　　These days, most people in Britain(英國(guó))and the US do not wear formal(正式的)clothes．But sometimes it is important to wear the right thing．Many British people don’t think about clothes very much．When they go out to enjoy themselves, they can wear almost(幾乎)anything．At theatres(劇院)，cinemas and concerts(音樂會(huì))you can put on anything you like：from beautiful suits and dresses to jeans and sweaters．Anything goes, as long as you look clean and tidy．But in Britain, as well as in the US, men in offices usually wear suits and ties and women wear dresses or skirts(not trousers)．Doctors and business people always wear quite formal clothes．And in some hotels and restaurants men have to wear ties and women have to wear tidy dresses．

　　In many ways, Americans are less formal than British people, but they are more careful with their clothes．At home, or on holiday, most Americans wear informal(非正式的)or sports clothes．But when they go out in the evening, they like to look nice．In good hotels and restaurants, men have to wear jackets and ties, and women have to wear pretty clothes．

　　It is difficult to say exactly(確切地)what people wear in Britain and the US, because everyone is different．If you are not sure what to wear, watch what other people do and then do the same．You’ll feel good if you don’t look too different from everyone else．

　　Once(從前)there was a boy in London．His name was Jimmy．He started painting when he was three years old, and when he was five years old, he was already very good at it．He painted many beautiful and interesting pictures, and a lot of people bought his pictures．They said, “This boy is going to be famous(著名的)when he’s a little older, and then we’re going to sell these pictures for a lot of money．”

　　Jimmy’s pictures were different from others’ because he never painted on the whole of the paper．He painted on half of it, and the other half was always empty(空的)．

　　In the 13th century, the famous Italian traveller, Marco Polo, travelled a long way to China．During his stay in China, he saw many wonderful things．One of the things he discovered was that the Chinese used paper money．In western countries, people did not use paper money until the 15th century．However, people in China began to use paper money in the 7th century．

　　A Chinese man called Cai Lun invented paper almost 2,000 years ago．He made it from wood．He took the wood from trees and made it into paper．He then put these pieces of paper together and made them into a book．

　　Now paper still comes from trees．We use a lot of paper every day．If we keep on wasting so much paper, there will not be any trees left on the earth．If there are no trees, there will be no paper．Every day, people throw away about 2,800 tons of paper in our city．It takes 17 trees to make one ton of paper．This means that we are cutting nearly 48,000 trees every day．Since it takes more than 10 years for a tree to grow, we must start using less paper now．If we don't, we will not have enough time to grow more trees to take the place of those we use for paper．

　　So how can we save paper?We can use both sides of every piece of paper, especially when we are making notes．We can choose drinks in bottles instead of those in paper bags．If the shop assistant gives us a paper bag, we can save it and reuse it later．

　　Everyone can help to save paper．If we all think carefully, we can help protect trees．But we should do it now, before it is too late．

　　In 1834, the clock tower in London was burned down．People planned to build a new clock which would be the biggest and best in the world．So the clock had to be big and keep very good time．The big clock was made in two years．Five more years later the tower was finished．Then people put the big clock in the tower, and made it ring out for the first time on July 11,1859．

　　In order to give the big clock a good name, people held a meeting．Someone wanted to call it the Queen of Bells, and someone thought Victoria was good．At last, a man named Benjaming Hall stood up．He was a big man．Before he started to speak, someone shouted, "Why not call it Big Ben?" Everybody laughed and agreed with him．

　　From then on, Big Ben became its name．And it also became a famous building of London．People all over the world wrote to Big Ben．They even sent birthday present-bottles of oil to help keep Big Ben running．Big Ben is not only a clock but also a dear friend of people．
