If it looks like a fish and swims like a fish, it usually is a fish. But not the new, lifelike robot fish developed by UK scientists, which have been swimming around the London Aquarium(水族館) as they wait for their release off northern Spain in 2011.

Equipped with tiny chemical sensors(傳感器),the fish will collect data on pollution in the port of Gijón and wirelessly send the information back to the control center.

“It’s a little lab onboard the fish,” said Rory Doyle, a scientist at BMT Group. The robots were designed, and are being built, by professor Huosheng Hu and his team at the University of Essex, UK.

The sensors will search for dangers such as chemical waste and will allow officials to map in real time the sources and effects of pollution, Doyle said. w_w w. k#s5_u.c o*m

He and his colleagues chose a fish design because hundreds of millions of years of evolution(進(jìn)化) has created an energy-efficient creature, he said. “Nature has done it very, very well.” But copying such a successful design comes at a cost: nearly 29,000 u.s. dollars per robot. m

The fish, therefore, will be built “robust” enough to handle any possibilities, Doyle said. They can’t get caught in nets easily, for instance, and the tracking systems inside can help the robot fish avoid crashes with boats and other things in the way.

So far, it also seems unlikely the robot fish will be mistaken: At the London Aquarium, sharks swim away from the fake fish, possibly because they find the robots electromagnetic fields(電磁場(chǎng)) unpleasant, Doyle said. w_w w. k#s5_u.c o*m

At the same time, scientists are working to ensure that the sounds of the robots and other factors don’t disturb the natural environment, he added.

The robot fish was developed in order to_______. w. k#s5_u.c o*m

A.be displayed on a robot exhibition in Spain

B.be sent to London Aquarium as a gift

C.get information of ocean pollution

D.collect data on the fishes in deep sea

According to Doyle, the robot was designed into fish shape in order to_______.

A.cut the cost of the robot

B.make the robot beautiful

C.reduce the sounds of the robot

D.make the robot work better with less energy

We can infer from the passage that the robot fish______. k#s5_u.c o*m

A.would send pictures of sea life back

B.would not be looked on as a real fish by fishes

C.could swim much faster than fishes like sharks

D.could help find new forms of energy in the sea

The underlined word “robust” in Paragraph 6 probably means_____.

A.small and light    B.big and heavy

C.smooth and soft    D.strong and smart

Although cats may be one of the most popular pets today, little is known about how and when humans and cats set up their close relationship.

The earliest evidence for human–cat interaction dates back to prehistoric Cyprus(史前塞浦路斯), where the remains of a wild cat and a human — dated 9,500 years old — were found buried together.

A new study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences has confirmed the first direct evidence of a human–domestic cat relationship among Chinese farmers 5,300 years ago. Researchers studied the bones of cats, dogs, deer and other animals unearthed in an excavation (挖掘) near a village in Central China. By using some ways, scientists showed that the cats were living on a mostly millet()–based diet, just like the domesticated dogs and pigs from the site.

"The most reasonable explanation for a high consumption of millet–based food is that the cats had formed a stable and mutual relationship with humans and could easily feed on rodents (嚙齒動(dòng)物) around human villages, find leftover food or even have been fed by people intentionally," said Hu Yaowu from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, whose research focuses on the relationship between humans and domesticated animals.

"It is very interesting for us to find the consumption of millet-based foods by the cats, since this kind of evidence had long been missing.” Hu explains. Since cats usually eat meat, such a diet would be unexpected, unless the cats were being fed by people, the study argues. The researchers also found that one of the cats survived to reach old age, implying that it had a safe place to live and enough to eat.

Why the farmers wanted to keep cats nearby or make them "pets" could be answered by other evidence. Chinese archaeologists found some storage containers were specifically designed to keep out rodents — a vermin (害獸) that cats could certainly have helped with.

The simplified theory is that rats were attracted to the food of farmers, and so were harmful to farmers. Cats were attracted to the rats, and so farmers formed a mutually beneficial relationship with cats, taking care of them in return for pest control.

1.The evidence found in the remains dating back to prehistoric Cyprus means ??????? .

A. human made cats pets as early as 9,500 years ago

B. human interacted with cats very early

C. cats didn’t appear until prehistoric Cyprus

D. when cats became domesticated

2.Apart from cats, Hu Yaowu and his teams may also study ??????? .

A. the preventions of pests from grains

B. the history of Chinese farming

D. the ways to keep pets

3.Which of the following is NOT the evidence of Chinese farms’ keeping cats?

A. Cats didn’t feed on meat.

B. The cats consumed large amounts of millet–based foods.

C. One of the cats survived to reach old age.

D. Some storage containers were specifically designed to keep out rodents.

4.What are the reasons for farmers to keep cats?

A. Helping keep other domesticated animals.

B. Not letting cats eat food.

C. Supplying meat for human.

D. Helping reduce the amount of pests.

5.In which part of a newspaper would be the passage most probably appear? ??????? .

