【題目】During a period of global economic depression, financial disturbance and trade protectionism, a country would face a battle to solve these issues alone. There is no denying that in the current situation, competition between countries is emphasized more than cooperation in that neither country would like to lose out to the other countries.

The Hangzhou G20 summit, in which heads of state and government and central bankers get together to exchange views with each other, aims to create an “open innovation” environment, which means to promote innovation not only within a single country, but by virtue of cooperation with other countries, to deal with common problems facing all of humanity.

“China has already become a big player in the international arena(競(jìng)技場(chǎng)). However, China alone cannot wrestle with all the problems,” said Atsushi Sunami, vice president at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies. “Being the second largest economy in the world, China needs to join forces with other nations to solve these existing problems, in relation to the environment, education, energy, clean water and climate change.”

【答案】The Hangzhou G20 summit places much emphasis on global cooperation rather than competition. It seeks to cope with the current issues in various fields, which can’t be resolved by a single country. (32words)

It is apparent that cooperation is a necessity for success in such a competitive society. First and foremost, teamwork can help us achieve shared targets in a more efficient way. Furthermore, cooperation provides people with opportunities, learning to show respect for others. Those who lack such essential skills are certain to be wiped out of the team in modern society. (60words)

The success our Chinese women's volleyball players achieved in the 2016 Rio Olympics is a striking example of the point. While we weren’t on the winning side at first, we strived as a team to the last minute of the match. Without team spirit, we wouldn’t have won the championship. It is cooperation that really counts in addressing problems we face. (61words)

【題目】When I was six, Dad brought home a dog one day, who was called “Brownie” My brothers and I all loved Brownie and did different things with her. One of us would walk her, another would feed her, then there were baths, playing catch and many other games, Brownie in return, loved each and every one of us. One thing that most touched my heart was that she would go to whoever was sick and just be with them and we always felt better when she was around.

One day, as I was getting her food, she chewed up (咬破) one of Dad’s shoes, which had to be thrown away in the end. I knew Dad would be mad and I had to let her know what she did was wrong. When I looked at her and said, “Bad girl,” she looked down at the ground and then went and hid. I saw a tear in her eyes.

Brownie turned out to be more than just our family pet, she went everywhere with us. People would stop and ask if they could pet her. Of course she’d let anyone pet her. She was just the most lovable dog. There were many times when we’d be out walking and a small child would come over and pull up her hair, she never barked (吠) or tried to get away. Funny thing is she would smile. This frightened people because they thought she was showing her teeth. Far from the truth, she loved everyone.

Now many years have passed since Brownie died of old age. I still miss days when she was with us.

【題目】根據(jù)短文理解,選擇正確答案。
In the early 1980s, one of our neighbors asked my mom if she would make a few gift baskets for her [來(lái)源:]to give as gifts for the holidays. My mom agreed and news of the unique gift baskets my mum was making spread like wildfire throughout the neighborhood. My mum was busy throughout the holiday season, so she asked a friend to help her. When the orders continued after the holiday season for baby gifts, birthday gifts and more, it occurred to them that maybe this job could be turned into a business and they did it.
My mum went into her business because she had a creative idea. She got orders and filled orders. But there was no purpose and no real strategy(策略). In 1991, my mum' s partner got into financial trouble and there was not enough money to support either my mum or her partner.
So if you are led by your creativity or enthusiasm, make sure you ask yourself what you want out of your business. If you don't set goals, how will you know what direction to go in? Do you want to create jobs and growth in the economy? Are you looking for a hobby? You can't keep scores if you don' t know what game you are playing.
After my mom's partner gave up, she had to abandon(拋棄) her business to support herself. She swore(發(fā)誓)she would run a business again and do it differently the next time. However, there wasn't a "next time" for her. She passed away just after her 51st birthday. She never had someone tell her how important having a goal was. She never had an opportunity to be everything that she could be.
There are no right or wrong goals, only the ones that matter to you. Set them so that you can make progress and achieve success, whatever that may mean to you.

