What Is Emotional Eating?

Emotional eating is when people use food as a way to deal with feelings instead of satisfying hunger. __【1】__ Have you ever finished a whole bag of chips out of boredom or downed cookie after cookie while preparing for a big test? But when done a lot especially without realizing it emotional eating can affect weight, health, and overall well-being.

Not many of us make the connection between eating and our feelings.

__2 One of the biggest myths about emotional eating is that it’s caused by negative feelings. Yes, people often turn to food when they’re stressed out, lonely, sad, anxious, or bored. But emotional eating can be linked to positive feelings too, like the romance of sharing dessert on Valentine’s Day or the celebration of a holiday feast. Sometimes emotional eating is tied to major life events, like a death or a divorce. _3_

Emotional eating patterns can be learned: A child who is given candy after a big achievement may grow up using candy as a reward for a job well done. _4__ It’s not easy to “unlearn” patterns of emotional eating. But it is possible. And it starts with an awareness of what’s going on.

We’re all emotional eaters to a degree. But for some people emotional eating can be a real problem, causing serious weight gain or other problems. The trouble with emotional eating is that once the pleasure of eating is gone, the feelings that cause it remain. __5__ That’s why it helps to know the difference between physical hunger and emotional hunger.

Next time you reach for a snack, wait and think about which type of hunger

is driving it.

A. Believe it or not, we’ve all been there.

B. If a crying boy gets some cookies, he may link cookies with comfort.

C. One study found that people who eat food like pizza become happy afterwards.

D. And you often may feel worse about eating the amount or type of food you like.

E. Understanding what drives emotional eating can help people take steps to change it.

F. Boys seem to prefer hot, homemade comfort meals, while girls go for chocolate and ice cream.

G. More often, though, it’s the countless little daily stresses that cause someone to seek comfort in food.

【題目】A mouse looked through a crack in the wall to see the farmer and his wife opening a package: What food might it contain? He was astonished to discover that it was a mouse trap!

Retreating to the farmyard, the mouse declared the warning, “There is a mouse trap in the house, there is a mouse trap in the house.”

The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said, “Mr Mouse, I can tell you this is a grave concern to you, but it is of no consequence to me, I cannot be bothered by it.”

The mouse turned to the pig and told him, “There is a mouse trap in the house.” “I am so sorry, Mr Mouse,” sympathized the pig, “but there is nothing I can do about it but pray; be assured that you are in my prayers.”

The mouse turned to the cow, who replied, “A mouse trap, am I in grave danger, huh?”

So the mouse returned to the house, head down and depressed to face the farmer’s mouse trap alone.

That very night a sound was heard throughout the house, like the sound of a mouse trap catching its prey. The farmer’s wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she did not see that it was an evil snake whose tail the trap had caught. The snake bit the farmer’s wife. The farmer rushed her to the hospital. She returned home with a fever. Now everyone knew to treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup’s main ingredient. His wife’s sickness continued so that friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock. To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig. The farmer’s wife did not get well, in fact, she died, and so many people came for her funeral. The farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide meat for all of them to eat.

So the next time you hear that someone is facing a problem and think that it does not concern you, remember that when the least of us is threatened, we are all at risk.

【1】We could see from the passage that the mouse was ______.

A. kind and warm-hearted B. well-informed

C. good at cheating others D. foolish and rude

【2】Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. The pig was comparatively less friendly than the others in the farmyard.

B. The mouse trap that the mouse discovered was not a practical one.

C. The farmer and his wife trapped an evil snake that night.

D. The farmer’s family was in fact poor and they had no friends.

【3】The underlined word “ingredient” (Paragraph 7) refers to ______.

A. the mouse B. the pig

C. the snake D. the chicken

【4】What can we learn from the story?

A. Better safe than sorry.

B. Traps are usually well disguised.

【題目】There is a large percentage of Asian people in the US. They’re hard working, respectful but strange sometimes. If you don’t understand the culture, you will get some problems with them. Asian people are different from any other cultures if you think you know them, you might want to think again.

How are they different? When it comes to most Asian culture, respect is everything. You can do anything you want but don't disrespect an Asian man. You will get some real consequences afterward and especially if he is your boss. It’s something called face saving in the Asian culture. It’s ridiculous sometimes but it’s their culture. Sometimes their culture can come in between their relationship at work. Asian people might expect a lot of respect from their co-workers when their co-workers just see them as an equal.

Americans are very different from Asian people. If you’re Asian, you might want to understand the American culture and even adapt to their culture if you work with them. It will be easier for you since you’re in their countries. Imagine an American working in China, expecting Chinese co-workers to get along with him when he criticizes them straight out on every single matter in front of everyone. I think they will take him outside and take care of him. It just doesn’t work that way with Asian people.

If you’re an American boss giving your Asian employee a review, you will see that they will have a problem with your negative remarks. They will think that you don’t like them, disrespectful, and want to get rid of them; when in fact, you’re just doing your job. Of course, it’s not fair for you as an American boss but just expect that it can be something that is on your Asian employee’s mind.

【1】The Americans can’t get along well with the Asians probably because______.

A. their cultures are different

B. they don’t like each other

C. both of them are too proud

D. they have different political views

【2】The underlined phrase “face saving” in Paragraph 2 probably means_____.

A. saving some money for later use

B. making faces to please your boss

C. showing some respect to somebody

D. helping somebody out of trouble

【3】 From the third paragraph we can know that it is difficult_________.

A. for the Asians to accept the culture in America

B. for the Americans to adapt to the culture in China

C. for people to learn the culture in a foreign country

D. for people to follow the culture in their own country

【4】The negative remarks an American boss gives on your work probably mean he/she ____________________.

A. doesn’t like you any longer

B. thinks you are not worth respecting

C. offer you some better advice

D. wants you to improve your work

During last summer holiday, I found part-time job, worked in a toothbrush factory at night. Not until I experienced it did I realized that it was no easy job. I went to work when my parents were going to bed. On the morning, when my parents were going to work, I came to home to sleep.

This backward schedule was very tough for me that I often felt tiring. But I am glad that I had this forgettable experience.
