The United States government wants to know what the public thinks about its findings on the safety of cloned animals.

The Food and Drug Administration says meat and milk from clones of adult cattle, pigs and goats are safe to eat. An F. D. A. official called them "as safe to eat as the food we eat every day. " And when those clones reproduce sexually, the agency says, their offspring (后代) are safe to eat as well. But research on cloned sheep is limited. So the F. D. A. proposes that sheep clones not be used for human food.

The United States this year could become the first country to approve the sale of foods from cloned animals. First, however, the public will have ninety days to comment on three proposed documents. On December 28th the F. D. A. released a long report, called a draft risk assess?ment, along with two policy documents.

The agency says it must receive comments by April second. The F. D. A. seemed ready to act several years ago,but an advisory committee called for more research.

For now,the government will continue to ask producers to honor a request that they not sell foods from cloned animals.

Clones are still rare. They cost a lot and are difficult to produce.

The F. D. A. says most food from cloning is expected to come not from clones themselves, but from their sexually reproduced offspring. It says clones are expected to be used mostly as breeding animals to spread good qualities.

Public opinion studies show most Americans do not like the idea of food from cloned ani?mals. But this research also shows the public knows little about cloning.

Cloning differs from genetic engineering. A cell taken from a socalled donor animals is grown into an embryo (胚胎) in the laboratory. Next, the embryo is placed into the uterus (子宮) of a female animal. If the process is successful, the pregnancy reaches full term and a genetic copy of the donor animal is born.

When India was seeking independence from Britain, the country's Muslim population real?ized that if India became independent, the country would be governed mainly by Hindus. They did not want to be ruled by people of a different religion.

In 1946,the Muslim League organized a day of " Direct Action". This resulted in Muslims killing Hindus. Attempts to stop the unrest and bring the two sides together failed. It seemed that there would be war in India. The British tried to help the two sides reach an agreement.

Although Gandhi was against the division of India, his opinion however was ignored by the major political parties―the Muslim League and Hindu Congress Party. When no agreement could be reached, the decision was made to divide the country into two sections following inde?pendence.

The task of dividing the country was impossible. In many places there were equal numbers of Hindu and Muslim people. Finally,a British man was given the task of drawing the line which created the Muslim state of Pakistan and divided India forever. He was chosen for his neutral position,as neither the Hindus nor the Muslims trusted each other.

India gained its independence on 15th August,1947,and a period of great violence fol?lowed. Hindus and Muslims killed each other. Many people lost their lives. The Indian Army, which was supposed to stop the fighting, either did nothing or actively joined in the killing.

There was death everywhere. Millions of Muslims fled to Pakistan while Hindus headed to?wards India from Pakistan. This movement lasted for months.

Gandhi was saddened by the killings. He could not prevent the disaster, but he was very upset. The final part of the tragedy was his being murdered. He was killed by a Hindu who did not agree with Gandhi's wish for Hindus and Muslims to live together in peace.

By Five-year-old Pepper has learned to open windows and let himself out every night by hopping onto a kitchen worktop and using his paws to turn the latch.

So when a fire broke out while his owners were Christmas shopping, the quickthinking puss leapt into action and opened the window to allow the acrid smoke to escape.

The billowing cloud of ash alerted neighbours, and firefighters rushed to the scene and ex?tinguished the blaze before it spread to the rest of the house.

Owner Sharon White said, "He first did it (opened the window) at a dinner party, and everyone was applauding him. I think it spurred him on. He can climb back in through the win?dow by jumping diagonally onto the ledge as well,so he really does come and go as he pleases."

Sharon and her husband Phil were handed Pepper over four years ago after a neighbour could no longer look after it. Pepper developed a "fierce independent streak" and would often leave the house for days on end.

The dramatic fire started at 4p. m. on Saturday after the couple nipped to the shops and left their microwave on a ten minute timer, which then caught fire.

Sharon said , " We put something in the microwave for ten minutes and then popped out to do our Christmas shopping in the local town. I discovered on the way that I had left my purse at home but decided not to turn around. It was my sister-in-law who lives next door that rang us about two hours into our trip and said , ' You had better get home as there is quite a lot of smoke coming out of your house and the fire brigade are here. ' We are thankful our neighbours did not just dismiss the smoke as a bonfire."

Firefighters rushed to their £ 350,000 house and extinguished the flames before they could spread, and the kitchen suffered only smoke damage. There was some damage to the kitchen, but it was isolated,so nothing serious happened compared to what it could have been.

"He's got a real mind of his own and is usually a bit of a pain. But on this occasion we're grateful,as without him and our neighbours, the fire could have been so much worse."

Onions make you cry,add flavor to food and are praised for their medical benefits. Now the vegetable has another use―powering up green energy.

A new system was first used on Friday that converted onion juice into electricity at Gills Onions, the largest fresh onion processor in the United States.

The Oxnard,Californiabased company expects its new onionfueled power to reduce its electric bill by $700,000 a year and cut its annual greenhouse gas emissions by up to 30 ,000 tons.

The happy ending to this green energy tale, however, started with another question:how to get rid of onion waste.

"When we peel an onion,35 to 40 percent of the onion comes off before we have a usable onion. That's the top, tail and skin around the onion before you get to the meat," said Steven Gill, coowner of the 25-year-old company.

They used to put the waste into the fields for composting, but that became a problem. Ten years ago,Gill started looking at technology for a solution.

"We ended up cutting up the skins as they come out of the plant and extracting all the juice, which is very high in sugars, and bacteria love that stuff," Gill said.

In the new system, bacteria produce methane gas from the juice. The gas then goes to two 300-kilowatt fuel cells, creating enough power for 460 homes. The company expects to get 35-40 percent of its electricity from the onsite generator.

The company invested $9. 5 million in the project and will receive $ 2. 7 million from Southern California Gas Co.,as part of a state program to encourage selfcontained generation by businesses. In addition to cutting its electric bill, the company will save $400,000 in trans?port expense and expects payback in six years.
