What must you do when you receive a present of your birthday? You have to sit down and write a thank-you note. The words "Thank you" are very important. We have to use them on so many occasions. We say them when someone gives us a drink, helps up to pick up things, hand us a letter, lends us a book or gives us a lift.

Another important word is "Please". Many people forget to use it. It's rude to ask someone to do something without saying "Please".  We have to use it when we ask for something, too. It may be a book or a pencil, more rice or more soup, help or advice. It may be in the classroom, at home, at the bus-stop or the counter. We have to use "Please" to make request pleasant.

We have to learn to say "sorry" too. When we have hurt someone's feelings, we'll have to go up and say we're sorry. When we have told a lie and feel sorry, we will have to use the same word. When we have forgotten something or broken a promise, we will have to explain with that word, too. "sorry" is a healing (和解的)word. We can make people forget wrongs by using it sincerely.

There three words are simple but important. Man had to use them long ago. We have to use them now. Our children will have to use them again. They are pleasing words to use in any language.

What is language for? Some people seem to think it’s for practising grammar rules and learning lists of words-the longer the lists, the better. That’s wrong.Language is for the Exchange(交流)of ideas and information. It’s meaningless knowing all about a language if you can’t use it freely. Many students I have met know hundreds of grammar rules, but they can’t speak correctly or fluently(流利地).They are afraid of making mistakes. One shouldn’t be afraid of making mistakes when speaking a foreign language.Native speakers make mistakes and break rules, too.Bernard Shaw once wrote, “Foreigners often speak English too correctly.”But the mistakes that native speakers make are different from those that Chinese students make. They’re English mistakes in the English language. And if enough native speakers break a rule, it is no longer a rule. What used to be wrong becomes right.People not only make history, they make language. But a people can only make its own language. It can’t make another people’s language. So Chinese students of English should pay attention to grammar, but they shouldn’t overdo(做過頭)it.They should put communication(交際)first.

What happens to old school buses when they can no longer safely carry kids to school? Most go to waste factories to be changed into pieces of metal. But a few of the old vehicles (車輛) find new lives in the center of Africa. Most of those buses end up on the streets of Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Kinshasa buses are that yellow color, which makes them stand out (突出) in the city’s heavy traffic, but the buses don’t look at all as they did in the United States. In Kinshasa their taillights(尾燈) are almost all missing or broken. They don’t obey traffic rules and often race around the city very fast. The buses compete with motorcycles, cars, trucks, and other vehicles for space on the road. They make loud sounds when moving, and they are packed with people carrying loads of goods, such as fish, milk, beans and onions.

However, Kinshasa business people love the old, yellow buses, which they buy from American companies, because the vehicles are strong, reliable (可依靠的) and inexpensive. A used bus sells for about $2,000 in Congo. A new bus is more expensive. In the United States, a new school bus with all its lights working costs about $80,000.

The fare (票價) to travel across the city is usually about 30 US cents. “Transport is a big problem in Kinshasa,” says passenger Bruce Kingambo. “But the yellow buses help people here get around.”

56.The underlined sentence in the first paragraph means “In the center of Africa some old US     school buses can be_________.”

A.useful                     B.expensive                C.free                        D.new

57.Before the school buses leave America for Congo, they_________

A.have broken taillights

B.don’t obey the traffic rules and move at full speed

C.carry many people and goods

D.don’t compete with other vehicles

58.How many used buses can you buy in Congo for the price of a completely new school bus     in the USA?

A.10.                         B.20.                         C.30.                         D.40.

59.The passage mainly tells us _________

A.how to use old school buses

B.a(chǎn)bout new lives for old school buses

C.to try to take old school buses

D.how to drive old school buses

What would you think if I told you I could eat 40 percent more food than other people-eating boxes
of ice cream, bowls of noodles and plates of meat-all while losing weight?
You might hate me, thinking I have one of those annoyingly good metabolisms(新陳代謝)that just
burn up fat the instant it enters my body. You might wonder if I have an intestinal(腸的)worm, or
perhaps an eating disorder. Or maybe you'd just shrug your shoulders and figure I have a rich fantasy
life.
     You'd be wrong.
For my body to finish such a surprising task, I would have to be a mouse. Not just any mouse, but
one lucky enough to be involved in a new study at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
After identifying an enzyme(酶)that allows fat to be stored in the body, scientists fed mice without
those enzymes, and found those mice were able to consume far more food than other mice-and still
weigh 10 to 15 percent less.
Best of all, the mice that had no enzymes were in very good health, producing baby mice with no
problem and generally acting like any other mouse. That's great news for obesity researchers, who think
that scientists may figure out a way to prevent the fat metabolizing(脂肪代謝)enzyme in humans and
control weight gain. And such a pill would be very exciting for many people who are struggling to get rid
of dangerous extra pounds.
But don't start planning any big dinner just yet. At this point, of course, any pill for humans is but a
twinkle(閃爍) in the eye of every medicine company's CEO. More tests are to be made, and eventually
humans will be introduced in the test.
But for now, unfortunately, control in diet is still the key.
1. What does "such a surprising task" in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Eating a lot of food while losing weight.
B. Burning up fat very quickly.
C. Controlling the diet.
D. Having a rich fantasy life.
2. Why did the author say he/she had to be a mouse in Paragraph 4?
A. Because a mouse can lose weight no matter how much it eats.
B. Because the weight losing tests were made on the mouse.
C. Because the mouse has a very good metabolism.
D. Because the author wants to try the food without the enzyme.
3. In the experiment, the mice without those enzymes________.
A. were in good condition
B. put on weight
C. became weak
D. could not have baby mice
4. What does the author want to show through the last two paragraphs?
A. You can be free of guilt when having big dinners.
B. Scientists cannot find the key to identifying the enzyme.
C. Don't overeat before the test is made on humans.
D. It is unnecessary to control weight at present.
