(廣東省汕頭市蘇北中學(xué)2010屆高第四次月考C篇)

Have you ever heard the story of the four-minute mile? Many years ago, people believed that it was impossible for a human being to run a mile in less than four minutes until Roger Banister proved it wrong in1954.

What happens if you put an animal in a pond? Any animal, big or small, will swim its way through. What happens when someone, who does not know how to swim, falls in deep waters? They drown. If an animal who has not learned swimming could escape by swimming, why not you? Because you believe you will drown while the animal does not.

Have you ever wondered why the letters are organized in a particular order on hour keyboard? You might have thought it is to increase the typing speed. Most people never question it. But the fact is that this system was developed to reduce the typing speed at a time when typewriter parts would jam if the operator typed too fast.

These three cases show the power of our beliefs. There is no other more powerful directing force in human behavior than belief. Your beliefs have the power to create and to destroy. A belief delivers a direct command to your nervous system.

I used a snake in my workshops for children to show them how unrealistic some of their beliefs are. Students of a school in India, said snakes were slippery, slimy (黏糊糊的) and poisonous. After doing an exercise for changing beliefs, they handled my snake and found it to be dry and clean. They also remembered that only three types of poisonous snakes exist in India.

Did this story end the way you thought? Review your beliefs now and find out which ones you need to change.

 A. snakes in India aren’t poisonous       B. snakes can be caught easily

Stop  Spam

When I first got an e-mail account ten years ago, I received communications only from family, friends, and colleagues. Now it seems that every time I check my e-mail, I have an endless series of advertisements and other correspondence that do not interest me at all. If we want e-mail to continue to be useful, we need specific laws that make spamming(發(fā)送垃圾郵件) a crime.

If lawmakers do not do something soon to prohibit spam, the problem will certainly get much worse. Computer programs allow spammers to send hundreds of millions of e-mails almost instantly. As more and more advertisers turn to spam to sell their products, individual(個人的) e-mail boxes are often flooded with spam e-mails. Would people continue to use e-mail if they had to deal with an annoying amount of spam each time?

This problem is troubling for individuals and companies as well. Many spam e-mails contain computer viruses that can shut down the entire network of a company. Companies rely on e-mail for their employees to communicate with each other. Spam frequently causes failures in their local communications networks, and their employees are thus unable to communicate effectively. Such a situation results in a loss of productivity and requires companies to repeatedly repair their networks. These computer problems raise production costs of companies, which are, in the end, passes on to the consumer.

For these reasons, I believe that lawmakers need to legislate (立法) against spam. Spammers should be fined, and perhaps sent to prison if they continue to disturb people. E-mail is a tool which helps people all over the world to communicate conveniently, but spam is destroying this convenience.

  A. Companies rely on e-mail for communications.

B. More people in the world communicate by e-mail.

C. Many computer viruses contain spam e-mail.

D. More advertisers begin to promote sales through spam.

59. According to Paragraph 3, who is the final victim of spam?

 A. The business                 B. The advertiser

 C. The employee                D. The consumer

60. What is the purpose of the text?

The flag, the most common symbol(象征)of a nation in the modern world, is also one of the most ancient. With a clear symbolic meaning. the flag in the traditional form is still used today to mark buildings, ships and other vehicles related to a country.

The national flag as we know it today is in no way a primitive(原始的)artifact. It is , rather, the product of thousands of years’ development. Historians believe that it had two major ancestors, of which the earlier served to show wind direction.

Early human beings used very fragile houses and boats. Often strong winds would tear roofs from houses or cause high waves that endangered travelers. People’s food supplies were similarly vulnerable. Even after they had learned how to plant grains, they still needed help from nature to ensure good harvests. Therefore they feared and depended on the power of the wind, which could bring warmth from one direction and cold from another.

Using a simple piece of cloth tied to the top of a post to tell the direction of the wind was more dependable than earlier methods, such as watching the rising of smoke from a fire. The connection of the flag with heavenly power was  therefore reasonable. Early human societies began to fix long pieces of cloth to the tops of totems(圖騰) before carrying them into battle. They believed that the power of the wind would be added to the good wishes of the gods and ancestors represented by the totems themselves.

These flags developed very slowly into modern flags. The first known flag of a nation or a ruler was unmarked: The king of China around 1000 B.C. was known to have a white flag carried ahead of him. This practice might have been learned from Egyptians even further in the past, but it was from China that it spread over trade routs through India, then across Arab lands, and finally to Europe, where it met up with the other ancestor of the national flag.

