The Dai ethnic group, with a population of 1,060,000, has a long history. Most Dai people live in Yunnan. They have their own languages/dialects, but many of them understand Chinese. The people rely on farming, main crops being rice and beans. Rice is their staple food, and most Dai people have a taste for insects.

Their houses are usually built near water so that they can often have baths, due to their love of cleanliness. They are good at singing and dancing. The Water Splashing Festival is their most important festival. When the festival comes, people splash water on each other, expressing good wishes.
