【題目】根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,選擇最佳答案。
Here is an astonishing and significant fact:Mental work alone can't make us tire. It sounds absurd. But a few years ago, scientists tried to find out how long the human brain could labor without reaching a stage of fatigue(疲勞). To the amazement of these scientists, they discovered that blood passing through the brain, when it is active, shows no fatigue at all!
If we took a drop of blood from a day laborer, we would find it full of fatigue toxins (霉素) and fatigue products. But if we took blood from the brain of an Albert Einstein, it would show no fatigue toxins at the end of the day.
So far as the brain is concerned, it can work as well and swiftly at the end of eight or even twelve hours of effort as at the beginning. The brain is totally tireless. So what makes us tired?
Some scientists declare that most of our fatigue comes from our mental and emotional (情緒的)attitudes. One of England's most outstanding scientists, J. A. Hadfield, says, “The greater part of the fatigue from which we suffer is of mental origin. In fact, fatigue of purely physical origin is rare. ”Dr. Brill, a famous American scientist, goes even further, He declares, “One hundred percent of the fatigue of sitting worker in good health is due to emotional problems.”
What kinds of emotions make sitting workers tired? Joy? Satisfaction? No! A feeling of being bored, anger, anxiety, tenseness, worry, a feeling of not being appreciated— those are the emotions that tire sitting workers. Hard work by itself seldom causes fatigue. We get tired because our emotions produce nervousness in the body.
(1)What surprised the scientists a few years ago?
A.Fatigue toxins could hardly be found in a laborer's blood
B.Albert Einstein didn't feel worn after a day's work
C.The brain could work for many hours without fatigue
D.A mental worker's blood was filled with fatigue toxins
(2)According to the author, which of the following can make sitting workers tired?
A.Challenging mental work
B.Unpleasant emotions
C.Endless tasks
D.Physical labor
(3)What's the author's attitude towards the scientists' idea?
A.He agrees with them
B.He doubts them
C.He argues against them
D.He hesitates to accept them

【答案】
(1)C
(2)B

【解析】本文介紹了科學(xué)家的新發(fā)現(xiàn):腦力勞動者感到疲憊是不良的情緒引起的身體緊張而導(dǎo)致的。
(1) 細(xì)節(jié)理解。根據(jù)第一段最后一句To the amazement of these scientists, they discovered that blood passing through the brain, when it is active, shows no fatigue at all! 可知讓科學(xué)家真正驚訝的事情是我們的大腦根本不會感覺到疲憊。故C正確。
(2)細(xì)節(jié)理解。根據(jù)最后一段前兩句What kinds of emotions make sitting workers tired? Joy? Satisfaction? No! A feeling of being bored, anger, anxiety, tenseness, worry,a feeling of not being appreciated—those are the emotions that tire sitting workers.可知然我們疲憊的是一些不良的情緒。四個選項中只有B項屬于這些不良的情緒。故B正確。
(3)推理判斷。作者在本文中敘述了我們的大腦不會因為工作而感到疲憊,讓我們疲憊的是我們的情緒情感。通篇中作者都持贊成支持的態(tài)度。故A正確。

【題目】任務(wù)型閱讀How to Improve Vocabulary Fast
Your vocabulary refers to the words in a language you are familiar with. We should learn some ways to expand it.
Read every day. Choose reading material that is slightly above your level and keep a dictionary with you to look up words you do not know.
If you do not meet with an unfamiliar word in your daily reading, use your dictionary to search for one.
Learn the correct definition and pronunciation for each new word. Pronunciation is as important as definition because in order to add a word to your active vocabulary, you must be able to use it in speech.
Elaborate(闡釋)on the meaning of the word. Use imagery and personal relevance. If you have just learned that the word “stubborn” , think about the neighbor who will not lend you his car.
Use your new word in speech and in writing. E-mail your sister about how your cat is stubborn about sleeping on your pillow. But the more you use it, the more fluent you will become in its use. Soon it will be a regular part of your active vocabulary.
Tell everyone you are trying to increase your vocabulary. Encourage them to ask you what your latest word is .The more you explain the meaning of a word to someone, the more likely you are to remember it.
A. Or let them ask for the definition of a new word you have used.
B. Your vocabulary contains the words you understand.
C. The vocabulary can be increased.
D. Imagine him shaking his head, and think of him as “stubborn in his refusal”.
E. The first time you use a new word in speech it may seem strange.
F. Find a new word every day.

【題目】讀后續(xù)寫
閱讀下面短文,根據(jù)所給情節(jié)進(jìn)行續(xù)寫,使之構(gòu)成一個完整的故事。
One day, my brother and I were alone in our apartment. The reason was that my parents had both gone for a ball party and had left me in charge of everything. I was doing my homework while my younger brother was watching television. Suddenly, the doorbell rang. Ding-Dong! Ding-Dong! My younger brother had rushed to the door before I decided to answer the door. We both thought that our parents had come home. As a result, he unlocked the door and opened it.
Outside of the house stood a man who wore a black raincoat and black rubber boots. He looked no different from other people and he said that he was a salesman and asked politely if our mother or father was at home so he could talk with them.
Without any thinking, my brother said, “No.” He asked if we would like to buy some comic books, which he was selling. I quickly explained to him that we were not supposed to buy anything without our parents' permission. However, it seemed that he was not willing to follow my advice and he had an intention to enter our house.
Then I realized something terrible would happen. As I was about to close the door, he forced his way into our house. He took out a knife and forced me to tie up my brother's hands with some rope which he took out from his pocket. I tied up his hands but I tied in a special way so my brother could untie himself as we often did. The man then tied my hands up and locked both of us in the kitchen.
Soon he went upstairs to search the bedroom for something valuable. I managed to teach my brother to untie the rope on his hands. He then untied me. I rushed to the telephone to call the police, but the line was dead.

【題目】閱讀理解
In 1978, I was 18 and was working as a nurse in a small town about 270 km away from Sydney, Australia. I was looking forward to having five days off from duty. Unfortunately, the only one train a day back to my home in Sydney had already left. So I thought I'd hitch a ride (搭便車).
I waited by the side of the highway for three hours but no one stopped for me. Finally, a man walked over and introduced himself as Gordon. He said that although he couldn't give me a lift, I should come back to his house for lunch. He noticed me standing for hours in the November heat and thought I must be hungry. I was doubtful as a young girl but he assured (使…放心)me I was safe, and he also offered to help me find a lift home afterwards. When we arrived at his house, he made us sandwiches. After lunch, he helped me find a lift home.
Twenty-five years later, in 2003, while I was driving to a nearby town one day, I saw an elderly man standing in the glaring heat, trying to hitch a ride. I thought it was another chance to repay someone for the favour I'd been given decades earlier. I pulled over and picked him up. I made him comfortable on the back seat and offered him some water.
After a few moments of small talk, the man said to me, “You haven't changed a bit, even your red hair is still the same.”
I couldn't remember where I'd met him. He then told me he was the man who had given me lunch and helped me find a lift all those years ago. It was Gordon.

(4)What does the author want to tell the readers through the story?
