【題目】Knowing your neighbors can make you feel safer and can make your life a little more enjoyable. 1

Start a Facebook group. Many online groups already exist for local communities, but they may just focus on swapping and selling objects, or simply for exploring the local area. 2 For example, starting a Facebook group.

Get volunteering. Volunteering is a great way to meet like-minded neighbors and make a difference to your community. 3 Charities are the most obvious place to start. Charities, large or small, are always looking for help in regions across the UK. A simple Google search can help you discover local charities and volunteer opportunities.

Practice everyday kindness. Kindness is the start to possible long-lasting friendships. Everyday acts of kindness can be as simple as saying hello when you see your neighbors in the street or the supermarket. It may be seeing someone struggle with the gardening and offering your help. 4

Start an exercise group. There are a rare few of us that are motivated to start exercising, and even fewer that enjoy going it alone. 5 Plan big walks of your area and ask neighbors to come along. You could sign up together to attempt a marathon or half marathon. Or perhaps you can arrange a Zumba, yoga, or aerobics (有氧運(yùn)動(dòng)) class in the community centre.

A. However, you are often too busy to realize this.

B. There are many ways to volunteer in your local community.

C. Starting a neighborhood exercise group may be just the ticket.

As warming continues, scientists warn the oxygen content of oceans across the planet could be more and more reduced, with serious consequences for the future of fish and other sea life.

1 One is the simple fact that as water gets warmer, it can hold less dissolved (溶解的) oxygen. The other reason is less obvious. The entire ocean gets its oxygen from the surface either from the atmosphere, or from photosynthesizing algae floating at the top of the sea. 2

Global warming is expected to reduce the mixing of the ocean by making surface seawater lighter. That’s because in a warmer world we can expect more rainfall and more melting(融化) of glaciers, icebergs, and ice sheets. 3 The extra heat from the warming atmosphere will also make surface water expand and thus make it lighter still. 4 Instead, more of the oxygen will remain near the surface, where it will be used up by oxygen-breathing organisms.

A low-oxygen ocean may become an inescapable feature of our planet. A team of Danish researchers wondered how long oxygen levels would drop if we could somehow reduce our carbon dioxide emissions to zero by 2100. They determined that over the next few thousand years oxygen levels would continue to fall, until they declined by 30 percent. The oxygen would slowly return to the oceans, but even 100,000 years from now they will not have fully recovered. 5

A. It’s not known why the oxygen level of oceans has reduced.

B. Scientists point to two reasons to expect a drop in ocean oxygen.

C. Fresh water’s inpouring will make the water at the ocean’s surface lighter.

D. The oxygen then spreads to the deep ocean as the surface water slowly sinks.

E. Global warming has caused the reduction of the oxygen content of oceans worldwide.

F. The light surface water will be less likely to sink so the deep ocean will get less oxygen.

G. If they are right, we have every reason to worry about the major effect it has on sea life.

【題目】Mrs Mullen had just got a new heart. She’d waited a year for it, she told me— not that she was complaining. In fact, Mrs Mullen never complain about anything. She just got on with it. Although she was getting over a serious operation, she didn’t even like to bother the nurses for a painkiller. She put me, and most of my patients in the hospital, to shame.

My generation are a generation of complainers. We think the world owes us something. But if the world owes anyone anything, it owes people like Mrs Mullen. She left school at 14, even though she’d won a place at grammar school. She worked in a factory until she retired. She never had a day off sick in her life and never had a holiday — not even when she gave birth to her three children. That’s nearly 50 years of hard work. I’ve never worked as hard as Mrs Mullen, and I’ll almost certainly never have to.

Mrs Mullen recovered well and soon left hospital. It never occurred to me that I’d see her again, so I couldn’t believe my eyes when a few weeks later I went to buy a sandwich from the hospital Friends’ shop.

“What are you doing here?” I asked. “You’re supposed to be resting.”

“Oh I am,” she replied. “It’s only a few hours a week. I saw the ad for volunteers while I was staying here. It’s my way of saying thank you for all that this hospital has done for me.”

Thank you? Mrs Mullen is the sort of person who gives back more than she takes. I asked for a cheese and tomato sandwich. She handed me egg instead — it was all they had got. I hate egg, but I decided to eat it anyway and not to complain.

1Mrs Mullen made the author feel ashamed because ______.

A. he liked bothering others
