【題目】For over one hundred and fifty years, Americans of all social classes have worn blue jeans. Since they were invented by Levi Strauss, they have become a symbol of American consumer culture. Whether they are worn for work or for fashion today, Strauss’ invention continues to be popular not only among Americans but also among people around the world.

Levi Strauss was born in Germany in 1829.1 He grew up in Kentucky before moving to New York in 1847. Before becoming an American citizen and moving to the West in 1853, Strauss worked in his brother’s dry goods business. This gave him a chance to produce his famous invention. After the gold rush of 1849, Strauss decided to move to the West to seek his fortune.

Strauss did not want to be a person who searched an area for minerals. Instead, he knew he could make a good living by selling supplies to the miners. At first, he planned to sell sewing supplies and cloth.2When he heard miners complaining that their clothes were easily broken or they usually tore their pockets during mining, he decided to use a special fabric to make pants for the miners. These pants proved so popular that he quickly ran out of materials to make more.

In 1873, Strauss received a letter from a Jewish tailor named Jacob Davis who had invented a process of connecting pockets with copper rivets(鉚釘). This made the pants last a long time. Because Davis did not have the money to patent his idea, he offered to share it with Strauss if Strauss would agree to pay for the patent.3

By the time Strauss died in 1902, he had made a great contribution to American fashion.

He also made a great contribution to America's clothing industry. The business has been growing ever since and Levi Strauss' company is now one of the largest clothing companies in the world.

A.As a young boy, he moved with his family to the United States.

B. Nobody knew what kind of material was suitable.

C. He did and Levi jeans have been made with metal rivets ever since.

D. However, he did not get much business for those products.

E. As the business grew, Strauss got much money from it.

B
Animals can be extremely protective of their young. But when hard times call, animal fathers can be really a danger to their own kids.
Daddy Lion
A combination of laziness, pride, cruelty and anger makes the lion one of the most fearsome and worst dads of the animal kingdom. When not walking proudly across the jungle, the father lion just lazes around under the sun, or waits for one of its lioness(母獅子) partners to bring back food. Once the lioness gets home the food, the lion eats up most of it, and leaves little or nothing at all for the kids. The father doesn't even train the kids for hunting and surviving, it is the lioness who teaches them how to fend for themselves.
The Polar Father
Cute, pure and soft. Protective of young ones and family? Sure. But what makes the polar bears one of the worst dads of the animal kingdom? They don't take care of the young ones, they won't take up the responsibility of feeding them, they won't take care of them like a father should. They just leave that to the mother bear.
The Assassin Bug(獵蝽)
Size matters, you say? This little bug would eat its own eggs to stay strong and fulfill its hunger needs. The male assassin bug is actually responsible for guarding the eggs. The female assassin bug lays eggs in large numbers. The male bug eats the weaker eggs.
Daddy Bass(巖鱸魚)
Usually, water calms you down. Not so much for this underwater species. The male bass is known to eat up eggs from its own spawn. It guards the spawn(子,卵) laid by its female partner. However, when hungry and unable to hunt for food, the father won't think twice before eating up the eggs.
And do you think your father was strict and hard? After reading this article, I'm sure you think your dad is the best in the whole wide world for not eating you up!

With the development of modern technology, there are a plenty of ways for us to contact people. WeChat is probably our favorite, mainly because of its convenient. We can keep in contact with friends whenever it is and wherever we are as long as Wi-Fi is available. Another advantage is it is a relative cheap and quick way of communication. As messages get send and received instantly, the cost of making phone calls is cut down. Besides, music as well as pictures and videos are often downloaded through WeChat, but it is now a useful entertainment tool. However, problems exist at the meanwhile. For example, your identity can be easily revealed, so we should pay attention to protect our personal information.

【題目】Once when I was facing a decision that involved high risk, I went to a friend. He looked at me for a moment, and then wrote a sentence containing the best advice I’ve ever had: Be bold and brave — and mighty forces will come to your aid.

Those words made me see clearly that when I had fallen short in the past, it was seldom because I had tried and failed. It was usually because I had let fear of failure stop me from trying at all. On the other hand, whenever I had plunged into deep water, forced by courage or circumstance, I had always been able to swim until I got my feet on the ground again.

Boldness means a decision to bite off more than you can eat. And there is nothing mysterious about the mighty forces. They are potential powers we possess: energy, skill, sound judgment, creative ideas — even physical strength greater than most of us realize.

Admittedly, those mighty forces are spiritual ones. But they are more important than physical ones. A college classmate of mine, Tim, was an excellent football player, even though he weighed much less than the average player. “In one game I suddenly found myself confronting a huge player, who had nothing but me between him and our goal line,” said Tim. “I was so frightened that I closed my eyes and desperately threw myself at that guy like a bullet — and stopped him cold.”

