In a great many cities, hundreds of people ride bicycles to work everyday. In New City, some bike riders have even formed a group called Bike for a Better City. They declare that if more people rode bicycles to work, there would be fewer automobiles(汽車) in the downtown part of the city and so less dirty air from car engines. For several years this group has been trying to get the city government to help bicycle riders. For example. They want the city to draw special lanes(通道) for bicycles only on some of the main streets, because when bicycle riders must use the same lanes as cars, there are accidents. Bike for a Better city feels that if there were special lanes more people would use bikes.

But no bicycles lanes have been drawn. Not everyone thinks they are a good idea-----they say it will slow traffic. Some store owners on the main streets don't like the idea------they say that if there is less traffic, they will have less business.

The city government has not yet decided what to do. It wants to keep everyone happy. On weekends, Central Park----the largest place of open ground in New York----is closed to cars, and the roads may be used by bicycles only. But Bike for a Better City says that this is not enough and keeps fighting to get bicycle lanes downtown.

1. The bike riders suggest that _____________.

A. bicycles should be used instead of cars    B. bicycle lanes should be drawn

C. fewer buses or cars should be used       D. the number of special lanes should be increased

2. The advantage(好處) of the special lanes is that _______.

A. they will make cars and buses run slowly

B. they will make it easier for bike riders to go to parks

C .they will make the city more beautiful

D. the lanes will prevent accidents

3. The government has not decided whether special lanes should be drawn ______.

A. so that everyone is disappointed      B. because there are different opinions

C. because most people travel by train   D. because Bike for a Better City is not strong enough

The United States will introduce a new and comprehensive (綜合的) exam for students who seek to study in America and other English-speaking countries, Xin Hua News Agency(新華社) reported from New York.

The exam, which stands for a great change from the current English level test, was disclosed by Theresa Chang-whei Jen, associate director of the International Service of the US College Board, America's leading educational organization.

The Advanced Placement International English Language ( APIEL) will be offered for the first time throughout the world on May 10, 2002, said Jen.

However, the APIEL is a strange title to most Chinese students, and it is unlikely to soon gain the similar popularity of other already existing exams, such as the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign language) , the GRE (Graduate Record Examination ), or the IELTS (International English Language Testing System).

“I have never heard of such a test and I would prefer the IELTS if I need another exam,”said Xu Jingyan, a graduating student from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (北京航天航空大學(xué)), who wants to study in England and has already taken the TOEFL.

Most of Xu's classmates have never heard of the APIEL.“The APIEL is designed for international students who wish to get university studies in English-speaking countries, including the United States, Britain, Canada, and Australia.”said Jen.

The APIEL has been adopted, said Jen, because the TOEFL can no longer accurately (準(zhǔn)確地) reflect the abilities of students to use the English language comprehensively in an academic environment. Xin Hua reported that a fairly large number of foreign students who earned high scores in TOEFL exam turned out to be very ordinary educational performers after admission(錄取).

Compared with the TOEFL, the APIEL, measures a student's ability to read, write, speak and understand English through testing his or her skills in listening comprehension, speaking with accuracy (精確) and resourcefulness (機(jī)智), and writing with clarity (明晰) and fluency (流暢), Jen said.

For most Chinese university students, the US is a favorite destination for further education. But apart from obstacles such as the GRE and TOEFL exams, choosing a good graduate school is no easy task.

Admission is very competitive for international students, so it is important to apply to a number of institutions to have a reasonable chance of acceptance.

Since the application to most universities requires a certain fee, Chinese students usually choose seven to seventeen universities according to their own financial circumstances.

Wang Yuwei, a Zhejiang University graduate, sent applications to 15 US universities.

When the 24-year-old began looking for a US graduate school in her senior year, she took time to compare the various schools and find the ones most suiting her needs. Now, studying at the University of Washington, she knows that her hard work paid off.

“To broaden your chances, at least one third of the applications should be to less selective schools,”said Wang.“Applicants shouldn’t limit their choices to the most famous institutions.”

Furthermore, one shouldn’t rely too much on college rankings such as the Gorman Report or US News & World Report’s annual league tables.

The right school is the one that best meets your own personal needs and interests, rather than someone else’s assessment of an institution’s prestige(聲望).

“Usually choices are based on one’s personal interests and academic background, but it is important to make sure that your chosen subject is satisfied,”said Wang.

has the best location

B.

C.

To go abroad for further education, you must pass the GRE or TOTEL.

D.

To get a better chance to go abroad, you’d better apply to a less selective school.

(3)

In the passage the writer uses the example of Wang Yuwei to show ________.

[ ]

A.

you must spend a lot of time comparing the various schools

B.

it isn’t worthwhile to spend time looking for the right university

C.

it is necessary to find the suitable university that meets your personal interests

D.

one’s own financial circumstances are worth considering

(4)

What will be continued after this passage?

[ ]

A.

How hard Chinese students studied in America.
