Moses Mendelssohn, the grandfather of the well-known German composer(作曲家), was far from being handsome. Along with a rather short stature(身材), he had a hunchback(駝背) .
One day he visited a merchant in Hamburg who had a lovely daughter named Frumtje. Moses fell hopelessly in love with her. But Moses was refused by his ugly appearance
When it was time for him to leave, Moses picked up his courage and climbed the stairs to
her room to take one last chance to speak with her. She was a heavenly beauty, but caused him deep sadness by her refusal to look at him. After several attempts at conversation, Moses shyly asked, “Do you believe marriages are made in heaven?”
“Yes, ”She answered, still looking at the floor. “And do you?”
“Yes I do, ”He replied. “You see, in heaven at the birth of each boy, the God announces which
girl he will marry. When I was born, my future bride(新娘) was pointed out to me. Then the God added, ‘But your wife will be humpbacked. ’”“Right then and there I called out, ‘Oh God, a humpbacked woman would be a tragedy(不幸). Please, God, give me the hump and let her be beautiful. ’”

Do’s and Don’ts in Whale(鯨)Watching
The Department of  Fisheries and Oceans has developed guidelines for whale watching in Johnstone Strait, where killer whales are found on a daily basis each summer. It is strongly recommended that vessel(船只)operators follow these guidelines for all kinds of whales.
● Approach whales from the side, not from the front or the back.
● Approach no closer than 100 metres, then stop the boat but keep the engine on.
● Keep noise levels down-no horns, whistles or racing of engines.
● Start your boat only after the whales are more than 100 metres from your vessel.
● Leave the area slowly, gradually moving faster when you are more than 300 metres from the whales.
● Approach and leave slowly, avoiding sudden changes in speed or direction.
● Avoid disturbing groups of resting whales.
● Keep at low speeds and remain in the same direction if travelling side by side with whales.
● When whales are travelling close to shore, avoid crowding them near the shore or coming between the whales and the shore.
● Limit the time spent with any group of whales to less than 30 minutes at a time when within 100 to 200 metres of whales.
● If there is more than one vessel at the same observation spot, be sure to avoid any boat position that would result in surrounding the whales.
● Work together by communicating with other vessels, and make sure that all operators are aware of the whale watching guidelines.

Just five one-hundredths of an inch thick and light golden in color, the Lay's potato chip seems an unlikely weapon for global control. But its maker, Frito-Lay doesn't think so. "Potato chips are a snack food for the world , "said Salman Amin, the company's head of global marketing. Amin believes there is no corner of the world that can resist the attractions of a Frito-Lay potato chip.
Frito-Lay is the biggest snack maker in America owned by Pepsico and accounts for over half of the parent company's $ 3 billion profits every year. But the U.S. snack food market is largely saturated(飽和),and to grow, the company has to look overseas.
Its strategy rests on two beliefs: first, a global product offers economies of scale(規(guī)模) with which local brands cannot compete. And second, consumers in the 21st century are drawn to "global" as a concept. "Global" does not mean products that are consciously regarded as American, but ones that consumers--especially young people--see as part of a modern, innovative(創(chuàng)新的) world in which people are linked across cultures by shared beliefs and tastes. Potato chips are an American invention, but most Chinese, for example, do not know that Frito-Lay is an American company. Instead, Riskey, the company's research and development head, would hope they associate the brand with the new world of global communications and business.
With brand concept a key factor, Riskey ordered a redesign of the Frito-Lay logo(標(biāo)識(shí)). The logo, along with the company's long-held marketing image of its chips, would help make the company's global development very easy.
The managers admit that they try to change national eating habits to a food created in America, but they don't think that means economic imperialism (霸主).  "We're making products in those countries, we're adapting them to the tastes of those countries, building businesses and employing people and changing lives , "said Steve Reinemund, Pepsico's chief manager.

  1. 1.

    Amin's belief is that _________.

    1. A.
people all over the world enjoy eating their potato chips
    2. B.
the light golden color increases the attraction of their potato chips
    3. C.
they must find new ways to promote sales in their country
    4. D.
potato chips can hardly control the world market
  2. 2.

What do we learn about Frito-Lay from Paragraph 2?

    1. A.
It gives half of its profits to its parent company every year.
    2. B.
It needs to turn to the world market for development.
    3. C.
Its products used to be popular among overseas consumers.
    4. D.
Its development has caused fierce competition in the snack market.
  3. 3.

One of the concepts on which Frito-Lay bases its development strategy is that __________.

    1. A.
consumers worldwide today are attracted by global brands
    2. B.
products suiting Chinese consumers' needs bring more profits
    3. C.
local brands cannot compete successfully with American brands
    4. D.
products identified as American will have promising market value
  4. 4.

Why did Riskey have the Frito-Lay logo redesigned?