Boldness — a willingness to extend yourself to the extreme—is not one that can be acquired overnight. But it can be taught to children and developed in adults. Confidence builds up. Surely, there will be setbacks (挫折) and disappointments in life; boldness in itself is no guarantee of success. But the person who tries to do something and fails is a lot better off than the person who tries to do nothing and succeeds.

So, always try to live a little bit beyond your abilities—and you’ll find your abilities are greater than you ever dreamed.

1Why was the author sometimes unable to reach his goal in the past?

A. He faced huge risks.

B. He lacked mighty forces.

C. Fear prevented him from trying.

D. Failure blocked his way to success.

2What is the implied meaning of the underlined part?

A. Swallow more than you can digest.

B. Act slightly above your abilities.

C. Develop more mysterious powers.

D. Learn to make creative decisions.

3What can be learned from Paragraph 5?

A. Confidence grows more rapidly in adults.

B. Trying without success is meaningless.

C. Repeated failure creates a better life.

D. Boldness can be gained little by little.

4What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?

A. To encourage people to be courageous.

B. To advise people to build up physical power.

C. To tell people the ways to guarantee success.

D. To recommend people to develop more abilities.

【題目】七選五
Nail-biting(咬指甲) is one of the most common annoying habits in children. But you needn't worry too much and as soon as you realize what's causing nail-biting, you can help your child overcome and stop it. So, here's what you can do about it.
In some cases, children won't even realize they are biting their nails, let alone know why they are doing it. So make sure you have a conversation with your child (if he/she is old enough) and make him/her realize he/she is doing it and try to figure out why it's happening. It's important to agree on the level of your involvement. If he/she wants help, create a secret reminder that will make him/her stop without embarrassing him/her.
Give alternatives (替代物). Depending on the age of the child, there are several things that you can offer such as a small ball, Play-Doh games, or any kind of other small toys.
Use bitter solutions(溶液). Forcing a child to keep this solution on his/her fingers may feel like a punishment. Everything else will only lead to embarrassment and discouragement. Furthermore, some of these solutions contain pepper which burns if it enters a child's mouth or eyes. But if you have an adolescent child who wants to quit biting his/her nails, you may suggest and try out this solution.
A.It's also likely to continue as the child grows up.
B.Help the child become aware of the habit.
C.You should also consider asking for professional help.
D.Make an agreement on how you're going to stop it together.
E.The best thing children can do is communicate with their parents.
F.The child needs to go through the process painlessly and in agreement with you.
G.That will keep his/her hands occupied when he/she is likely to bite his/her nails.

【題目】閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項。
D
It is natural that young people are often uncomfortable when they are with their parents. They say that their parents don't understand them. They often think that their parents are out of touch with modern ways, that they are too serious and too strict with their children, and that they seldom give their children a free hand.
It is true that parents often find it difficult to win their children's trust and they tend(傾向) to forget how they themselves felt when young.
For example, young people like to act on the spot without much thinking. It is one of their ways to show that they have grown up and they can face any difficult situation. Old people worry more easily. Most of them plan things in advance, at least in the back of their minds, and do not like their plans to be upset by something unexpected.
When you want your parents to let you do something, you will have better success if you ask before you really start doing it.
Young people often make their parents angry with their choices in clothes, in entertainment and in music. But they do not mean to cause any trouble; it is just that they feel cut off from the older people's world, into which they have not yet been accepted. That's why young people want to make a new culture of their own, and if their parents don't like their music or entertainment or clothes or their way of speech, this will make the young people extremely happy.
Sometimes you are so proud of yourself that you do not want your parents to say “yes” to what you do. All you want is to be left alone and do what you like. It is natural enough, after being a child for so many years, when you were completely under your parents’ control.
If you prefer to control your life, you'd better win your parents over and try to get them to understand you. If your parents see that you have a high sense of responsibility, they will certainly give you the right to do what you want to do.
(1)According to the text, young people prefer to __________.
A.ask for advice before they really start to do anything
B.think in the same way as their parents do
C.be very strict with themselves
D.do things without thinking carefully ahead
(2)Why do young people like to have clothes, entertainment and music in their way?
A.Because they want to try on something new and look different from the older.
B.Because they try to get their parents to be proud of them.
C.Because they want to give their parents a big surprise.
D.Because they want to test whether they are cleverer than old people.
(3)According to the text, young people want to make a new culture of their own, because _________.
A.they feel they are cleverer than old people
B.they do not want to get into trouble with their parents
C.they don’t feel they belong to the world of the old people
D.they want to show the new is better than the old
(4)If a young man intends to control his own life, it's better for him to __________.
A.do everything according to his own wish
B.hold himself responsible for everything he does
C.do everything beyond his parents' control
D.do everything the way his parents do