 (山東省聊城市2008年高三年級模擬(四)D篇)

Some critics of American society say that dishonesty is rampant (猖獗) in the Federal Government. One example they city took place during March and April, 1980. For a whole month, they say, the United States lied to its allies (同盟國).

Cyrus Vance, who was then Secretary of State, was given the task of telling Great Britain, Japan, France, Germany and others that the United States would not take military action against Iran as long as we had the cooperation of our allies. Secretary of State Vance knew that the sudden attack to get out the American captives was already planned while he was talking to our allies. But he also knew that the reason for this deliberate lying was to save lives. The primary purpose of the deception(欺騙) was not to trick our allies but to mislead the Iranian kidnappers(綁架者) so that a rescue attempt could take place.

Many students of ethics believe that lying for the sake of one’s country is justifiedin certain cases. In this case, having lied for the sake of his country, Secretary Vance secretly wrote a letter of resignation before the attack took place. By submitting(提交) his resignation before the attack, he showed that the result had nothing to do with his resignation. It can be said that former Secretary of State Vance deceived other governments only for humanitarian reasons. Then, once he had lied, he resigned.

In that case, it is argued, lying may be justified. Without the deception, the rescue mission could not have taken place. Of course, dishonesty in government—at local, state and national levels—does not always have such noble reasons. A prime example is the so called Watergate Affair.

Most Americans were surprised and outraged by the news of Watergate Affair. But many Europeans were surprised at our surprise. Some European observers explained that they tend to think of lying;cheating, deception and corruption(腐敗) as part of politics and government.

71. Secretary of State, Cyrus Vance lied, to the allies__________.

A. to mislead Iranian government B. on the purpose of saving lives

C. for the sake of his own benefit D. in order to get their cooperation

72. From the passage we learn that the United States ___________.

A. tricked their allies into attacking Iran

B. took military action to capture Iranian kidnappers

C. undertook a rescue mission with the help of their allies

D. carried out an attack to rescue some Americans from the Iranian kidnappers

73. According to the passage, many students regard Vance’s lying as________.

A. a reason for his resignation B. reasonable and acceptable

C. unbelievable and unreasonable D. an indication of his dishonesty

74. The author, like most Americans, regards the Watergate Affair as___________.

A. uncommon in politics and government B. part of politics and government

C. justified dishonesty in government D. a lie with noble reason

75. What is the best title of the passage?

A. The US government – a responsible government.

B. Cooperation means military success.

C. Should all dishonesty be criticized?

D. Lying, a normal phenomenon in Europe.

【2011·四川成都4月月考】

A

A week ago, I had the great pleasure of reading an e-book, When Money Talks, Listen! By Rich Ezzo. It took only about an hour to read.

When I first received a copy, I thought it was a Get Rich Quick type of publication. Nothing is wrong with Get Rich Quick, but my mind just doesn’t chase after dreams of wealth. I think that if God ever wants me to be rich, he knows where to find my purse.

When I began reading When Money Talks, Listen!, I was overjoyed to find that Rich Ezzo isn’t money hungry either. He, too, is hungry far more important than money.

Since I love this e-book so much, why wait a week to write the review? Simple. I wanted to see if the effect it had on me was a keeper. After reading the last word of the e-book, I totally agreed with the subtitle which promised to forever change the way we thought about money. I had so many thoughts running around my mind that I had to install(安裝) a stoplight to stop some while others made their way into the picture, then I yielded(讓路) them as a few ones arrived in town. I had a mental traffic jam, which only goes to show how slow the traffic usually is

It has been a week and the effect is the same. I truly do look at money differently and have even done a few things differently this week. This is an e-book you’ll want to read, I promise. I often recommend books to my daughter, and this is one that I didn’t just “suggest”---I left it open at the bottom of the computer and told each one, “Read it, you’ll love it.”

I would never point someone in a direction I wouldn’t go myself. I urge you to visit the author’s website, Myster Money, and to download the e-book. You won’t regret it.

LOS ANGELES—The last of the “Star Wars” movies has done what no movie in history has ever done—sold $50 million worth of tickets in a single day.

“Star Wars: Episode III—Revenge of the Sith” made 50,013,859 from showings at 3,661 theaters and more than 9,000 screens around the country on Thursday, including special midnight shows. That beat the one-day record set by “Shrek 2”, which sold $44.8 million on a single Saturday—its fourth day in theaters.

