In some countries, open campus (校園) is widely accepted. For example, French students have a two-hour lunch break from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. During their lunch break, they can eat at home or at a restaurant. But students in the Philippines have a tougher schedule. They have only two 15-minute breaks and an hour for lunch.

What Schedule would be best for American schools?

Having breaks between classes is great, but having breaks off campus is even better. There are several advantages to open campus, including simple conveniences such as being able to eat different meals during lunchtime, rather than having the cafeteria (自助食堂) dishes, as well as having the chance to take a break at home.

However, there are more reasons I disagree with allowing high school students the right to have an open campus. Sure, it’s great being able to escape school during the day for a while, but soon enough that may easily become the rest of the day.

If open campus is allowed, it is very possible that such freedom will make it all too easy for students to skip their afternoon classes. Of course, there will be students responsible enough to come back to school.

But unexpected problems such as heavy traffic, city bus delays (延遲) or cars breaking down may prevent them from returning to school. It benefits the students to stay in school during lunch hours to avoid transportation issues.

Depending on how close the school is to restaurants and students’ homes, open campus could be a great idea. Unfortunately, though, most public schools in America are not located close enough to restaurants or students’ homes, thus causing the negative results to outweigh (超過) the positives in the end.

【1】Compared with French students, students in the Philippines .

A.have a poor diet B.get better grades

C.have less freedom D.prefer eating on campus

【2】In the author’s opinion, open campus will probably .

A.lead to heavy traffic

B.cause students to cut school

C.a(chǎn)ttract more students to school

A.They have a two-hour lunch break.

B.They allow students to eat outside.

C.They plan to have open campus.

D.They are far from students’ homes.

But students in the Philippines have a tougher schedule. They have only two 15-minute breaks and an hour for lunch.

Sure, it’s great being able to escape school during the day for a while, but soon enough that may easily become the rest of the day. If open campus is allowed, it is very possible that such freedom will make it all too easy for students to skip their afternoon classes.

Unfortunately, though, most public schools in America are not located close enough to restaurants or students’ homes, thus causing the negative results to outweigh (超過) the positives in the end.

Of the several films Hirokazu has made about childhood and children, this one is the most modest, but no less pleasing for its delicate style and small setting. This wise and funny film works small miracles in describing such a moment when kids turn from the wishfulness of childhood into shaping the world for themselves.

The sweetly reflective hero, a sixth-grader named Koichi, starts out by wishing for a volcano to erupt. Not just any volcano, but the one that towers above his town, smoking heavily and giving off ash. An eruption would lead to a withdrawing, which would lead, at least in his mind, to a reunion with his father and kid brother, who’ve been living in Hakata while Koichi lives with his mother and retired grandparents in Kagoshima. The volcano, knowing nothing of this, refuses to erupt, but Koichi hears of another approach to realizing the desired miracle.

One of the pleasures of I Wish is watching how kids behave — how Koichi attacks his dinner, for example. Another pleasure is rediscovering how kids think. These kids can be logical and ever so tricky. But children’s thought processes can also be fancy. A boy wishes he could play baseball like one of baseball stars, who eats curry for breakfast; so he, too, starts eating curry for breakfast, instead of practicing on the field. Another boy tries to wish his dead dog, Marble, back to life. And what does Koichi finally wish for? I wish you’d see this delightful film to find out.

【1】 Koichi wishes the volcano to erupt so that he can ______.

A. enjoy the wonderful scene of a volcano

B. help those who suffer from the eruption

C. get together with his family members

D. work miracles during the disaster

【2】Which of the following statements is true of the film?

A. It is set in a volcano eruption.

B. It is a serious science fiction movie.

C. It shows some dull and ridiculous behaviors.

D. It shows a lively and thoughtful world of children.

【3】What does the writer intend to do in this text?

A. To recommend a film.

B. To make a review on a film.

C. To share pleasures of watching a film.

D. To discuss kids’ behavior and thoughts.

Lights Out at Bedtime

There are plenty of good reasons to power up a personal desktop or laptop computer in the evening writing e-mails, chatting on social networks or making purchases over the Internet, for instance. But various studies indicate that people who stare at a PC’s bright monitor shortly before going to bed probably sleep less soundly than they would otherwise because the light seriously affects their natural wake-sleep cycle."They haven't proved it though," says Dieter Kunz, the team's director at Charite's Psychiatric Clinic in St.Hedwig's Hospital in Berlin.

Similarly, exposure to just 10 minutes of normal bathroom lighting is enough to free the sleep hormone melatonin, which regulates people's natural wake-sleep cycle and makes them sleepy at nightfall.

Ten years ago, a team of British and American researchers detected a photo-pigment(光敏色素) in the human eye that signals to the body whether it is day or night, summer or winter. The photo-pigment is especially sensitive to blue light.

"The blue light more or less tells the body, It's daytime, be awake," Kunz says. Monitors have a mostly cold white light content and scientists suspect the photo-pigment may react similarly to it. So the longer people look into the bright light, the more awake they become and then sleep poorly.

A lot of people have difficulty "switching off" in the evening. About half of the women in Germany and a quarter of the men sleep poorly.

Environmental factors are only one of the possible causes. Job stress as well as personal and health concerns are also the main reasons for their sleep problems.

In addition, electronic objects' standby lights and indicator lamps can be annoying in the dark and affect sleep."Sound scientific evidence is still lacking on this matter," Kunz notes.

According to Kunz, those who cannot go without their computer in the evening should turn down the blue content if possible and lower the brightness somewhat."But nobody does that because, after all, you want to concentrate while working at the computer and the light helps the brain."

Real-life Room Escape Games

Real-life room escape games are a type of physical adventure game in which people are locked in a room with other participants and have to use the things in the room to settle a series of puzzles, find clues, and escape the room within a set time limit.

The games are based off Escape the Room video games, such as Crimson Room and QP-Shot, created by TAKAGISM Inc. by Toshimitsu Takagi in 2005, in which the player is locked inside a room and must explore his or her surroundings in order to escape. 【1 Other inspirations include adventure board games and movies. Real-life room escape games are becoming popular in the United States, Japan, and China. 2 For example, some games require you escape prison cells while others require you escape space stations.

3 Soon, they were exported to North America, Asia and Australia. Examples include the two pioneer companies Hint Hunt and Adventure Rooms.

The games were so successful that new locations began opening up across China, in cities big and small, according to Want China Times. In the southern city of Shenzhen, for example, the first escape game location opened last August. 4 “These real-life escape games can help those who stay at home on their computers and iPads all day to experience real social circles,” Tian Xiaochuan, who owns two room escape game stores in Jinan, told Want China Times.

Earlier this year, The South China Morning Post said the real-life esape games are a hit among “highly stressed students and overworked young professionals.” 5 Some players get so involved that they tear down equipment or decorations inside their “prisons”, as Zhu Yumeng, chief operating officer of Beijing room escape game store Taoquan told China Daily.

A. Each game adds local themes to settings.

B. And seven new game locations quickly followed.

C. They should also be brave enough to face their fears.

D. Sometimes the excitement becomes a bit much, though.

E. Weekend or day event escape games have been held in some stores.

F. Permanent real life escape games in a fixed location were first opened in Europe.

G. Players must be observant and use their critical thinking skills to escape the room.