【題目】Exposed soil isn’t part of nature’s master plan. Good examples where soil is naturally found with no plants growing in are beneath freshly removed trees, or where the ground has been burnt by a land fire. In these situations bare soil isn’t bare for long; within days seedlings (芽) begin to appear and cover the ground. In a few months’ time, the scar is hardly noticeable.

Unlike these natural examples, ploughed (耕犁) fields and freshly dug gardens are obvious examples created by man. But, left to nature, even these bare soils soon turn green with a large number of tiny seedlings. In fields, gardens and on grasslands, roadside and sports fields, along streets and on paths and pavements, we are constantly battling to stop weeds from growing. All we are doing is stop the recovering powers of nature.

Whenever soil is exposed, weeds act like a kind of medicine to reduce the potentially harmful rays of the sun, so the sooner plant growth covers the soil over again, the better.

Weeds also help to improve the fertility (肥沃) of the soil. Their roots get the soil together, improving its structure and creating a more stable environment in which soil life can grow fast. Those weeds with a deep root draw up plant nutrients from deeper in the ground, making them available to plants growing near the soil surface. Above ground, the stems (莖) of weeds help trap fallen leaves which break down into the soil, adding to the fertility of the soil.

As the soil becomes more fertile, different kinds of plants start to replace the “pioneering” weeds. Bushes move in to take the place by gradually shading them out, followed in turn by trees, which eventually push up through the bushes, finally shading them out too. Fallen leaves from the bushes and trees carry on the job of building soil fertility that was begun by those very first weeds that grew on the bare soil. Then, when one of these mature trees is removed in a storm, leaving a wound of bare soil in the earth, the whole process starts again.

1When will soil be left bare?

A. A land fire has just happened. B. A young tree is planted in.

C. No one ploughs the land. D. No crops are planted in.

2Which of the following prevents the bare soil from recovering?

A. Seedlings appearing in gardens.

B. Reducing harmful rays of the sun.

C. Removing weeds from pavements.

D. Replacing plants in sports fields.

3What can weeds do for the soil?

A. They create soil life.

B. They help improve the soil.

C. They get nutrients from the sun.

D. They break down fallen leaves.

4How can the soil remain fertile after trees move in?

A. By adding more weeds to the soil.

B. By taking out the weeds constantly.

C. By removing the previous bushes.

D. By making use of the fallen leaves.

【題目】“How do you account for your remarkable achievements in life?”Queen Victoria of the UK asked Helen Keller. “How do you explain the fact that even though you were both blind and deaf, you were able to achieve so much?”

Ms.Keller's answer is a tribute(致敬)to her kind teacher.“If it had not been for Anne Sullivan, the name of Helen Keller would have remained unknown.”

According to speaker Zig Ziglar,Annie Sullivan was no stranger to hardship. She was almost sightless herself and was,at one time, diagnosed as hopelessly “insane” by her caregivers. She was locked in the basement of a mental institution.Occasionally,Annie would violently attack anyone who came near. Most of the time she generally ignored everyone in her presence.

An elderly nurse believed there was hope, however, and she made it her work to show love to the child.Every day she visited Annie, and she left cookies for her and spoke words of love and encouragement. She believed Annie could recover,if only she were shown love.

Eventually, doctors noticed the change in the girl.Where they once witnessed anger and hate, they naw noted a gentleness and love. They moved her upstairs where she continued to improve. Then the day finally came when this seemingly “hopeless” child was released.

Anne Sullivan grew into a young woman with a desire to help others as she, herself, was helped by the kind nurse. It was she who saw the great potential in Helen Keller. She loved her, disciplined(約束)her, played with her, pushed her and worked with her until the flickering candle that was her life became a beacon(燈塔)of light to the world.Anne Sullivan worked wonders in Helen's life;but in was a loving nurse who first believed in Little Annie and lovingly transformed an uncommunicative child into a kind teacher.
