3.WASHINGTON-Thousands of public schools stopped teaching foreign languages in the last decade, according to a survey. But another contrary trend has educators and policy makers abuzz:a rush by schools in all parts of America to offer instructions in Chinese.
Some schools are paying for Chinese classes on their own,but hundreds are getting some help. The Chinese government is sending teachers from China to schools all over the world-and paying part of their salaries.
No one keeps an exact count, but rough calculations based on the government's survey suggest that perhaps 1,600 American public and private schools are teaching Chinese,up from 300 or so a decade ago.And the number is growing exponentially(成倍地).
"It's really changing the language education landscape of this country,"said Nancy C.Rhodes, director at the center.Other indicators point to the same trend."The number of students taking the Advanced Placement test in Chinese, introduced in 2007,has grown so fast that it is likely to pass German this year as the third most-tested A.P.language,after Spanish and French",said Trevor Packer, vice president at the College Board.
"We've all been surprised that in such a short time Chinese would grow to surpass A.P.German,"Mr.Packer said.
A decade ago, most of the schools with Chinese programs were on the East and West Coasts. But in recent years, many schools have started Chinese programs in heartland states, including Ohio and Illinois in the Midwest,Texas and Georgia in the South, and Colorado and Utah in the Rocky Mountain West.
America has had the study of a foreign language grow before, only to see the bubble burst. Many schools began teaching Japanese in the 1980s,after Japan emerged as an economic rival. But thousands have dropped the language, the survey found.Japanese is not the only language that has declined.Thousands of schools that offered French,German or Russian have stopped teaching those languages, too, the survey found.

D.Chinese is a necessary subject in most important tests.
27.What can we know from the last two paragraphs?B

13.Comparing ourselves with others isn't a recent phenomenon---it's part of our culture.As soon as we're able to form our own thoughts and opinions,we start comparing.Who's taller?Who's better at sports?Who has more friends?
Unlike other childish habits,the urge to measure up(攀比) doesn't ever really go away.In fact,it only increases when we become teens."At a younger age,I found myself wanting to be cool and wondering why I wasn't that cool,"said a junior student Michael Torres."So I began doing what they did in order,to fit in with my own friends."
We are flooded with the message that we should compare ourselves with others.Magazines,advertisements,stores-it becomes all about what other people have or what they've achieved.Social media adds another player to the problem.Facebook,Twitter and QQ offer a constant stream of updates about the people around us.She got accepted to Harvard?He bought the brand new Nikes?They're dating?
"If I go on Facebook or twitter and read about how wonderful everyone else is,I'm not feeling good about myself.It's going to make me feel worse,"said Mike Robbins,a senior student."I try not to let things like that affect me,but in the modern world of technology it's hard not to take notice of what others are doing,and sometimes you want to be just like them."
Before you get caught up in the comparison game,keep in mind one very important detail:When it comes to social media,we often present only the things we want people to see---the good fortunes,happy moments,delicious desserts and best smiles.
The deeper question is:Are people really posting things on social media that are true or are they simply doing it to present something to other people? It's what we do in our culture:"Look how great I am,""Look how smart I am,""Look how happy I am,"and sometimes that's true, but in a lot of cases,it's not.
While comparing ourselves to others can inspire us to get ahead and work harder,it can also drive us crazy.Next time you find yourself wondering if you measure up,remember this:What we have is not a measure of who we are.We already have worth as an individual when we're born.Everything else is what people think of us.

24.When do we start to compare ourselves with others?D.
A.When we go to junior schools
B.When we were born into the world
C.When we have Facebook or Tweeter

A.To show off their lives
B.To get advice from readers
C.To share happiness with others
D.To communicate useful information
26.The author presents the phenomenon of the comparison byB.
A.listing a lot of figures
B.giving facts and examples
C.providing scientific findings
D.comparing famous persons'opinions
27.From the passage,we learn that the authorC comparison with others.

18.Traditionally,fashion retailers(零售商)had four collections per year, one for each season but nowadays companies can design and manufacture (大量生產(chǎn))clothes in as little as four weeks.Fast fashion means that the latest designs that appear at the fashion shows in Paris,London, etc.can be copied and shown within a month.
The advantages of rapidly changing fashions are clear.Shortening the product life cycle means if a design doesn't sell well within a week,it is taken out of the shops and a new design is chosen. This is good for the manufacturer as it means vaster sales, and good for the customer as they can keep up with fast-moving trends cheaply-and every time they visit the store, there is something new.
However, there are also a number of disadvantages to this approach. One of them is the theft of ideas.Fashion houses spend a lot of time and money on new ideas, only to see these ideas copied for free by fast-fashion companies.Perhaps the greatest concern is the influence on the environment of wasted clothes.Buying twelve new sets of clothes rather than four means that more clothes will be thrown away.In addition, with fashions changing so quickly, cotton growers need to produce more cotton more cheaply, and that means using more chemicals.
At the other end of the fashion industry is designer clothing. At the same time as fast fashion is taking off in the West,Asian consumers are buying more and moer expensive, luxury brands. Many buy branded clothes just to show that they can afford them but others choose them for quality. What's your choice? We'd like to hear your comments about the fashion industry today.