“It’s surprising.” said Bruce Snyder, president of domestic distribution at Twentieth Century Fox. “It’s probably 20 percent more than I thought we could do.”

The George Lucas film, which features the changing of Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker into the evil Darth Vader, also beat the opening day record held by “Spider-Man 2”, which made $40.4 million when it opened on a Wednesday last June.

“Fifty million is a good opening weekend, especially a single day,” said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Exhibitor Relations. “This is the movie world’s 100-year flood.”

The news comes as a relief to Hollywood, which has seen a box office slump for 12 straight weeks. Theater owners, studios and marketing partners had their hopes on “Star Wars” to start the summer movie season and they weren’t disappointed.

The film was shown on 2,900 screens at midnight Thursday. What they made from that one showing alone was $16.5 million, which beat the previous record of $8 million set by “The Lord of the Rings: the Return of the King”. It is almost certain “Star Wars” will push past the $100 million mark for its opening weekend. The record for a three-day weekend is held by the first “Spider-Man”, which made $114.8 million.

60. How many films are mentioned in the passage?

A. Three.       B. Four.        C. Five       D. Six.

61. Which is NOT mentioned in the passage?

Although women lead healthier, longer lives, the cruel perception that they reach their sell-by date and become “old” sooner than men is widespread in the workplace, research shows.

A survey of more than 2,600 managers and personnel professionals showed that age discrimination is not only common in the workplace, but is full of inconsistencies(矛盾). Six in ten managers thought that they had suffered from age discrimination——usually because they were turned down for a job for being too old or too young. Yet more than a fifth admitted that they used age as a condition when they employ new workers.

Although the survey found widespread agreement that older workers were better than younger colleagues when it came to reliability, commitment, loyalty and customer service, these qualities were not necessarily considered to be worthy of advancement. More than half of respondents believed that workers between 30 and 39 were the most likely to be advanced in their company, with only 2 per cent citing (引證)50-year-olds or above.

Dianah Worman of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development said that there was anecdotal evidence that people were considered old at different ages in different sectors. “We heard of one man working in IT who said he was considered too old by the age of 28,”she said. “There was no evidence to suggest that older workers were less valuable to companies than younger workers, in fact the opposite was often true because older workers often brought experience. ” she added.

The findings also suggested that the Government’s ideas on age in the workforce may also be out of step with reality.

68. The text is mainly about ______.

A. the government’s idea on age in workforce

B. age discrimination in the workforce

C. the people who find work

D. the discussion about who is worth promoting

69. Which of the following statements is true according to the text?

A. Women get older than men though they are healthier.

B. Sixty percent of the managers were refused because they were too older.

C. Young workers are more valuable to companies than the older ones.

D. The people in their thirties are easier to be promoted than those in their fifties.

70. The underlined word “sell-by date” in paragraph 1 probably refers to______.

B. the age when they should be promoted

C. the date on which they’re sold

D. the date when they sell goods

Imagine a world 400 years ago where children were used as chimney sweeps. The pay was low, it was a dirty trade and there was little reward for the men who did the job and even less for children.

Medway’s annual Sweeps Festival recreates the joy and laughter enjoyed by the chimney sweeps at their traditional holiday: the one time of the year the sweeps could leave the soot(煙灰) behind and have some fun. The sweeps’ holiday was traditionally held on 1 May each year. Locally, they used to mark the occasion by staging a procession through the streets of Rochester.

Their fun continued with the Jack-in-the-Green ceremony, a seven-foot character that they used to waken at dawn on Blue Bell Hill, Chatham. The Jack-in-the-Green would walk with the chimney sweeps in their parade. When the Climbing Boys’ Act 1868 made it illegal to employ young boys to carry out the trade, the traditional procession gradually began to fade. The final May celebration was held in the early 1900s.

The modern day Rochester Sweeps Festival is a colorful mix of music, dancing and entertainment with more than 60 Morris sides and entertainers celebrating throughout the three-day festival. The festival was revived in 1981 by local businessman Gordon Newton, a keen historian. He decided it was time to bring it back and over the years he has helped develop the festival into what it is today — an excellent performance of traditional Britain.

Gordon researched the Sweeps’ tradition and organized a small parade, involving local Morris teams. In time, Medway Council took over organization of the festival but Gordon remained actively involved. Today he is festival producer and plays melodeon(簧風(fēng)琴) for several Morris teams. Doug Hudson is the festival’s music director, a role he has held for many years.
