Be as Good as Your Words Japanese Prime Minister (首相) Junichiro Koizumi on April 22 apologized (道歉)
for his country's past in the wars. 
     "In the past, Japan did great damage (破壞) and brought suffering to the people of many countries, especially
those in Asia," he said.
     He was talking to 100 Asian and African leaders at a meeting in Jakarta, Indonesia.
     China and Japan are having a hard time these days. China is angry at Japan because Japan doesn't face its
past.
     For example, Japan started the war with Chian in the 1930s and 1940s. But one of its new history textbooks
says China started the war!
     Chinese Chairman Hu Jintao met Koizumi on April 23. Hu said China wanted to be friends with Japan. But he
 also told Koizumi that Japan needed to use history as a mirror (鏡子) and face the past.
     China and Japan are both important countries in the world .The two leaders agree a good friendship will be
good for both countries.
     The two countries sell a lot of goods to each other .Last year ,China overtook the US to become the biggest
trading partner (貿(mào)易伙伴) with Japan.
     Koizumi's apology is a good start. Now, it's important for Japan to match its words with action.

     New York State has passed the USA's first state law banning (禁止) motorists talking on cell phones.
The ban will begin on November l, although drivers caught using cell phones will be given only warnings
during the first month.
     First-time violators (違法者) will face a $100 fine. A second-time call for a $200 fine and every violation
after that will cost $500. At least a dozen localities have established (制定) bans, starting in 1999; and 40 states
have had bans proposed but not passed.
     At least 23 countries, including Great Britain, Italy, Israel and Japan, ban drivers from using cell phones.
     There are about 115 million cell phones in use in the United States and more than 6 million in New York
State.
     "To think that I'm not going to use the cell phone when at the same time I can still use my laptop (手提電腦), I can still read a paper, and I can still change my pants while driving at 65 mph. I think there's just
something wrong," an official said.
     Other critics (批評) noted other things like eating, drinking coffee and doing make-up while driving. They
suggested that the ban include a broader range of things.

     Last month, Jenna and Barbara Bush, the former (前任的) first daughters, wrote a letter to Malia and
