My cousin and I usually stay out late with some friends on Saturday evenings, left Grandpa alone at home. It was so cold yesterday, however, that none of us wanted to suffer from the frozen wind outside. So after dinner we stay at home sitting around a fire and listening to Grandpa tell his experiences in Second World War. In fact they sounded familiar to us, so we were still listening attentively so as to make him be happy. Now and then we asked Grandpa some questions, that he answered in a humorous way. We burst into laughing from time to time and he laughed too. Full of joy, we all felt especially warm in the cold evening.

【答案】1. left-leaving

2. none-neither

3. froze-freezing

4. stay-stayed

5. in 后面加the .

6. so-but/yet

7. be去掉

8. that-which

9. into – out

10. in- on

the Second World War意為第二次世界大戰(zhàn)”。

“that he answered in a humorous way”是非限制性定語從句,修飾some questions,引導詞在從句中做answer的賓語,故用關系代詞which引導該從句。

第九處:考查固定短語。句意:我們時不時地哈哈大笑。burst into后面加名詞。burst out后面接doing,故應將into改為out。

第十處:考查介詞句意:在這個寒冷的夜晚,我們感到特別的溫暖。evening, morning前由形容詞修飾,表示特定的某個晚上或早晨時,前面用介詞on。故將in改為on。

【題目】When I was in the fifth grade and Mr. Gardner asked a question, my hand would often shoot up in enthusiasm. After giving me a few opportunities, he would try to give other students a chance. My hand, though, would remain in the air, and after some time, I’d start waving it around. Then, there was the time I entered drumming classes. But all we were allowed to do in the first class was practice one beat over and over again. I never went back.

I would have done terribly in theStanford Marshmallow(果漿軟糖) Experiment. In this classic study, researchers gave children a choice between one marshmallow right away and two later. The results showed that those who could wait 15 minutes ended up scoring 210 points higher on the SAT, an examination that American high school students take before they go to college.

So clearly, delaying(延遲的) gratification or bearing up under pain have their benefits. It needs patience, which keeps us from being stuck to ideas formed previously, and helps us let go of our strong desire for consequences. We come to accept that we don’t always or immediately know what is best, and learn to recognize that our reality is in constant changes. Patience improves our understanding of deeper truths and helps us expand our views.

The journey of patience is rooted in knowing that our present reality will finally give way to changes. But changes won’t always happen when we think they should, and patience with ourselves comes from accepting that there are things we can control and things we can’t. And though we must make great efforts to keep pushing the boundaries of our awareness and to improve our ability to rest in comfort in the present moment, how fast we develop isn’t up to us.

That same fifth grader who couldn’t wait to speak out answers now sees the value of meeting questions with a heart of patience.

1Why did the author wave his hand around in class?

A. He wanted to entertain himself.

B. He tried to show his impatience.

2What’s the purpose of the Stanford Marshmallow Experiment?

A. To test children’s concentration levels.

B. To test whether children have sweet teeth.

C. To test patience and its potential advantages.

D. To test the bond between patience and desire.

3Which of the following can replace the underlined word “gratification” in Para. 3?

A. Progress. B. Patience.

C. Assistance. D. Satisfaction.

4What is the main reason for people to have patience according to the text?

A. Constant changes. B. Present reality.

C. An absence of self-control. D. A strong desire for consequences.

【題目】The Children’s Book-Show Competition is a chance for young readers to be writers.

Reading, it seems, is coming back in fashion, if a survey by the famous National Literacy Trust (the NLT) is true. It shows that the percentage of children who admit enjoying reading has grown for the first time in the past 8 years.

So it’s a good time to launch a competition that includes a shed-load of new books for schools as prizes. The Children’s Book-show Competition, backed by The Independent, is taking to the roads again from the start of next term, with a nation-wide tour of 15 big cities, featuring a line-up of a dozen children’s writers and illustrators (插圖畫家) aiming to persuade pupils to follow their footsteps.

The competition, launched by the children’s writer and illustrator Jessica Souhami, has two categories: the under-nine’s and nine to 13-year-olds.

Children are asked to choose their favorite fairy or folk tale and set it in an extraordinary place.

Then they are to retell it with the aid of drawings and writings—whether it is set at sea, on a distant planet, in the future or in the past. The closing date for the competition is 30th November.

“Tell your tale in pictures and in words, ”say the organizers of the competition. “It can be in a picture book or comic-book format.”

The winner of each competition will receive a signed copy of a book by each of the 12 authors involved in this year’s tour, plus 150 worth of books for their school. The runners-up will receive a signed copy of Souhami’s new book.

1What can we know about the Book-show Competition?

A. It will be held by the famous NLT. B. It will be held in different cities.

C. It has never been organized before. D. Children of all ages will join in it.

2The underlined word “backed” in Paragraph 3 means ________.

A. started B. promoted

C. supported D. reported

3Which of the following sentences is TRUE?

A. The survey by the NLT is definitely true.

B. The winner of each competition will receive a signed copy of Souhami’s new book.

C. 12 children’s writers and illustrators are involved in this year’s tour.

D. The survey by the NLT shows that the number of children who enjoy reading is much larger than before.

4The author’s purpose of writing this passage is to ________.

A. encourage young readers to become writers

B. persuade all children to join in the competition

C. promote children’s books by famous writers

D. introduce the Children’s Book-Show Competition
