【題目】 Anyone who knew Jack knew him well. He was the first to hide under the bed covers every time the sky grew grey and thunder was heard in the distance. He was in great fear of storms. However, that day changed it all.

With dark clouds in the morning, Jack was in the car with his sister, Emily, who was driving them home. Jack was holding the sides of his seat tightly. As a result, his knuckles (指關(guān)節(jié)) turned white. Suddenly, the treacherous road conditions sent the car into a slide. The vehicle went off the wet and slippery road, rolled several times and finally rest upside down. Fortunately, both of them were wearing seat belts. Head bleeding heavily, Emily was conscious but unable to move. Thankfully Jack was unhurt.

Water poured through the broken windows of the car. Suddenly, Jack recalled something. He quickly unfastened the seat belt and moved out of the passenger window. With rain beating against his face and arms, Jack made his way to the driver’s side with great difficulty. He managed to pull her through the window. Suddenly, he felt a strong pain on his arms. It was only later that Jack realized the broken pieces of the window had cut them while he was pulling his sister through the window. Finally Jack dragged Emily up to the road. They were soon rescued.

Emily later recalled her terrifying experience and was truly amazed by his courage. Jack’s act of courage was motivated by his favourite book: The Little Engine That Could. In it, when everyone had given up hope, the Little Engine carried the heavy toys and candies over the hill to the children waiting on the other side. The Little Engine had shown courage and taken action.

Obviously, we cannot attribute Jack’s bravery to that one story but without doubt, the book had left a deep impression on him and inspired him to respond positively in a difficult situation.

1What made it difficult for Jack to go over to the driver’s side?

A.His fear.B.The heavy rain.

C.His injuries.D.The bad road condition.

2What does the underlined word “treacherous” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

A.Dangerous.B.Strange.

C.Special.D.Fantastic.

3How did Emily feel about Jack’s change?

A.Annoyed.B.Embarrassed.

【解析】

本文是記敘文。認識杰克的人都知道他非常害怕暴風雨。但是在一次大雨中,他勇敢地救出了妹妹Emily。

1細節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第三段中“With rain beating against his face and arms, Jack made his way to the driver’s side with great difficulty.”因為雨很大,雨水打在杰克的臉上和手臂上,杰克過去到駕駛座那邊就很困難。故選B項。

2詞義猜測題。根據(jù)第二段中劃線詞所在的句子“…road conditions sent the car into a slide. The vehicle went off the wet and slippery road”,可知,路況不好,路面又濕又滑,這樣汽車就打滑。因此可以猜測“treacherous”意思為“危險的”。故選A項。

3細節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第四段中“Emily later recalled her terrifying experience and was truly amazed by his courage. Emily真的被Jack的勇氣驚呆了。surprised amazed是同義詞。因此可知EmilyJack的變化感到驚訝。故選C項。

4推理判斷題。根據(jù)第四段中關(guān)于Jack 最喜歡的書“The Little Engine That Could”的介紹“In it, when everyone had given up hope, the Little Engine carried the heavy toys and candies over the hill to the children waiting on the other side.”,通過其中“the heavy toyscandies, the children”等詞可以看出,這本書是寫給孩子看的。故選C項。

【題目】 Earthquake rescue robots have experienced their final tests in Beijing. Their designers say with these robots, rescuers will be able to save lives during an earthquake.

This robot looking like a helicopter, is called the detector-bot. It’s about 4 meters long, and it took about 4 years to develop the model. Its main functions (作用) are to collect information from the air, and send goods of up to 30 kilos, to people trapped by an earthquake.

This robot has a high definition 360 degree panoramic (全景) camera. It can work day and night and will also be able to send the latest pictures from the quake area.

Dr. Qi Juntong, Chinese Academy of Science, said, “The most important feature of this robot is that it doesn’t need a distant control. We just set the destination (目的地) information on it, and then it takes off, and lands by itself. It flies as high as 3,000 meters, and as fast as 100 kilometers per hour.”

This robot has a different function — it can change as the environment changes. Its main job is to search for any signs of life in places where human rescuers are unable to go.

As well as a detector (探測器) that finds victims and detects poisonous gas, a camera is placed in the 40 centimeter long robot, which can work in the dark.

Another use for the rescuers is the supply part, with its 10 meter long pipe. People who are trapped in the ruins, will be able to get supplies including oxygen and liquids.

