【題目】When Seattle-based poet Heather McHugh won $500,000 from the Mac Arthur Foundation, she didn’t buy a Maserati or fly to Paris. Instead, she put the money in the bank and continued teaching college courses and writing poetry. It wasn’t until about two years later, in 2011, that she finally figured out what to do with it.

She discovered there are millions of caregivers in the United States taking care of the chronically(長期地)ill or disabled. “It’s a heartbreaking contract of love,” she says. So in 2012, Heather formed Caregifted, a non-profit organization that offers a seven-day, all-expenses-paid vacation to Vancouver Island to people who have been caregivers for at least ten years.”It’s hard physical, psychological, and emotional work. “It’s clear they deserve and need a respite,” she says.

Tricia Eisner, a single mother of 19-year-old triplet(三胞胎中的一個)boys, two of them with severe illness, was one of the first caregivers to go on vacation, in 2013. When Tricia got a phone call saying Caregifted wanted to send her to Eastport,Maine, she “couldn’t believe” someone would pay for her to go on a vacation; disbelief gave way to concern about her sons. But after two days away, the worry was gone. n After being in Maine by myself, with nobody to take care of or think about except myself, I realized that rock was gone," says Tricia. She was afraid the heaviness would return when the week was over, but to her surprise, it hasn’t been back since.

Heather says, “Everybody needs restorative time. For some, it’s life-extending.” Tricia and the other guests aren’t the only ones to benefit from Caregifted ; Heather has too. “I thought I was the queen of love, being a poet, ” Heather says. “But I didn’t know a thing about love until I met these people.”

【題目】根據(jù)短文理解,選擇正確答案。
Retirement (退休) should be time of joy and freedom. However, for some people retirement comes with feelings of depression (沮喪), which makes life difficult for them.
Retirement is a major life change. Even good changes usually involve some kinds of loss. When you retire, you find yourself lacking whatever working used to provide. That could include, for example, 1. knowing you're working for society, 2. getting admiration from your skills, 3. having “aha” moments when you solve problems, 4. having people to socialize with, and 5. simply having a place to go and a reason to get out of bed every day. For most people, there's a financial loss, too. Also, retirement age is a time when a lot of people have to deal with losing their parents or having serious health problems of their own.
Because of all these, retirees are more likely to get depressed.
Depression is very harmful. First, depression can make physical health problems worse. Second, it takes a toll on relationships, because it can make people angry. Third, it's hard to get much done when you're depressed.
What can we do to overcome (克服) the feelings of depression? First, do all the things that help depression in general: drink enough water, exercise, talk to friends, have a hobby, laugh, and spend time in nature. If you feel depressed more often than not, it's probably time to talk to a doctor about your feelings. Second, it's important to keep busy and get out of the house when you can. Make specific plans with friends. Take a class Volunteer. Or just make sure you start each day with some kind of goal. Third, try to focus on what you've gained by retiring. Think about what you may have now that you wished you had before you were able to retire. For example, days that are less stressful, a chance to rest and take better care of your body, more time for your family and yourself. To write, to start a hobby and to learn something new are all new possibilities. Finally, tell your story. You've lived a long time and you become an oral historian each time you talk with someone about your experiences. You can also write in a journal or make a video recording of your memories. Telling your stories can help you look back on your life and career with a sense of wholeness and achievements.
(1)People may find life very hard after they retire because of ___________.
A.freedom
B.nervousness
C.discouragement (losing heart)
D.hard work
(2)All the following can cause the retirees' unpleasant feelings EXCEPT _______________.
A.they will suffer from financial loss
B.they have to support their parents
C.they may lose the reason to get up early
D.they may have fewer people to socialize with
(3)The underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 means ________________.
A.it makes people's relationships unusual
B.it makes people's relationships in peace

【題目】There is no sound worse than an alarm clock first thing in the morning. Some of us are the type to jolt out of bed with a smile.1 While I have a love-hate relationship with mornings,I have found that there are indeed ways to make mornings a little more bearable.

Mentally plan out your day.

One way to combat the morning blues is to mentally plan out your day right when you wake up to prepare yourself for the day.Give yourself at least one little thing to look forward to each day.2

Meditate.

Meditation (冥想) will clear your mind and relax your body.Even just ten minutes of focused mental thought can completely clear your mind.3 Of all of them,I like Headspace best, which provides 10-minute sessions that leave you feeling relaxed, and ready to have a great day!4

People say “l(fā)ook good, feel good.” If you have your outfit ready in advance, you are more likely to feel confident and mentally prepared for the day.Whether it’s a pair of jeans or a sweater, pick out clothes that you feel great in.

【題目】根據(jù)短文理解,選擇正確答案。
People aren't walking any more---if they can figure out a way to avoid it.
I felt superior(不為……所動) about this matter until the other day I took my car to mail a small parcel. The journey is a matter of 281 steps. But I used the car. And I wasn't in any hurry, either. I had merely become one more victim of a national sickness: motorosis.
It is an illness to which I had thought myself immune(免疫的), for I was brought up in the tradition of going to places on my own two legs. At that time, we regarded 25 miles as good day's walk and the ability to cover such a distance in ten hours as sign of strength and skill. It did not occur to us that walking was a hardship. And the effect was lasting. When I was 45 years old I raced -–and beat-—a teenage football player the 168 steps up the Stature of Liberty.
Such enterprises today are regarded by many middle-aged persons as bad for the heart. But a well-known British physician, Sir Adolphe Abrahams, pointed out recently that hearts and bodies need proper exercise. A person who avoids exercise is more likely to have illnesses than one who exercises regularly. And walking is an ideal form of exercise--- the most familiar and natural of all.
It was Henry Thoreau who showed mankind the richness of going on foot. The man walking can learn the trees, flower, insects, birds and animals, the significance of seasons, the very feel of himself as a living creature in a living world. He cannot learn in a car.
The car is a convenient means of transport, but we have made it our way of life. Many people don't dare to approach nature any more; to them the world they were born to enjoy is all threat. To them security is a steel river thundering on a concrete road. And much of their thinking takes place while waiting for the traffic light to turn green.
I say that the green of forests is the mind's best light. And none but the man on foot can evaluate what is basic and everlasting.
(1)What is the national sickness?
A.Walking too much
B.Traveling too much
C.Driving cars too much
D.Climbing stairs too much.
(2)What was life like when the author was young?
A.People usually went around on foot.
B.people often walked 25 miles a day
C.People used to climb the Statue of Liberty.
D.people considered a ten-hour walk as a hardship.
(3)The author mentions Henry Thoreau to prove that______.
A.middle-aged people like getting back to nature
B.walking in nature helps enrich one's mind
C.people need regular exercise to keep fit
D.going on foot prevents heart disease
(4)What is the author's intention of writing this passage?
A.To tell people to reflect(思考) more on life.
B.To recommend people to give up driving
C.To advise people to do outdoor activities
D.To encourage people to return to walking
