Two Languages or One?

　　A student is learning to speak British English. He wonders: Can they understand me? Learners of English often ask: What are the difference between British and American English? How important are these differences?

　　Certainly, there are some differences between British and American English. There are a few differences in grammar. For example, speakers of British English say “in hospital” and “Have you got a pen?” Americans say “in the hospital” and “Do you have a pen?” Pronunciation is sometimes different. Americans usually sound ther's in words like “bird” and “work”. Some speakers of British English do not sound ther's in these words. There are differences between British and American English in spelling and vocabulary(詞匯). For example, “colour” and “vapour” are British, “color” and “vapor” are American.

　　These differences in grammar, pronunciation, spelling and vocabulary are not important, however. For the most part, British and American English are the same language.

But mothers being mothers，she just went up to the man and told him in firm tones：“Please enter my daughter's name. It is Ghagra Geeta Bali.”
“It is what?” the man asked，naturally a little taken aback.
“G-h-a-g-r-a G-e-e-t-a B-a-l-i. There she is，”she replied while pointing to her daughter. The crowd standing around also turned to stare. All Ghagra Geeta Bali wanted then was for the earth to open up and swallow her.
That did not happen．But the following week she received a call．It was from the recording company that had announced the scheme. And they told her that she was the chosen one
“It is all because of your name，” said the public relations  man  who had called.“Mr Faridabadi took one look at it in the list and said that he couldn't wait to meet the brave girl bearing it．”

V is for VULNERABILITY(harm). Though we may feel afraid to let another too close, no relationship will go anywhere without risking vulnerability. Entrepreneur Jim Rohn says, "The walls we build around us to keep out the sadness also keep out the joy." And the love.
E is for EMOTIONAL INTIMACY(親密). Learn to be open. Learn to communicate freely. What kinds of relationships you make are largely determined by how openly you have learned to communicate.
L is for LAUGHTER. Victor Borge got it right when he said, "Laughter is the shortest distance between two people." It's also the most enjoyable.
For relationships that can really go somewhere, just remember the word "TRAVEL." Then enjoy the trip!

WASHINGTON(Reuters)-People who drink two or more sweetened soft drinks a week have a much higher risk of pancreatic cancer(胰腺癌)，an unusual but deadly cancer，researchers reported on Monday．
People who drank mostly fruit juice instead of sodas did not have the same risk，the study
of 60,000 people in Singapore found．
Sugar may be to blame but people who drink sweetened sodas regularly often have other
poor health habits，said Mark Pereira of the University of Minnesota，who led the study．
“The high levels of sugar in soft drinks may be increasing the level of insulin(胰島素)in The body,which we think contributes to pancreatic cancer cell growth,”Pereira said in a statement．
Writing in the joumal Cancer Epidemiology，Biomarkers & Prevention，Pereira and colleagues
said they followed 60,524 men and women in the Singapore Chinese Health Study for l4 years．
Over that time，140 of the volunteers developed pancreatic cancer．Those who drank two or
more sweetened soft drinks a week had an 87 percent higher risk of being among those who got
pancreatic cancer．
Pereira said he believed the fndings would apply elsewhere。
“Singapore is a wcahhy country with excellent heahhcare．Favorite pastimes(消遣)are
eating and shopping，so the findings should apply to other western countries，”he said．
But Susan Mayne of the Yale Cancer Center at Yale University in Connecticut was cautious．
“Although this study found a risk，the finding was based on a relatively small number of
