I have been teaching in the United States for three semesters. During this time, I have been very impressed with the hardworking American students. Tuition fee (學(xué)費(fèi)) in American universities are pretty expensive. Most American students receive little, if any, financial support. As a result, they have to work hard to pay for their tuition and other basic expenses. Tertiary (高等) education is a necessity in today’s workforce. Young people with higher education are rewarded with a good career and better salary. So how do American students support themselves?

All my American students have to work to pay for their tuition. For this reason, most universities provide limited jobs for students who need economic help. They also help students search for jobs in the community. I have been touched to see some students are so worn out from their jobs that they doze in my classroom. In addition to taking part-time jobs, students are also expected to take part in various social and sporting activities and, in fact, those who do not take part in are often looked down upon by their peers.

A number of American university students are married with families, or are single parents. These students are faced with the additional burden of raising a family. They have to spend much time, money and energy caring for their children and family. Most American university professors are strict. They test students on every unit in their course, in addition to mid-term and final exams in each semester. A lack of preparation by students may result in their failure. This means the loss of a lot of money and possibly future employment opportunities for these students. For this reason, many American students will study or stay up all night before an exam, in an effort to pass.

In contrast, Chinese students have a much easier time, because most Chinese parents pay for their kids’ tertiary education. Moreover, Chinese students do not need to worry about raising children or maintaining a family. So, Chinese students have no reason for not studying hard and achieving good marks.

1.Which of the following is not the difficulty American students have to face?

A.They have to work hard to pay for the high tuition fee.

B.Many American students have a burden of a family.

C.They need a better education to get a best job.

D.They have to pass strict tests to complete their education.

2. Which of the following statement is NOT TRUE according to the passage?

A.American students have no time to think of physical exercise.

B.Sporting activities are popular among American students.

C.American students should take part in various social activities.

D.Those who don’t participate in social and sporting activities are usually unpopular with their peers.

3.Compared with American students, Chinese university students __________.

A.have no difficulty in raising a family

B.live an easy life in universities

C.don’t have to take full-time jobs

D.have more duty to make greater progress

4.This passage mainly deals with __________.

A.part-time jobs chosen by American students

B.the high fees of American universities

C.difficult lives American students have to face

D.different opinions on American universities

There are two methods by which hydrogen (氫) can be used to power cars. The first way is to use hydrogen to drive the engine, in much the same way as many cars use gas. The second method is to use the reaction of hydrogen with oxygen in a battery, making the car a kind of electric one.

The dream of producing hydrogen in the car while driving along by electrolyzing(電解)water is a long way off, so we are still at the period of batteries and filling the tank with hydrogen gas. This is the difficulty for potential car users and producers. There are only sixteen hydrogen filling stations in Los Angeles and none in 99% of other cities worldwide.

Indeed, some of the big name automobile producers have pulled out of the race to put the first practical hydrogen car on the streets. Ford and GM have announced that they are pulling out in America and so has Renault in France.

However, the Japanese companies are pressing on. In fact, Honda introduced its first hydrogen fuel cell car in 1999. They are now producing second generation hydrogen car known as the FCX Clarity. Guess where they are available for sale? In only one city because of its filling stations.

Honda thinks that they could go into full-scale production of the FCX Clarity by 2020 if the world is prepared for them by then.

Then there are hydrogen-powered buses in several European cities including Amsterdam, Barcelona, Hamburg, London, Luxembourg and Madrid. Lotus, the makers of London taxis, have announced that they propose to manufacture hydrogen-powered taxis in time for the London Olympics.

So, the hydrogen vehicle is out there and the numbers will be growing fairly soon. The buses go back to their bus station, where an electrolyzing machine changes water into fuel for them to fill up on and the same will be the case for many of London’s taxis.

Unfortunately, getting fuel is not the only difficulty for the average motorist, a number of these vehicles cost about $300,000 each.

1.According to the text, hydrogen-powered buses ________.

A.can easily be filled up with gas.

B.a(chǎn)re likely to sell well in the future.

C.a(chǎn)re mainly used in the United States

D.won’t be used in the London Olympics

2.What does the underlined word “them” in paragraph 5 refer to?

A.Japanese companies

B.Hydrogen buses

C.The FCX Clarity

D.Filling stations

3.Where are hydrogen cars currently available for sale?

A.In Barcelona

B.In Hamburg

C.In London

D.In Los Angeles

4.We can learn from the text that ________.

A.there are sixty hydrogen filling stations all over the world

B.hydrogen vehicles fueled by water will be very expensive

C.Honda will mass-produce the FCX Clarity by 2012

D.Honda produced its first hydrogen car in 1989

Being less than perfectly well-dressed in a business setting can result in a feeling of discomfort. And the sad truth is that “clothing mismatches” on the job can ruin the day of the person who is wearing the inappropriate attire(著裝)—and the people with whom he or she works.

Offices vary when it comes to dress codes. Some businesses have very strict standards for office attire, while others maintain a more relaxed attitude. However, it is always important to remember that no matter what your company’s attitude is, you are working in a business environment and you should dress properly. Certain items may be more appropriate for evening wear than for a business meeting, just as shorts and a T-shirt are better suited for the beach than for an office environment. Your attire should reflect both your environment and your position. A senior president has a different image to maintain than that of a secretary. Like it or not, you will be judged by your appearance.