32.According to the attraction of fast-fashion clothes for people?A
A.The low price.
B.The high quality.

D.The mass production.
33.Who are against fast fashion?A
A.Fashion designers.
B.Clothes producers.
C.Customers
D.Retailers.
34.What is people's biggest worry about fast fashion?A
A.It is harmful to the environment.
B.It leads to bad consumption habits.
C.It decreases fashion shows'popularity.
D.It greatly influences the planting of other crops.
35.What is the author's attitude towards fast fashion?D
A.Worried.
B.Doubtful.
C.Surprised.
D.Objective.

15.There are plenty of things you can feel positive knowing about Garfield-the cat who loves lasagna,hates Mondays and adores a teddy bear named Pooky.But last week,without warning,there rose a strange and sudden debate around a question about the famous cat that even creator Jim Davis needed to weigh in on:Is Garfield a boy,a girl,or no gender(性別)at all?
The argument appears to have begun when writer Virgil Texas came across a 2014Mental Floss interview with Davis where he described his tabby creation Garfield as"not really male or female or any particular race or nationality,young or old."
In response to the quote(引用),Virgil wrote on Twitter:"FACT:Garfield has no gender.This.Is.Definite."So sure was he of Garfield‘s true gender status that Virgil even took it upon himself to update the Garfield character Wikipedia page with the information.
But it was quickly clear that not everyone agreed with Virgil‘s edits,and thus began a war over the Wikipedia entry edits.Some mentioned that Garfield is male.Others wrote that it shouldn't matter at all whether Garfield is male or female.Washington Post reported that the battle took place over 60hours and eventually ended when Wikipedia shut things down by locking the page.
It was a statement that soon appeared to have been made in hurry as Jim Davis indeed soon joined the debate,shutting everything down in one line to Washington Post:"Garfield is male."The 71-year-old cartoonist also pointed out that Garfield has a girlfriend,Arlene,and claimed that his 2014quotes had been"taken out of context"."I've always said that I wanted to work with animals because they're not regarded as being any particular gender,race,age or ethnicity,"he said."In that sense,the humor could be enjoyed by a broader group."

24.What does the passage mainly discuss?A
A.An argument about the gender of Garfield.

C.An update of Wikipedia entry edits about Garfield.
D.The popularity of the famous cartoon character Garfield.
25.What does the underlined phrase"weigh in on"probably mean?B
A.Agree with.
B.Join in.
C.Put forward.
D.Care about.
26.The debate online upon the gender of Garfield was ended up byD.

7.You are what you eat.This saying has provided scientists with clues about the diet of hominids(原始人類)-our early relatives of 3million years ago.
Studying carbon atoms(碳原子)locked up in tooth enamel(琺瑯質(zhì)),two researchers argue against the widely held belief that hominids ate little more than fruits and leaves.Sponheimer and Julia Lee-Thorp of the University of Cape Town,South Africa,report their findings in Friday's Science.
There aren't many clues for us to know the life of early hominids.The shape of hominids'teeth offered the first clues.Large and flat-edged with thick enamel,they looked perfect for eating nuts and fruits,different from the sharp teeth one would want to tear into meat with.The first stone tools,which would help in eating meat,didn't appear until about half a million years later.
Scientists have also found marks on hominids'teeth with patterns very similar to those on the teeth of modern-day fruit eaters.Sponheimer and Lee-Thorp tried a new method,looking at the chemical composition(組成) of the tooth enamel.They studied the enamel for the carbon-13.Animals that eat grasses have higher carbon-13levels than those eating fruits and other plants.
What they found was that the teeth to the hominids had an in-between amount of carbon-13,which meant not only they were eating fruits,they were eating a lot of grasses,or animals eating grasses.The lower carbon-13levels could also come from eating certain types of insects.
But there are people who understand differently.Prof.Ungar of the University of Arkansas agrees the study offers new suggestions of hominids diet,but disagrees about the suggestion that meat could explain the lower carbon-13levels.
One suggestion might be true though-take good care of your teeth.In 3million years,a scientist might be using them to figure out what you ate for dinner.
32.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?C
A.Protect Your Teeth.
B.Where the Hominids lived.
C.What the Hominids Ate.
D.The Formation of Teeth Enamel.
33.Before the two scientists'findings,most people thought that hominidsD.
A.used tools to dig grass
B.had sharp teeth
C.lived half a million years ago
D.a(chǎn)te mainly fruits and leaves
34.The two scientists'findings were mainly based on the study aboutC.
A.the shape of hominids'teeth
B.the grasses of 3million years ago
C.the make-up of the tooth enamel
D.the teeth marks of early fruit eaters
35.What is it that Prof.Ungar finds doubtful?B
A.Hominids probably had different diets.
B.Hominids possibly ate grass-eating animals.
C.Hominids were basically fruit and grass eaters.
D.Hominids had lower level of carbon-13in the teeth.
