Li Hua

【答案】

Dear Editor,

With the final examination approaching, many parents try to encourage their children to study hard and be admitted into a famous university in the near future. They promise that they will be rewarded with things such as money, traveling and so on once they achieve the goals.

However, I don't think this is a proper way. Firstly, it may lead to the fact that children's attention will focus on such things instead of the pleasure of studying. Secondly, they may stop working hard as soon as they get what they want.

I think a wise way is to make us aware of the importance of going to a good university. We should also study hard and well for our future.

Yours truly

Li Hua

With the final examination approaching,這里使用了with的復合結構;it may lead to the fact that children's attention will focus on such things instead of the pleasure of studying.這里面包含了一個同位語從句。另外,范文還恰當地運用了過渡詞語,這些都是值得學習的亮點。

What I Think of Boxing as a Sport

Boxing is a popular sport. Newspapers, magazines and sports programmes on TV frequently cover boxing matches. It could be the toughest of all sports to survive. It takes boxers hours in the gym and years to develop the specific characteristics needed to be a great boxer.____【1】____

It seems to me that some people, especially men, find it appealing because it is an aggressive sport. When they watch a boxing match, they can identify with the winning boxer. This gives them the feeling of being a winner themselves.____【2】____ They do that because the boxer comes from their own country, and if “their” boxer loses, they often feel as if they have lost a fight themselves. It is a fact that many people have feelings of aggression from time to time, but they cannot show their aggression in their everyday lives.Watching a boxing match gives them a way of expressing it.

____【3】____ Although boxers wear gloves during the fights, and amateur boxers even have to wear helmets, a kind of strong hard hat, there have frequently been accidents in both professional and amateur boxing, sometimes with dramatic consequences.Boxers have suffered from head injuries, and, occasionally, fighters have even been killed as a result of being knocked out in the ring.___【4】____ They are usually in the form of serious brain damage, even if a boxer has never been knocked out.

To conclude, I am personally not at all in favor of aggressive sports like boxing.____【5】___ We can celebrate more men and women from non-aggressive sports as our heroes in our society.I believe that the world is aggressive enough already! Of course, people like competitive sports, and so do I, but I think that hitting other people in an aggressive way is not something that should be regarded as a sport.

A.However, boxing can be a very dangerous sport.

B.Sometimes fans are rooting for a particular boxer.

C.In boxing, fighters are required to hit a moving target.

D.Many fans are drawn to the sport because they love the competition.

E.Perhaps that is the reason why successful boxers are treated as big heroes.

F.I think it would be better if less time was given to aggressive sports on TV.

G.Besides, studies have shown that there are often long-term effects of boxing.

The morning had been a disaster. My tooth was aching. And I’d been in an argument with a friend. Her words still hurt: “The trouble with you is that you won’t put yourself in my place. Can’t you see things from my point of view?” I shook my head stubbornly—and felt the ache in my tooth.I’d thought I could hold out till my dentist came back from holiday, but the pain was really unbearable.I started calling the dentists in the phone book, but no one could see me immediately. Finally,at about lunchtime,I got lucky.

When I told her my fears, she laughed and said,"Don't worry. The dentist is very good."

"How long do I have to wait for him?" I asked impatiently.

"Come on,he is coming.Just lie down and relax. And enjoy the artwork," the assistant said.

"The artwork?" I was puzzled.

The chair went back.Suddenly I smiled. There was a beautiful picture, right where I could enjoy it: on the ceiling. How considerate the dentist was! At that moment,I began to understand what my friend meant by her words.

Tea drinking was common in China for nearly one thousand years before anyone in Europe had ever heard about tea.People in Britain were much slower in finding out what tea was like, mainly because tea was very expensive. It could not be bought in shops and even those people who could afford to have it sent from Holland did so only because it was a fashionable curiosity. Some of them were not sure how to use it.They thought it was a vegetable and tried cooking the leaves. Then they served them mixed with butter and salt. They soon discovered their mistake but many people used to spread the used tea leaves on bread and give them to their children as sandwiches.

Tea remained scarce and very expensive in England until the ships of the East India Company began to bring it direct from China early in the seventeenth century.During the next few years so much tea came into the country that the price fell and many people could afford to buy it.

At the same time people on the Continent were becoming more and more fond of tea.Until then tea had been drunk without milk in it, but one day a famous French lady named Madame de Sevigne decided to see what tea tasted like when milk was added. She found it so pleasant that she would never again drink it without milk.Because she was such a great lady that her friends thought they must copy everything she did, they also drank their tea with milk in it.Slowly this habit spread until it reached England and today only very few Britons drink tea without milk.

At first, tea was usually drunk after dinner in the evening. No one ever thought of drinking tea in the afternoon until a duchess(公爵夫人)found that a cup of tea and a piece of cake at three or four o’clock stopped her getting “a sinking feeling” as she called it.She invited her friends to have this new meal with her and so, tea-time was born

【題目】Five years ago, David Smith wore an expensive suit to work every day. "I was a clothes addict," he jokes. "I used to carry a fresh suit to work with me so I could change if my clothes got wrinkled." Today David wears casual clothes-khaki pants and sports shirt-to the office. He hardly ever wears necktie. "I'm working harder than ever," David says, "and I need to feel comfortable."

More and more companies are allowing their office workers to wear casual clothes to work in the United States. The change from formal to casual office wear has been gradual. In the early 1990s, many companies allowed their employees to wear casual clothes on Friday (but only on Friday). This became known as "dress-down Friday" or "casual Friday." "What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for employees has really become an everyday thing," said business consultant Maisly Jones.

Why have so many companies started allowing their employees to wear casual clothes? One reason is that it's easier for a company to attract new employees if it has a casual dress code. "A lot of young people don't want to dress up for work," says the owner of a software company, "so it's hard to hire people if you have a conservative dress code." Another reason is that people seem happier and more productive when they are wearing comfortable clothes. In a study conducted by Levi Strauss and Company, 85 percent of employers said that they believe that casual dress improves employee morale. Only 4 percent of employers said that casual dress has a negative impact on productive. Supporters of casual office wear also argue that a casual dress code helps them save money. "Suits are expensive, if you have to wear one every day," one person said.

"For the same amount of money, you can buy a lot more casual clothes."

【1】David Smith refers to himself as having been "a clothes addict" because _____.

A. he often wore khaki pants and a sports shirt

B. he couldn't stand a clean appearance

C. he wanted his clothes to look neat all the time

D. he didn't want to spend much money on clothes

【2】David Smith wears casual clothes now, because _____.

A. they make him feel at ease when working

B. he cannot afford to buy expensive clothes

C. he looks handsome in casual clothes

D. he no longer works for any company

【3】In this passage, the following advantages of casual office wear are mentioned EXCEPT _____.

A. saving employees' money

B. making employees more attractive

C. improving employees' motivation

D. making employees happier
