Hearing the bell ring, I got up, quickly dressed me and ran onto the playground. A few minute later, more people came. They worked out for various ways. Some ran around the track. Some played basketball, tried to shoot baskets. A group of girls were walking on the balance beam in the turn. A couple of strongly-built boys made graceful movements on the flying rings. However, dozens of old men and women showed up, some of which did Taiji. At exact 6:30, music came for people to do exercise to radio music. For ten minutes all the people on the playground are seen bending down and straightening up, turning left and right. It’s really a beautiful sight look at!

1. me→ myself

2. minute→ minutes

3. for→ in

4. tried→ trying

5.去掉the

6. However→ Besides/Moreover

7. which→ whom

8. exact→ exactly

根據(jù)A few可知此處要用名詞的復(fù)數(shù)形式,A few minutes later過了一會(huì)兒。

故將for改為in。

故將However改為Besides/Moreover。

此處指代的人是上句的dozens of old men and women中的一些,表示人用代詞whom,而which常指事物。

故將are改為were

The Scottish National Portrait Gallery is one of Edinburgh’s most extraordinary buildings—a great red sandstone neo-gothic palace which sits proudly on the city’s skyline. Following a dramatic three-year redecoration, completed in December 2011, the Gallery now offers 17 new displays. Each of these explores different aspects of the story of Scotland and her people.

The Building

The Scottish National Portrait Gallery was designed by Sir Robert Rowand Anderson as a holy palace for Scotland’s heroes and heroines. This season, the bushfires in Australia have burned more than 12.35 million acres of land. At least 25 people have been killed and 2000 homes destroyed. According to the BBC, this is the most casualties(傷亡) from wildfires in the country since 2009. The University of Sydney estimates that 480 million animals have died in South Wales alone.

Zeke Hausfather, an energy systems analyst and climate researcher at Berkeley Earth, said warmer temperatures and extreme weather have made Australia more susceptible to fires and increased the length of the fire season. “The drier conditions combined with record high temperatures in 2019 created main conditions for the disastrous fires. Australia’s fires were worsened by the combination of those two. 2019 was the perfect storm for being the warmest year on record for Australia and the driest year on record for Australia,” Hausfather added on Friday.

Kevin Trenberth, a senior scientist at the US National Center for Atmospheric Research, said warmer ocean temperatures are also contributed to more variable weather around the world. Trenberth believes that global warming contributed to energy imbalances and hot spots in the oceans, which can create a wave in the atmosphere that locks weather patterns in places, causing longer rain events in Indonesia, for example, and at the same time contributing to drought in Australia. He said that once an area experiences drought conditions for two months or more, it increases the risk of fires catching and spreading. Those changing weather patterns due to global warming make drought events longer.

Climate experts stress that climate change is not the only factor in the severity of wildfires. How land is managed can also impact the amount of fuel available for fires. Practices like controlled burns and other factors can impact the risk to people and property, such as warning systems and the type of development in a given area. Changing those policies has great potential to limit future damage from wildfires along with changes to how fire management resources are dispatched(派遣).

1What do the numbers in paragraph 1 show?

A.The causes of Australian fires.

B.The results of Australian fires.

C.The damaged areas of Australian fires.

D.The property destruction of Australian fires.

2Which of the following best explains “more susceptible to” underlined in the second paragraph?

A.Quick to adapt to.B.Sure to cause.

C.Sensitive to.D.Easy to be protected from.

3What can we infer from Trenberth's research?

A.Global warming is the root cause of the bushfires.

B.Longer dry weather contributes to global warming.

C.Warmer ocean temperatures promote fires spreading.

D.The imbalanced energy leads to the temperature rising.

4What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?

A.To stress the effects of Australia fires.

B.To show the methods for controlling burns.

C.To predict the seriousness of Australia fires.

D.To provide some advice about reducing damage.

Asking for help is a sign of strength rather than weakness. In American culture, the independent individual is seen as their ideal. As the University of Missouri at St. Louis states on its website under the heading Key American Values, “Americans have been trained since very early in their lives to consider themselves as separate individuals who are responsible for their own situations in life and their own destinies.” The value also makes them think they can do everything themselves, and makes them feel bad about asking for help when they need it.

And when it comes to work situations, when they think about asking for help there, sometimes they fear that a request for help would make them look inept. While this has always been true for men, many women in the workplace have felt the need to try twice as hard as their male colleagues and do twice as much to get just as far and to prove their worth. Sometimes when we think about asking for help, our inner voices tell us, “See, if you admit you can’t do this on your own, they’ll see you for the imposter (騙子) you really are.”

But the fact is, even though individualism is on the rise, we can’t do everything by ourselves and we shouldn’t try.

Apple founder Steve Jobs once told the Santa Clara Valley Historical Association about the power of asking for help, and how he “never found anybody who didn’t want to help me when I asked them for help”. He said, at the age of 12, he called Bill Hewlett, co-founder of Hewlett-Packard, on the phone after getting his number from the phone book and asking him for spare parts so he could build a frequency counter(計(jì)頻器). And Hewlett agreed and offered young Jobs a summer job assembling frequency counters.

“If you’re afraid of failing, you won’t get very far,” Jobs said.

1What is the first paragraph mainly about?

A.What key American values are.B.Why Americans refuse to ask for help.

C.Asking for help is a sign of strength.D.Americans are responsible for their life.

2Which of the following can replace the underlined word “inept” in Paragraph 2?

A.impoliteB.depressedC.incompetentD.sensitive

3What can be learned from this US cultural phenomenon?

A.Americans suffer a lot from mutual distrust.

B.Americans see weakness as a sign of strength.

C.Americans should learn to build up confidence.

D.Americans think highly of individual values.

4What can we learn from Jobs’ words in the last paragraph?

A.Don’t hesitate to ask for help.B.Be brave to try whatever you want.

C.Never ask for help.D.Learn to cooperate with others.
