked a visitor.“That’s a repair truck fixing the road, and the traffic has to go around it.”At the Roosevelt Road entrance to the expressway, the light kept changing from green to red and back to green again.“A lot of trucks get on the expressway there,”the controller explained.“They can’t speed up as fast as cars.”The sensors show immediately where an accident or a stopped car is blocking the traffic, and a truck is sent by radio to clear the road. The system has lowered the number of accidents by 18 percent. There are now 1.4 deaths on Chicago’s expressway for each one hundred million miles traveled, while in other parts of the county there are 2.6.

Traffic experts say that the Chicago system is the “coming thing”.Systems like Chicago’s are already in use on some expressways in Los Angeles and Houston.“Chicago has taken the lead,”said New York City’s traffic director and he added,“Chicago’s a good example.”
