This is the VOA Special English Education Report. A few weeks ago, we talked about the Test of English as a Foreign Language, or TOEFL. A listener in Cambodia named Thida asks if American colleges and universities also accept the IELTS exam. IELTS is the International English Language Testing System. It was developed by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations.

Cambridge ESOL says the test measures true－to－life ability to communicate in English for education, immigration or employment. The IELTS tests listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. It uses a mixture of accents and spellings, including British English and American English.

The test is used by government agencies, schools and professional organizations in one hundred twenty countries. __1__ Many American schools that accept the IELTS can be found on the Web at ielts.org.

__2__ But the graduate school at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, for example, says it prefers the IELTS.

The listening and speaking parts are the same for everyone who takes the IELTS. But people have a choice of reading and writing tests—either academic or general training. The listening test takes thirty minutes. __3__

The reading test takes sixty minutes. Students answer forty questions based on three written passages.

The writing test also takes sixty minutes. Students have to write two essays. One essay has to be at least one hundred fifty words long and the other at least two hundred fifty words. __4__ The longer one has to support an argument.

__5__ The score is based on a recorded talk between the student and a test examiner.

　　It was because of this program that many computer manufacturers launched sleep mode and millions of computer users around the world began to adopt this policy to help save energy when they were not using their computers．The term “green computing” began to be used around the same time as well, and began to become a goal that more companies strive to meet over the years．There are several government agencies that have continued to help strive for better standards for computers and companies to help promote green promoting．Energy Star was actually revised in October of 2006 to make the requirements stricter for computers，and also implemented a ranking system for products．Because of these new requirements, there are over 20 states that have now established a special recycling program for old computers and electronics to help with green computing．

　　Many of today’s IT systems are beginning to rely on both people and hardware to help push their computer systems toward a more green computing system to help both the company and others．This is a hard balance to achieve, as it has to satisfy users, management, and regulatory compliance(順從)．Even the disposal of computer waste is all managed so that everyone in the circle is happy with the outcome．Many companies are learning the best ways that they call go greener when it comes to their computing and also help their business in the process．While many home computer users may not be quite as familiar with green computing as large firms, this term is starting to become more mainstream all around the world and the requirements for new, better computers to help both the companies and the end users of the equipment, as well as our environment, are becoming more and more urgent．

Happiness is U-shaped, for we are happier at the start and end of our lives but hit a slump when we are middle-aged, British and US researchers say.

Economists from the University of Warwick, central England, and from Dartmouth College, New Hampshire, looked at data on the mental health of two million people from 80 countries.

In Britain, the probability of depression for men and women peaks at around 44 years of age, Warwick University said in a press release.

In the United States, though, there was a big difference between men and women.

Among women, unhappiness peaked at around the age of 40, whereas among men, it was about 50.

But the U-shape of happiness is constant around the world, and mid-life depression takes place  regardless of marital status, changes in job or income.

The study appears in Social Science & Medicine, published by the Dutch publishing house Elsevier.

"It happens to men and women ,to single and married people, to rich and poor and to those with and without children." said co-author Andrew Oswald.

One possibility may be that people realize they  won't achieve many of their aspirations at middle age, the researchers said.

Another reason could be that after seeing their fellow middle-aged peers begin to die, people begin to value their own remaining years and embrace life once more.

But the good news is that if people make it to aged 70 and are still physically fit, they are on average as happy and mentally healthy as a 20-year old.

"For the average persons in the modern world, the dip in mental health and happiness comes on slowly, not suddenly in a single year," Oswald said. "Only in their fifties do people emerge from this low period,"
