【答案】Dear Leslie,

I’m glad to share with you what I’ m doing in the epidemic situation.

Since the outbreak of COVID- 19 in Wuhan in December, 2019, I have been staying at home. On the one hand, I pay close attention to the epidemic situation through watching CCTV news or surfing the Internet; on the other hand I insist on studying. Not only do I read classics, but also I have online courses given by my teachers. Besides, I take exercise every day to keep healthy. Faced with the disaster, many people including doctors, nurses and scientists act bravely and spare no effort to fight against it. They are real heroes.

Thank you for your concern. I’ m looking forward to your reply.

Yours,

Li Hua

For starters, what about a tour of tropical crops in the Botanical Gardens- tastes and smells included? You can follow that up with a course of lectures and tastings of Italian food and wine given by the finest Italian delicatessen(熟食) in the country. Well, it is all in Edinburgh, but room is unavailable here to list the entire programme: including the daily diary and A map of venues. It covers 20 pages! There is also a host of specialist conferences on a range of topics including statistics, computing and urban planning. The programme of the festival is well arranged and subdivided, making it easy to pick out interesting events to suit your tastes, whatever they may be. Venues and the target audience (children, adults or specialists)are all clearly coded and the maps posted along the road should make it easy to get around.

【題目】 At the office that day, Martha was left to keep her eyes open until after the lunch hour. Then Mr Max Cohen brought her a document to copy. She was so anxious she had to start afresh three times. And when he came to fetch it, all that had been achieved were the words “Memorandum of an Agreement of Sale” typed across the top of the sheet. She shrank under his impatient assurance that it did not matter in the least, and she must take her time. Her fingers were heavy and trembling, and her head was thick. To type two pages of his small neat writing into something clean and pleasant to look at seemed to her, just then, an impossibly difficult task. He went home without coming to her desk again, and she decided she would come early next morning and do it before anyone else arrived.

Mrs Buss, on her way out, asked, “Have you got any certificates?” Martha said no. She had learned to type at home. Mrs Buss said nothing, but merely nodded absent-mindedly, for her eyes were on the elegant Mrs Jasper Cohen. Martha could barely see where she was going as she left the office. What she said to herself was, “I won’t spend the rest of my life typing this stupid jargon”.

She then went into the building of the ZambesiNews. She was going to see if Mr Spur, an old journalist whom she had known as a child, could offer her any kind of position. She was in the building about half an hour, and when she came out, her face was hot with embarrassment. It had been so painful she could not bear to remember what had happened. What she must remember was that she had no qualifications at all.

1Why did Martha find her first day at the office difficult?

A.She was too nervous to think.B.Mr Cohen was not easy to please.

C.The task given to her was very difficult.D.She was not used to working under pressure.

2By the end of the day, which of the following was true of Martha?

A.She had decided to work overtime.B.She hadn't finished her typing work.

C.She hadn't thought she would be blamed.D.She knew Mr Cohen was disappointed in her.

3What might be Mrs Buss's attitude towards Martha?

A.She seemed eager to help her.

B.She seemed uninterested in her.

C.She seemed to have taken a dislike to her.

D.She seemed concerned about her lack of qualifications.

【題目】The Buy Nothing Movement

Social media, magazines and shop windows bombard(猛轟)people daily with things to buy, and British consumers are buying more clothes than ever before. The average person spends more than 1,000 on new clothes a year, which might not sound like much. 1 A lot of consumer spending is by means of credit cards. British people currently owe about 670 per adult to credit card companies. Also, people are spending money they haven't earned to buy things they don't need. Britain throws away 300,000 tons of clothing a year, most of which goes into landfill(垃圾填 埋地)sites.

2But charity shops can't sell all those unwanted clothes. A lot of clothes that charities can't sell are sent abroad, causing even more economic and environmental problems.

3The idea originated in Canada in the early 1990s and then moved to the US. On Buy Nothing Day people organise various types of protests and cut up their credit cards. Throughout the year, Buy Nothing groups organise the exchange and repair of items they already own.

The trend has now reached influencers on social media who now encourage their viewers not to buy anything at all for periods as long as a year. Two friends in Canada spent a year working towards buying only food. For the first three months they learned how to live without buying electrical goods, clothes or things for the house. For the next stage, they gave up services, for example, haircuts, eating out or buying petrol for their cars. 4

The changes they made meant two fewer cars on the roads, a reduction in plastic and paper packaging and a positive impact on the environment from all the energy saved. 5But even if you can't manage a full year without going shopping, you can participate in the anti-consumerist movement by refusing to buy things you don't need.

A.In one year, they'd saved $55,000.

B.If everyone followed a similar plan, the results would be impressive.

C.Online shopping means it is easy for customers to buy without thinking.

D.Second-hand clothes are often of too poor quality to recycle in charity shops.

E.But that figure hides two far more worrying trends for society and for the environment

F.However, a different trend arises in opposition to consumerism—the ' buy nothing' trend.

G.People might not realise the problems because they donate their unwanted clothes to charities.
