【題目】The behavior of a building's users may be at least as important as its design when it comes to energy use, according to new research from the UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC). The UK promises to reduce its carbon emissions (排放)by 80 percent by 2050, part of which will be achieved by all new homes being zero carbon by 2016. But this report shows that sustainable building design on its own—though extremely important—is not enough to achieve such reductions: the behavior of the people using the building has to change too.

The study suggests that the ways that people use and live in their homes have been largely ignored by existing efforts to improve energy efficiency, which instead focus on architectural and technological developments.

“Technology is going to assist but it is not going to do everything,”explains Katy Janda, a UKERC senior researcher, “consumption patterns of building users can defeat the most careful design.” In other words, old habits die hard, even in the best designed eco home.

Another part of the problem is information. Households and bill payers don't have the knowledge they need to change their energy use habits. Without specific information, it's hard to estimate the costs and benefits of making different choices. Feedback(反饋) facilities, like smart meters and energy monitors, could help bridge this information gap by helping people see how changing their behavior directly affects their energy use; some studies have shown that households can achieve up to 15 percent energy savings using smart meters.

Social science research has added a further dimension, suggesting that individuals' behavior in the home can be personal and cannot be predicted—whether people throw open their windows rather than turn down the thermostat (恒溫器) , for example.

Janda argues that education is the key. She calls for a focused program to teach people about buildings and their own behavior in them.

1As to energy use, the new research from UKERC stresses the importance of ________.

A. zero carbon homes

B. the reduction of carbon emissions

C. sustainable building design

D. the behavior of building users

2The underlined word “which” in Paragraph 2 refers to“________”.

A. their homes B. existing efforts

C. developments D. the ways

3What are Katy Janda's words mainly about?

A. The importance of changing building users' habits.

B. The necessity of making a careful building design.

C. The variety of consumption patterns of building users.

D. The role of technology in improving energy efficiency.

4The information gap in energy use________.

A. affects the study on energy monitors

B. brings about problems for smart meters

C. can be bridged by feedback facilities

D. will be caused by building users' old habits

【題目】Towards evening, Jennifer was walking on the beach with a gentle breeze(微風(fēng))blowing through her hair. Looking up at the golden red sun ball, she was surprised by its color, deep red in the middle, softly fading(褪色)into yellow. She could hear nothing but the waves and the seagulls flying up above in the sky.

The atmosphere(空氣)relaxed her. This was what she needed. “It’s getting late,” she thought, “I must go home. My parents will be wondering where I am.” She wondered how her parents would react when she got home after the three days she was missing. She kept on walking, directing herself to bungalow (平房)163, where she spent every summer holiday. The road was deserted(荒蕪). She walked slowly and silently. Just in a few hundred meters, she would have been safe in her house.

It was really getting dark now. She wished she had her favorite coat on. It might keep her really warm. She imagined having it with her. This thought dissipated(消散) when she finally saw her front door. It seemed different. Nobody had taken care of the outside garden for a few days. She was shocked: her father was usually so strict about keeping everything clean and tidy, and now…

She entered the house. First, she went into the kitchen and saw a note written by her father, “Dear Ellen, there’s some coffee ready; I went looking.” But where was Ellen? On the right side of the hallway was her parents’ room. She went in and saw her. Her mother, lying on the bed, was sleeping. Her face looked so tired, as if she hadn’t slept for days. She was really pale. Jennifer would have wanted to wake her up, but she looked too tired. So Jennifer just fell asleep beside her. When Jennifer woke up, something was different. She wasn’t in her mother’s room and she wasn’t wearing the old clothes she ran away in. She was in her cozy bed in her pajamas(睡衣).

It felt so good being back home. Suddenly she heard a voice. “Are you feeling better now, dear? You know you got us very, very scared.”

【題目】There are two kinds of memory: short-term and long-term. Information in long-term memory can be remembered at a later time when it is needed. The information may be kept for days or weeks. However, information in short-term memory is kept for only a few seconds, usually by repeating the information over and over. The following experiment shows how short-term memory has been studied.

Henning studied how students who are learning English as a second language remember vocabulary. The subjects in his experiment were 75 college students. They represented all levels of ability in English: beginning, intermediate (中等), and native speaking students.

To begin, the subjects listened to a recording of a native speaker reading a paragraph in English. Following the recording, the subjects took a 15-question test to see which words they remembered. Each question had four choices. The subjects had to circle the word they had heard in the recording, Some of the questions had four choices that sound alike. For example, weather, whether, wither, and wetter are four words that sound alike. Some of the questions had four choices that have the same meaning. Method, way, manner, and system would be four words with the same meaning. Finally the subjects took a language proficiency test.

Henning found that students with a lower proficiency in English made more of their mistakes on words that sound alike; students with a higher proficiency made more of their mistakes on words that have the same meaning. Henning's results suggest that beginning students hold the sound of words in their short-term memory, and advanced students hold the meaning of words in their short-term memory.

【1】 Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Information in short-term memory is different from that in long-term memory.

B. Long-term memory can be achieved only by training.

C. It is easier to test short-term memory than long term memory.

D. Henning gave a separate test on vocabulary to his students.

【2】 From Henning's result we can see that ______.

A. beginners have difficulty distinguishing the pronunciation of words

B. advanced students always remember words by their meaning

C. it is difficult to remember words that sound alike

D. it is difficult to remember words that have the same meaning

【3】 The word "subject" in the passage means ______.

A. memory

B. the theme of listening material

C. a branch of knowledge studied

D. the student experimented on

【4】The passage centers on ______.

A. memory B. two kinds of memory

C. short-term memory D. an experiment on student

Recently, as the development of the Internet, there is a kind of language calling Web language. Some people even speak Chinese mixed with English letters. The other day our class had a discussion about if we should welcome the Web language.

Forty percent of the students think it ridiculous. They argue that it does no good helping people communicate, nor is it useful for learning English. Besides, it’ll make Chinese more standard and pure, finally ruining our mother tongue. However, 60% of our class is fond of it. They think it is simple, convenience and helpful in expressing them. What’s more, it may make the language more interesting.

Personally, it’s not good habit to use the Web language. It may be popular, but you may also make yourself be misunderstood.
