Tales of the supernatural are common in all parts of Britain. In particular, there was (and perhaps still is) a belief in fairies(仙女). Not all of these   1   are the friendly, people-loving characters that appear in Disney films, and in some folktales they are   2   and cause much human suffering. This is true in the tales about the Changeling. These tell the story of a mother whose baby grows   3   and pale and has changed so much that it is almost   4   to the parents. It was then   5   that the fairies had come and stolen the baby away and   6   the human baby with a fairy Changeling. There were many ways to prevent this from happening: hanging a knife over the baby’s head while he slept or covering him with some of his father’s clothes were just two of the recommended   7  . However, hope was not lost even if the baby had been   8  . In those cases there was often a way to get the   9   baby back. You could   10

Electric ears are dirty. In fact, not only are they dirty, they might even be more dirty than their gasoline-powered cousins.

People in California love to talk about "zero-emissions vehicles", but people in California seem to be clueless about where electricity comes from. Power plants mostly use fire to make it. Aside from the new folks who have their roofs covered with solar cells, we get our electricity from generators. Generators are fueled by something---usually coal, oil,but also by heat generated in nuclear power plants. There are a few wind farms and geothermal plants as well, but by far we get electricity mainly by burning something.

In other words, those "zero-emissions" cars are likely coal-burning cars. It's just because the coal is burned somewhere else that it looks clean. It is not. It's as if the California Greens are. covering their eyes---"If I can't see it, it's not happening." Gasoline is an incredibly efficient way to power a vehicle; a gallon of gas has a lot of energy in it.But when you take that gas (or another fuel) and first use it to make electricity, you waste a nice part of that energy, mostly in the form of wasted heat---at the generator, through the transmission lines, etc.

A gallon of gas may propel your car 25 miles. But the electricity you get from that gallon of gas won't get you nearly as far---so electric cars bum more fuel than gas-powered ones. If our electricity came mostly from nukes; or geothermal,or hydro, or solar, or wind, then an electric car truly would be clean. But for political, technical, and economic reasons,we don't use much of those energy sources.

In addition, electric cars' batteries which are poisonous for a long time will eventually end up in a landfill. And finally, When cars are the polluters, the pollution is spread across all the roads. When it's a power plant, though, all the junk is in one place. Nature is very good at cleaning up when things are too concentrated, but it takes a lot longer when all the garbage is in one spot.

What does "clueless" mean in paragraph 2?

    A. People are seeing the California Greens everywhere.

    B. People in California love to talk about zero-emissions vehicles.

    C. People in California love to have their roofs covered with solar cells.

D. People there have no idea that so far electricity mainly comes from burning

   coal, oil,etc.

What is the main idea of the passage?

    A. Electric cars are not clean at all

    B. Electric cars are better than gasoline-powered ones.

    C. People cast doubts on electric cars' batteries.

    D. Gasoline is an efficient way to powera vehicle.

The electricity we get from a gallon of gas may make our ear run

    A. not less than 25 miles            B. more than 25 miles

    C. no more than 25 miles             D. not more than 25 miles

According to the passage, electric cars                  .

    A. do not burn fuel and more environmentally-friendly

B. are toxic because it is difficult for nature to clean it up when their

batteries are buried in one spot.

    C. are very good at cleaning up when things are not too concentrated

    D. are poisonous for a long time and will eventually end up in a landfill

It can be inferred from the passage that

    A. being green is good and should be encouraged in communication

B. electric cars are not clean in that we get electricity mainly by burning

   something

    C. zero-emissions vehicles should be chosen to protect our environment

D. electric cars are now the dominant vehicle compared with gasoline-powered

   cousins

Long long ago people made fires from lightning(閃電)。 But they had to keep the fire burning, for they couldn’t start it again if there was no lightning. Later, they found out hitting two piece of stone together could make a spark (火花). The spark could fire dry leaves. In this way they could make the fire again if it went out. Them people also learned to make a fire by rubbing. They made a hole on a big piece of wood and put a smaller stick into the hole. They turned the stick again and again. After a few minutes they got a fire.

As years went by, people learned other ways to make a fire. Sometimes they used the heat from sun. they held a piece of glass in the right way and made a piece of paper on fire.

About two centuries ago, people began to make matches (火柴). Matches brought people a quick and easy way to make fire. Today matches are still being used, but people have more new ways to make fires. Many Americans have been leaving their cars at home and riding to work on bicycles. Andy Clark is the leader of the League of American Bicyclists. His group supports bicycling for fun, fitness and transportation.

Clark says this is good news for the environment. He says riding a bicycle to work does not burn fossil fuel or creates dangerous pollutions. Experts say the effects are the most important on short trips. The Department of Transportation says fifty percent of Americans drive eight kilometers or fewer to work. Shorter car trips set out more pollution into the air for each kilometer drive. This is because the car engine will set out the harmful air when it warms up before it can work well.

James, a members of Congress (國會(huì)), is a strong supporter of bicycle use. He says cities, counties, state governments and state highway transportation agencies are planning the roadways of the future. They are creating roads and paths for bicycles in cities and between communities.

Last year, Portland, the Pacific Northwest city in the state of Oregon, had the highest percentage of bicycle users in the United States. Portland has been doing progressive city planning for many years to create special paths for bike riders.

1. What happened in America now according to the news?

A.Many Americans lost jobs now.

B.Many Americans prefer short trips.

C.There are more and more bicyclists now in America.

D.The pollution is getting worse and worse in America.

A. One  of the cities in the USA.    B. One of the counties in the USA.

C. One of the states in the USA.    D. A country in the northwest of the USA.