The $586 billion economic stimulus(刺激)package that China announced on Sunday may not be quite as large as it seemed at first sight, but it shows just how seriously the authorities in Beijing take the threat of a slowdown following the international financial crisis. On the face of it, the package of tax cuts, higher public spending, and easier credit makes up the largest such stimulus in history.

The new policy gives President Hu Jintao something to show fellow world leaders at the Group of 20 summit in Washington on Saturday as they seek ways out of the financial crisis.

“We must carry out the measures to ensure fast and stable economic development ,” Premier Wen Jiabao told government leaders on Monday. “They are not only for the needs of our own development but also our biggest contribution to the world.”

At first, stock markets(股市) jumped on news of the package, in the hope that if China’s economy continues to grow, it might help other nations go through the expected global decline in economy by offering a market for their exports.

The stimulus package is designed to reduce the effects of falling exports  on China’s own economy, encouraging investment (投資)and consumption (消費(fèi))at home. That, the government says, should keep the world’s fastest-growing economy on a “steady and relatively fast” growth track despite the depressing international climate.

The State Council(國(guó)務(wù)院),China’s cabinet, said it would target spending over the next two years on low-income housing, rural construction, water and electricity supplies, technological innovation(創(chuàng)新),and recovery from disasters such as the May 12 earthquake. If the plan is carried out, its focus on projects benefiting China’s poorer citizens, rather than on traditional large-scale industrial development, will strengthen the government’s policy of building a “harmonious society” that bridges the present gap between the rich and the poor.

72. China’s economic stimulus package  ______ .

A. shows its serious attitude towards the international financial crisis

B. has stimulated the world’s economy greatly

C. mainly focuses on higher public spending

D. is as large as it seemed at first sight

73. According to Wen jiabao, China’s measures will ______.

A. make the world’s economy grow faster

B. ensure fast economic and cultural development in China

C. be only needed for China’s own development

D. be its biggest contribution to the world

74. How can the new policy reduce the effects of falling exports on China’s own economy? ______

A. By keeping China’s economy one of the world’s fastest growing ones.

B. By making China’s economy the fastest growing one in the world.

C. By encouraging investment and consumption at home.

D. By getting rid of the depressing international climate.

75. What’s the final aim of the new policy? ______

A. To build traditional large-scale industries.

B. To reconstruct the earthquake-hit area.

C. To build a harmonious society throughout China.

D. To provide housing for low-income people.

.

US President Barack Obama made his first visit to China early this week, during which he sent out signals to China that the US sees China as its partner, not a rival.

During his Asian tour, Obama emphasized that the US isn't  looking to contain the rise of a strong, prosperous China.

“China-US relations are very important. Maintaining such ties  is the responsibility of both sides,” President Hu jintao told reporters after his meeting with Obama. Hu described the meeting as candid(坦誠(chéng)的), constructive and fruitful, a “very good” talk.

The two leaders agreed that the key to China-US relations was  to respect each other's interests and major concerns, but that  national differences were normal.

A joint statement released after the meeting said it covered major issues, from nuclear proliferation to global warming to  financial crisis and trade protectionism. “China-US relations go beyond any single issue,” said Obama.

China holds a large amount of US government debt – over $800  billion (5.5 trillion yuan) in Treasury bonds. Just before  Obama's China visit, The New York Times described it as a trip  to “pay his respects to his banker”.

The US is the China's biggest export market, accounting for more  than 70 percent of China's exports. Total trade between the  two was worth $400 billion (2.7 trillion yuan), in 2008.

In addition to the financial interdependence, there are  educational exchanges to be considered. More than 11,000  Americans studied in China last year, for a 25 percent    increase over the previous year, according to the Institute of  International Education in the US. Meanwhile, Chinese students are the second largest group of  foreign students in the US, and their numbers are on the rise. Last year, 81,000 mainland students went to the US, a 20 percent increase from 2008. According to the joint statement issued on Tuesday, for the next four years, over 100,000 American students will be sent to the China for study.

Still, people in the two countries may have a long way to go in improving their opinions.

49.What’s the text mainly about?

A The significance of Obama’s visit to China

B The effects of Obama on China –US relations.

C How the two leaders solve the political and financial problems between each other.

D The educational exchanges between the two countries.

50. What does the underlined sentence in the second paragraph mean?

A The US is looking forward to becoming as prosperous as China.

B Obama believes China is the most prosperous country in Asia.

C Obama’s government sees China as its partner, not a rival.

D Obama  emphasized China would be more prosperous than the US in the future.

51.How many major issues did the meeting cover according to a joint statement?

A Three  B  Four  C  Five  D Six

52. We can infer from the text_____________

A China is the largest debtor of US government in terms of treasury bonds

B Obama  expressed his strong wish to visit China again

C Chinese students are the largest group of foreign students in America since 2008

D Although the two countries have made progress in cooperation ,national differences still exist.