This is never more apparent than on “dress-down days”, when what you wear can say more about you than any business suit ever could. In fact, people will pay more attention to what you wear on dress-down days than on “business professional ” days. Thus, when dressing in “business casual” clothes, try to put some good taste into your choices, recognize that the “real” definition of business casual is to dress just one notch(等級(jí)) down from what you would normally wear on business-professional attire days.

Remember, there are borders between your career and our social life. You should dress one way for play and another way when you mean business. Always ask yourself where you are going and how other people will be dressed when you get there. Is the final destination the opera, the beach, or the office? Dress properly and you will discover the truth in the principle that clothes make the man—and the woman. When you’re in doubt, it’s safe to be on the side of dressing slightly more traditionally than the situation demands.

1.What is the passage mainly about?

A.How to dress properly in a business setting.

B.How to choose appropriate attire.

C.Appropriate attire will make a big difference

D.Improper dress will make a person uncomfortable.

2.Which statement best describes “dress-down days”?

A.You can wear whatever you like.

B.People are usually more careful about dressing.

C.We can’t judge a person’s taste by his clothes.

D.People’s clothes don’t receive much attention.

3.Which of the following is NOT the rule offered in the passage about business dress?

A.Dress a bit traditionally if you are not sure about proper dress for an occasion.

B.Think about how others will dress if invited to a dinner.

C.For a business meeting and a concert, you should dress differently.

D.Ask others for advice when you are not sure about what to dress.

Some schools that are not year-round often have summer programs. In many cases, students take summer classes to repeat a subject they failed. This way they get a second chance to succeed. But schools also offer summer classes to students who want to be free of a required class during the next school year.

Generally, students in these classes want to take fewer subjects during the year because they are involved in a lot of activities. They might be involved in sports or music programs. Or both – and more.

These summer school students do the same amount of work as if they took the class during the school year. But they do it in a much shorter time, one or two months. They say it makes for a lot of reading and homework and not much time for anything else. Some education experts are worried about high school students who take summer school because of pressure to attend a top university.

The New York Times recently reported about summer classes at one of the best high schools in the United States. New Trier High School is in Winnetka, Illinois. Almost six hundred students are in school this summer. Only twenty are repeating classes that they failed. The others are in difficult courses like physics and history.

The students say taking classes like these in the summer means that they can take even more difficult classes next year. They say this shows not only that they are serious about their studies but that they have experienced the most difficult high school program.

Another place with a lot of students in summer school is Palo Alto, California. The Mercury News reported that about twenty percent of the students in the city schools are in class this summer. That is more than two thousand teenagers.

A third are in classes they failed before. The others are taking subjects they do not have time for during the normal school year.

But they are not taking subjects like physics and history. The students in Palo Alto are in classes like creative writing, film studies, literature and cooking.

65. What’s the biggest difference between the summer classes in New Trier High School and in Palo Alto?

A.There are more students attending classes that they failed before in Palo Alto.

B.Some students in Palo Alto learn some special skills instead of taking physics and history.

C.Some students in Palo Alto take some subjects so that they can join in sports or music programs later.

D.The students’ attitude towards studies in Palo Alto is worse than that in New Trier High School.

66. What can we infer from the passage?

In many English homes four meals are served; they are breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner. These are the meals that are served in the homes of people who are well to do.

Breakfast may be served any time for seven to nine. It consist of porridge, bacon and eggs (boiled or fried), butter toast or bread-and-butter with marmalade (酸果醬). Instead of bacon and eggs, fish may be served. Either tea or coffee is drunk at breakfast.

Lunch comes at about one o’clock. It generally consists of cold meat (left over from yesterday’s dinner), potatoes, and salad. After that there is bread or biscuits and cheese. Most people drink water at lunchtime; some drink beer or wine. It is not the custom to drink the spirits (烈性酒) like whisky or brandy even wealthy homes in the middle of the day.

Afternoon tea, taken between four and five, is the most informal meal of the day. If you are a friend of the family you may drop in for tea without an invitation or telling them that you are coming. Each person has a cup and saucer, a spoon and a small plate for bread-and-butter and cake. By the way, do not help yourself to cake first; bread-and-butter first, and then cake if there is any. Another piece of advice: do not put more than one piece of bread or cake on your plate at the same time.

Dinner is the most substantial (豐盛的) meal of the day and is a very formal meal. Many people even wear special clothes for dinner, so if you are asked out of dinner you must find out whether you are expected to wear a dinner suit; for you would feel very embarrassed if, when you go there, you were the only person in ordinary clothes. Dinner is generally served at about half past seven. All the members of the family sit down together and are on their best behavior. The head of the family sits at one end of the table; his wife sits at the other. If there is a guest, he generally sits in the place of honor, which is at the right of lady of the house. If there are several guests the most important is asked to sit there. During the meal conservation is carried on, you should try to get into the conversation with the person on your right or left, but you should not try to talk to someone who is a long way from you.
