As skies fill with millions of migrating birds, European scientists say the seasonal miracle appears to depend on a seeming contradiction: The fatter the bird, the more efficiently it flies. The results of their study contradict a central theory of aerodynamics(空氣動(dòng)力學(xué)), which predicts that the power needed to fly increases with weight.

For birds, apparently, the cost of flying with heavy fuel loads is considerably smaller than previously thought. Researchers found that red knot wading birds double their normal body weight of 100 grams before making their twice-a-year, nonstop commute between the British Isles and the Russian Arctic. Distance: 5,000 kilometres.

Another study in the journal Nature measured the benefits of flying in an aerodynamic V formation, which allows birds to save energy by gliding in the lead bird’s air stream.

Flying in formation, their heart rates were as much as 14.5 per cent lower than flying solo, according to Henri Wimerskirch, a French scientist. The findings help explain how birds complete difficult migrations. Researchers had assumed that thinner, more athletic birds would have the best chance of survival.

The first study suggests that building up fat deposits to be burned as fuel during the migration is worth more than the energy it takes to carry the additional weight. Heavier birds apparently use their muscles more efficiently.

In the study, researchers said their team studied the birds flown at different body masses during 28 simulated flights. They were injected with a small amount of water containing a radioactive element that enabled the team to measure the amount of energy burned.

How much will a red knot wading bird probably weigh before making its nonstop migrating flight?

_____________________________________________________________________________

86. The additional weight gained before the flight won’t increase the powered needed to fly; on the contrary, it works as _______________________________

87. How did scientists successfully conduct the first study?

___________________________________________________________________________________

88. We can infer from the studies on fat deposits and V formation flying that both factors _______________________________________________________________________________

85. 200 grams

86. fuel to be burned during the migration

87. By injecting birds with water containing a radioactive element and testing their different body masses during the flight.

88. Both factors work jointly and help birds fly efficiently and survive the tough long distance.

Test-taking tips

Do you sweat, check your pencil, and feel butterflies in your stomach as your teacher hands out the test paper? A lot of people feel anxious when it is time to take a test. Here are some tips for taking tests:

1 .Your memory recall will be much better if you have had enough rest. In a scientific study, people who got enough sleep before taking a math test did better than those who stayed up all night studying.

Read the test through first. Once you have the test paper in front of you, read over the entire test, checking out how long it is and all the parts that you are expected to complete.  2 .If something seems unclear before you start, do not panic: ask the teacher.

Focus on addressing each question individually.  3 . Instead, answer the best way you can or skip over the question and come back to it after you have answered other questions.

Relax.  4 .Of course you can not get up and move around in the middle of a test, but you can wiggle (扭動(dòng)) your fingers and toes, take four or five deep breaths. As we all know, It can be easy to forget things we know well. During a test, if you forget something and start to get tense, it suddenly becomes much more difficult to remember.

Finished already? Although most teachers will let you hand your test paper in early, it is usually a good idea to spend any extra time checking over your work.  5 .On the other hand, if you have 5 minutes until the bell rings and you are still writing, wind up whatever you are working on without panic.

A.  Be sure you have studied properly.

B.  Get enough sleep the night before the test.

C.  This will allow you to decide how much time you have for each section.

D.  As you take the test, if you do not know an answer, do not worry about it.

E.  As the teacher hands out the test paper, be sure you know what is expected of you.

F.  You can also add details that you may not have thought you’d have time for.

G.  If you are so nervous that you blank out, you might need a mini-break.

If you ever felt like your doctor was trying to push you out of the examination room before you had a chance to explain your condition you are not alone.

A new study from the Mayo Clinic shows that most people agree on what makes a good doctor and it definitely isn’t one who hurries through a visit.

A doctor’s skills can affect a patient’s emotional response and recovery very positively or very negatively, a research shows. Based on the new study, which surveyed 192 patients, it can be concluded that a model doctor should be confident, sympathetic, kind, personal forthright, respectful and thorough.

“What every patient wants is a doctor who pays them personal attention” said James Li, a doctor at the Mayo Clinic Division of Allergic Diseases Li is helping to develop programs for teaching doctors how to strengthen their interactions with patients.

“It’s really the duty of the medical community to design a health care system, so that doctors are able to exhibit those qualities for the good of the patients,” he said.

Many patients nowadays are directed to urgent care facilities or , for lack of good insurance, forced to go to emergency rooms for problems that used to be handled right away. In either case, wait time can be hours and actual face time with a doctor might be just seconds.

“The days when doctors remembered their patients’ names might no longer exit , but medical schools can  fill in this crack  by adding in the seven behavioral things into their training.” Li said.

“If patients have opportunities to tell their stories, to be asked questions and have the doctors describe understanding of what has been shared , it leaves them feeling like they’re heard ” Lisaid.
