In the village where I grew up, everyone knew an old man, that spent all his time in painting. People that lived in the village used to admiring his works and he often gave his paintings to his friends. Whether he was offered money, he would never take it. He said he painted for a pleasure. He once gave one of his paintings to my father, who actually wasn’t interesting in art. Years later I found at our old house. By that time the old man had died and people had started to recognize his paintings as great work of art, which were worth lots of money. So an art gallery make me an offer of $5,000 for this painting and I nearly sold it, so then I decided not to. It reminds me of my childhood and of the old man who didn’t real want to make money by painting.

1. thatwho 2. admiring→admire 3. Whether→If 4. 去掉a 5. interesting→interested 6. found后 it 7. work→works 8. make→made 9. so→but 10. real→really

此處為固定搭配:used to do“過去常常做……”。

3. Whether→If 考查引導(dǎo)詞。 此處應(yīng)用if引導(dǎo)讓步狀語(yǔ)從句,用whether句意不同,故改為if。

故去掉a。

6. found后加 it 考查代詞。

8. make→made 考查時(shí)態(tài)。

9. so→but 考查連接詞。

Online Degrees

Today, you can earn a degree from a major university without ever having sat in one of their classrooms. Many colleges and universities are offering online courses and degree programs now.

Online Learning Programs

With a computer and an Internet connection, you can earn a degree from home, work, or anywhere else for that matter. Online degree programs follow much the same routines as traditional learning, with a few twists. There are lectures, but they won't be in person. There are assignments (作業(yè)), but you won't hand them to your instructor. In most situations, you are free to “go to class” when it fits your schedule. If you get a phone call during class, you don't have to miss anything. If you get sick, you don't have to ask for someone's notes, and you just visit the lecture later.

You'll communicate with your instructor by e-mail, chat room and instant messaging. Your classroom will live in a special software program. Contrary to popular belief, you will have close contact with other students and the instructor.

Evaluating the Program

There are a lot of questions to ask before you make your selection, such as:

How do students interact with each other?

Online programs can use chat rooms, instant messaging, teleconferencing, and video conferencing to communicate. The key is to find a program that has this interaction built into it and even requires it.

What kind of reputation does the school have?

It may seem simple-a good school will have a good online program. This reputation, however, may not be as straightforward as you think. It's not uncommon for a great school to have a weak program or two. So you'd better look at the overall quality of the school and make a judgment.

The Employers' View

As more and more employees get online degrees and use them in the workforce(職場(chǎng)) , hiring managers will begin to feel more secure about the quality of education these people have.

1In which way is online education special?

A. If you get sick, you'll miss the lecture.

B. There are lectures, but you don't need to meet the lecturers.

C. If you get a phone call during class, you will miss something.

D. There are assignments, and you must hand them to your instructor.

2What is the most important part of online communication?

A. To use e-mails.

B. To look for a program with interaction.

C. To use chat rooms and instant messaging.

D. To use teleconferencing and video conferencing.

3For whom is the passage probably written?

A. College students.

B. Hiring managers.

C. Adult students.

D. High school students.

Dear Sir,

Having read about your newspaper’s decision to start a campaign for protecting the environment, I decide to write you this letter.

The state of our park is very shocked, with rubbish everywhere. I was used to find a trip to the park very relaxing. Upon the arrival of spring, beautiful birds would sing happy in the park. I enjoyed this very much. Therefore, now I just find it tiring, because I have to pick up rubbish where I am going to sit. The grass is covered on plastic bags and food. I am sad that the young people of today do not clean up after themselves before he leave the park. There are so much interesting animals and insects living in our parks. It would be shame if they were destroyed because of people’s activity there.

Yours
