Metals usually occur (發(fā)生,出現(xiàn)) in nature as minerals(礦石). At present, about 80 different metals are known to man. But with so many metals to choose from the question arises: which metal shall we use? Is there any metal that is “best for everything”? Of course not. For example, iron is strong but it rusts easily, while gold, one of the first metals found by man, does not rust at all. Should we use gold, therefore, to build fences? Imagine the cost of a fence made of gold! It’s important to consider the cost and the supply (提供)of a metal. Also, when we choose a metal for a certain job, we examine its physical properties. Is it strong enough to be used as a support for a bridge? Can it he used in a telephone to conduct (傳導(dǎo)) electncity? Is it light enough to be used in an air plane wing? Can it he drawn out to make a fine wire? We also examine its chemical properties. Will it resist acid (酸) ? Is it too active to use? Is it easy to combine [ (使)結(jié)合] with other elements? Each use must be studied carefully. Then we can choose the right kind of metal, or combinations(結(jié)合)of metals.

The metals used for constructing buildings, cars, planes and ships must he strong and easy to form by casing, machining, and cutting. These metals are called structural(生銹)metals. The two most important structural (結(jié)構(gòu)的) metals are iron (steel) and aluminum. Aluminum, which is much lighter than iron, has made possible the modem aviation (航空) industry.

Very few of the metal things we use in industry and every day life are made of a single pure metal. Most of them are combinations of metals called alloys (合金). Alloys are formed when two or more metals are melted together and allowed to cool and harden. It has been known for a long time that when some metals are combined in this way, the alloy takes on new physical properties (性質(zhì)). The use of alloy makes it possible to manufacture (制造) many articles which must have special properties. Nowadays, if an inventor cannot find a metal that suits his purpose, he tries to have a new alloy made that will. The search for new alloys is going on all the time.

A Giant Leap for China

A few days ago, he was just Colonel(上校)Yang; few people knew his name or recognized his face. But last Thursday, when he came back to the earth after a 21-hour trip to space, Yang Liwei’s smile was seen across the world above the magic words:“China’s first spaceman”.

The 38-year-old astronaut was sent into space at 9 a. m.Last Wednesday by China’s Shenzhou Ⅴ spacecraft, which orbited the earth 14 times. He landed safely at 6∶23 a. m.The next day, making China the third country successfully send a person into space, after the former Soviet Union and the US.

Yang was satisfied with his job.“I have seen many landing scenes before on video, and I think ours was one of the most successful, ”He said on a special plane to Beijing after landing.Born into an ordinary family in Liaoning Province, he became a pilot in the Chinese Air Force in 1987, spending 1350 hours in the air.He joined the Chinese space programme 11 years later.

While in space, Yang recorded everything he saw as well as showing China’s national flag and the United Nations’ flag to the people watching on TV at home.He also ate a meal of diced chicken and fried rice, before taking a 3-hour nap.The whole project went according to plan, but space exploration is not as easy as it seems.

Anyone who saw the destruction of the US space shuttle Columbia in February this year will know that Yang took a great risk.

He experienced extremely high temperatures, while the gravitation(重力)on take-off and landing were strong enough to force tears from his eyes.

He has spent five years training to become a spaceman.

“I eat all of my meals at the space programme’s dinning room and have never been able to take my son to kindergarten, ”he said.“I’ve never met his teachers.”

But becoming China’s first spaceman has made all the effort worthwhile.

“When I boarded the spacecraft for the first time, I couldn’t help feeling excited,” he said.“I decided that I had to fly it.”

To Chinese people, Yang is now a hero. One visitor to a Xinhua news agency online forum(網(wǎng)上論壇)said, “Yang’s trip is a giant leap forward for China.”

Officials say the next Shenzhou will be launched by 2005.China also plans to develop spacewalking and a space lab.

That is why we use the phrase to describe some people who give you the same feeling. We have all met such people.

Then, there is the man sitting next to you at a lunch counter smoking a smelly cigar. He wants you to enjoy it too, and blows smoke across your food into your mouth.

We must not forget the man who comes into a bus or subway car and sits down next to you, just as closes you will let him.You are reading the newspaper and he leans over and stretches his neck so that he can read the paper with you.He may even turn the paper to the next page before you are ready for it.

We’ve all met with something that slows us down, for example, the bumps(顛簸)in the road, the setbacks. You just have to keep in mind that a setback is only temporary and greater things lie ahead. Therefore, keep moving forward, developing what you have, since you’ve already built a solid foundation on which you can rely.

It is easy just to quit, give up and ignore the hard work you have put into something. But we believe in the “two steps forward, one step back” philosophy. So how can you react when something doesn’t turn out as you’ve expected it to be?

First, be objective.Step back and look at the situation. Is your setback really that significant, or will it just require a little extra effort? Then, plan your next move. You can ask for help.Don’t be afraid or ashamed to do this.Frequently, people are more than willing to give you support and advice. You don’t have to be perfect; after all, nobody else is.Next, bounce back.Reevaluate the goals you should have set for yourself at the beginning and retool(改組)them when necessary.Goals should be realistic and specific, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be flexible.Instead of looking at your project as a disaster or failure, view it with success.Concentrate on how great it will feel after it is finally done, after you have put your all into it.Instead of focusing on a possible unsatisfactory performance one single time, take a moment to sit back and reward yourself for all that you have accomplished.

Above all, don’t live with regrets.Success is never easy.It remains up to you whether you will give up, or fight through the tough battles to earn whatever you want.Keep reaching for your goals and you will achieve them. One small setback is nothing if you really want something and are willing to work for it.

(1)

According to the passage, the philosophy “two steps forward, one step back” means that _________when meeting with a setback.

we should stop to think before taking further action

D.

Our house was directly across the street from the clinic entrance of John Hopkins Hospital in BaltimoreWe lived downstairs and rented the upstairs rooms to out-patients at the clinic

One summer evening as I was fixing supper, there was a knock at the doorI opened it to see a truly awful looking manno taller than my eight-year-old sonI thought as I stared at the shriveled(皺縮的)bodyBut the shocking thing was his facetwisted from swelling

He told me he'd been hunting for a room since noon but with no success"I guess it's my face, but my doctor says with a few more treatments…”

I told him we would find him a bedWhen I had finished the dishes, he told me he fished for a living to support his daughter, her five children, and her husband, who was hopelessly disabled from a back injuryHe didn't tell it by way of complaint; in fact, every other sentence began with a thanks to God for a blessingHe was grateful that no pain accompanied his disease, which was apparently a form of skin cancer