Experts have said that the robots will enter production, and serve as part of the national earth-quake rescue team as soon as next year.

1According to the passage, this robot________.

A.is carried by the helicopter

【題目】 Researchers in Japan have installed (安裝) on a train a speaker that barks like a dog and snorts like a deer in order to prevent collisions with animals on the tracks.

The country has been troubled by a problem with trains colliding with deer on its railways. According to Japan’s transport ministry, there were 613 cases of train services delayed for at least 30 minutes resulting from collisions with deer and other wild animals in 2018-19.

Deer are attracted to railway lines because of a need for iron in their diets. They lick () the rails to pick up iron filings caused by the action of wheels against tracks. This dietary need has led to a constant battle to keep the deer separate from the danger of a fast-moving train. In the past, flashing red lights and even lion faces have been unsuccessfully trialed in an attempt to keep deer off the tracks.

This new device has been invented by a team at the country’s Railway Technical Research Institute (RTRD). RTRI officials explain that deer have a habit of repeatedly snorting short, shrill sounds to warn other deer when they sense danger. The barking of the hunting dog, which drives deer to panic, strengthens the effect of the warning noise, according to the RTRI. When the deer hear a combination of a 3-second-long recording of a deer’s snort and 20 seconds of a barking dog, they panic and flee rapidly.

RTRI researchers say late-night tests, at times when deer are most frequently seen by railway tracks, have resulted in a 45 percent reduction of deer sighting. Future plans include still barking sites where deer are commonly seen, but the unpleasant noises will not be so loud in areas where people live beside the tracks.

1Why are deer attracted to train tracks?

A.To get close to the passing trail.B.To get nutrition from train tracks.

C.To hunt for food near the train tracks.D.To gather together at night near railways.

2What has been tried to solve the railway problem in Japan?

A.Robots.B.Hunting dogs.

C.Lion face paintings.D.Specially designed tracks.

3What do we know about the speaker?

A.Its inventors drew inspiration from deer’s habit.

B.It will be put to use in areas where deer appear.

C.It will affect people who live beside the track.

D.It has decreased more than half of deer sighting.

4What is the passage mainly about?

A.A dietary habit of deer.

B.A traffic problem caused by deer.

C.A battle between human and animals.

D.An invention designed to keep deer off the tracks.

【題目】 By the end of the year, editors of New York Times have picked the 4 best books of 2019, including fiction and non-fiction. Let’s see which one will take your fancy.

Disappearing Earth

By Julia Phillips

In the first chapter of this novel, two young girls vanish, sending shock waves through a town on the edge of the remote and mysterious Kamchatka Peninsula. What follows is a novel of overlapping short stories about the different women who have been affected by their disappearance. Each tale pushes the narrative forward another month and exposes the ways in which the women of Kamchatka have been destroyed — personally, culturally and emotionally — by the crime.

No Visible Bruises

By Rachel Louise Snyder

Snyder’s thoroughly reported book covers what the World Health Organization has called “a global health problem”. In America alone, more than half of all murdered women are killed by a current or former life partner; domestic violence cuts across lines of class, religion and race. Snyder reveals pervasive myths (restraining orders are the answer, abusers never change) and writes movingly about the lives (and deaths) of people on both sides of the equation. She doesn’t give easy answers but presents a wealth of information that is its own form of hope.

Midnight in Chernobyl

By Adam Higginbotham

Higginbotham’s superb account of the April 1986 explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant is one of those rare books about science and technology that read like a tension-filled thriller. Filled with vivid detail and sharply etched personalities, this narrative of astonishing incompetence moves from mistake to mistake, miscalculation to miscalculation, as it builds to the inevitable, history-changing disaster.

Exhalation

By Ted Chiang

Many of the nine deeply beautiful stories in this collection explore the material consequences of time travel. Reading them feels like sitting at dinner with a friend who explains scientific theory to you with no airs and graces. Each thoughtful, elegantly crafted story poses a philosophical question; Chiang arranges all nine into a conversation that comes full circle, after having travelled through remarkable areas.

1Which of the following tells about the violence from a husband to a wife in a family?

A.Disappearing EarthB.No Visible Bruises

C.Midnight in ChernobylD.Exhalation

2How may readers feel when reading the book Midnight in Chernobyl?