    1. A.
To suit changing tastes of young consumers.
    2. B.
To compete with other American chip producers.
    3. C.
To change the company's long-held marketing image.
    4. D.
To promote the company's strategy of globalization.

new “good,”  “amazing” is the new “OK, ” and “huge” is the new “big.”
I was in a restaurant in Washington D.C.last weekend and every question I asked was answered with exaggeration.
Me:How is the salmon?
Sever:Fantastic!
Me:Does it come with rice?
Sever:Absolutely!
Would a “good” and a “yes” have been enough? Of course!
My father is an average-sized man.He hasn’t gained weight or height for the past 30 years. Therefore, his size remains the same. However,in the same amount of time, his T-shirt size has gone from small to medium to large to extra large.
The reason for the exaggerated word is clear:we are bored with our lives. We want the next
—next thing now.Immediately!
And we also want others to think that we still care, that we can still be delighted, that we know that everything is just great.Even when deep inside we know it can’t be.Everything can’t be great.
I’m not a scientist,so many methods of proof leave little to be desired,or a lot to be desired,or an immensity(無(wú)限).
Listen to the voices around you.Listen to your own voices. There is nothing on the radio that is good or bad, weather is either beautiful or horrible.
Listen, the next time when someone asks you something and you agree, because when you
could simply say “yes”, instead you will say “absolutely’’ or “without doubt ” or “Oh,yeah, unquestionably ---- absolutely without doubt."
Have people forgotten what it is like to be OK? Simply OK with what they have and who they are? If everything is outstanding,if everything is the most amazing thing ever,is anything ever amazing at all?

Struggling in the US? Move to China!
I graduated from the university with a degree of civil engineering. It is a good field but my heart was not in it. I wanted to be an actor or work in the entertainment industry…living a creative life. My choice of civil engineering was really a mistake but I realized too late. As soon as I graduated, I moved straight to Los Angeles—the home of the film and television industry!
For three years, I tried to get a job in that field. I often worked as an extra in movies and TV shows—standing in the background while actors are in the foreground. This was fun for a while, but I wanted a real acting job, where I was speaking! Sadly, in Los Angeles, there is too much competition. Every race and age is represented: old, young, black, white, Asian and thousands of blondish-red haired Midwestern types like me. Being an extra couldn’t make enough money for me to live in Los Angeles. I had to do something else for money.
After three years of trying, I gave up my dream of being an actor and started a different career. I then tried network-marketing, but in the end, that failed. Seven years after graduating college, I was still in debt, still searching for a satisfactory life. I decided to go back to civil engineering.
However, I was starting to get very disappointed with my life. Why is life not like what I expected? I expected to have made a lot of money, gotten married, with a house and nice cars, kids, time freedom, etc. Millions of people lead lives with their dreams shelved, existing but not really living. I want my life to be different, more satisfactory, more alive. America was not providing that for me…
In addition, America was too expensive—always worrying about money was a headache. I wanted a life filled with adventure, romance, friendships, successes, and dreams realized.

I decided to move to China.

Looking back on my childhood, I am convinced that naturalists are born and not made. Although we were all brought up in the same way, my brothers and sisters soon left their pressed flowers and insects. Unlike them, I had no ear for music and languages. I was not an early reader and I could not do mental arithmetic.
Before World War I we spent our summer holidays in Hungary. I have only the dim(模糊的) memory of the house we lived in, of my room and my toys. Nor do I recall clearly the large family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who gathered next door. But I do have a clear memory of the dogs, the farm animals, the local birds, and above all, the insects.
I am a naturalist, not a scientist. I have a strong love of the natural world and my enthusiasm had led me into varied investigations(調(diào)查研究). I love discussing my favorite topics and enjoy burning the midnight oil reading about other people’s observations and discoveries. Then something happens that brings these observations together in my conscious(清醒的) mind. Suddenly you fancy you see the answer to the riddle, because it all seems to fit together. This has resulted in my publishing 300 papers and books, which some might honor with the title of scientific research.
But curiosity, keen(敏銳的) eyes, a good memory and enjoyment of the animal and plant world do not make a scientist: one of the excellent and essential qualities required is self-discipline, a quality I lack. A scientist, up to a certain point, can be made. A naturalist is born. If you can combine the two, you get the best of both worlds.

  1. 1.

The first paragraph tells us the author ______.

    1. A.
was interested in flowers and insects in his childhood
    2. B.
lost his hearing when he was a child
    3. C.
didn’t like his brothers and sisters
    4. D.
was born into a naturalist’s family
  2. 2.

The author can’t remember his relatives clearly because _______.

    1. A.
he didn’t live very long with them
    2. B.
      the family was extremely large
    3. C.
he was too young when he lived with them
    4. D.
he was fully occupied with observing nature
  3. 3.

It can be inferred from the passage that the author was _______.

    1. A.
a scientist as well as a naturalist
    2. B.
a naturalist but not a scientist
    3. C.
no more than a born naturalist
    4. D.
      first of all a scientist
  4. 4.

The author says that he is a naturalist rather than a scientist probably because he thinks he _______.

    1. A.
has a great deal of trouble doing mental arithmetic
    2. B.
lacks some of the qualities required of a scientist
    3. C.
