People think being an artist must be a wonderful way to earn ones living. And of course, there are lots of great things about working for oneself, at home alone, even in a cold studio like mine. What I really like is that nobody tells me what time to start in the morning. I like to paint as soon as I wake up, which is always early, but isnt the same time every day. And nobody tells me what to wear or whether I can take the afternoon off and go to a football match.

But then, I have no one to chat with when Im bored, no one to discuss last nights match with during the office lunch hour. Sure, I can spend the afternoon doing something I enjoy like cycling or gardening if I choose. But the work will still be there when I do finally get back home.

Unfortunately, working at home means that people can always find me, whether Im bored or not, and once Ive answered the doorbell, its too late my thoughts have been interrupted. No one would dream of calling in if I worked in an office, but I find myself listening to friendstroubles. As they talk, my ideas disappear and I feel increasingly stressed thinking of my work waiting to be done.

However, when I hear the traffic news on the radio, and imagine my friends sitting miserably in their cars in a jam, feeling bored, or waiting unhappily for an overcrowded train in the rain, I realize that I really havent got much to complain about. I find a CD which will start me thinking, turn it up really loudly and begin another picture.

1In the passage the writer is trying to ________.

A. encourage readers to work at home

B. explain why he decides to be an artist

C. describe his working life

B. He can do things without being told by others.

D. He has a comfortable place to work in.

3The writer plays loud music because ________.

A. the traffic outside is noisy

B. it helps him to have ideas

C. it prevents him from feeling bored

D. he doesnt want to hear the doorbell

4Which of these notices would be the most useful for the writer to put on his door?

A. Im working please dont disturb.

B. Please knock before entering.

C. Im listening to music join me.

D. Come in and have a chat.

34、5What I really like is that nobody tells me what time to start in the morning. I like to paint as soon as I wake up, which is always early, but isnt the same time every day. And nobody tells me what to wear or whether I can take the afternoon off and go to a football match.可知作者喜歡自己的自由職業(yè)的原因在于沒有人約束自己,不必由別人告訴自己該做什么,該怎么做。故B正確。

3B 推理題。根據(jù)文章最后一句I find a CD which will start me thinking, turn it up really loudly and begin another picture.可知我大聲地播放一個(gè)CD,這個(gè)CD能夠讓我開始思考。故B正確。

4A 推理題。根據(jù)第三段1、2Unfortunately, working at home means that people can always find me, whether Im bored or not, and once Ive answered the doorbell, its too late my thoughts have been interrupted.可知朋友們都知道我在家里工作,所以經(jīng)常會(huì)來看我,向我抱怨各種問題。而我的工作也被他們打斷了。所以對(duì)作者來說最不愿意的事情就是工作時(shí)被打擾。故A項(xiàng):Im working please dont disturb.很適合。故A正確。

Here are tips for a successful speech from a professional speechwriter:

No speech should last more than 20 minutes. 【1】 The Sermon on the Mount, a collection of sayings and teachings of Jesus, for example, lasted hardly more than three minutes.

Focus on one topic. We’re human and tend to have lots of thoughts, opinions and ideas. You have to make proper selection. 2 Include and expand only those that explain and support your viewpoint(觀點(diǎn)).

3 It’s important to remember that your words must be hearable and understandable the first time out.

Humour is vital. 4 Ronald Reagan always wanted to joke at the start of a speech because he needed the quick victory of laughter. It helped him relax. It also helped the audience relax.

Don’t forget to say thanks. You should always, at the beginning of the speech, thank the person who invited you and introduced you. 5 While you’re doing it, the audience gets a chance to daydream and settle down. They’re going to daydream at some point anyway, and it may as well be before you get to the heart of your remarks.

A. Choose your words carefully.

B. And saying thanks at the beginning has a practical purpose.

C. First you have to work out what you’re going to say.

D. Every speech needs it, and you need it, too, probably at the beginning.

E. Stick to one subject-the future of the soccer club, for example.

F. This process takes time, so start once you begin thinking about the speech.

G. The more important the message is, the less time it requires to say it.

【題目】Growing up, I wanted to be just like my mom. She was kind. People always seemed to feel comfortable in her presence. For years, she was a volunteer in our community. I loved going to the local nursing home with her where she taught a ceramic (陶藝)class.

On one summer day, Mama told me to get changed and meet her at the car. I had planned to spend the day at the lake with friends. Why did she have to ruin everything? I imagined the cool lake water. Annoyed, I climbed into the car and slammed(砰然關(guān)上) the door closed. We sat in silence. I was too upset to make conversation.

“Tasha, would you like to know where we are going?” Mama asked calmly.

“No,” I said.

“We are going to volunteer at a children’s shelter today. I have been there before and I think it would benefit you,” she explained.

When we reached the shelter, Mama rang the doorbell. Moments later, we were greeted by a woman. She led us to the front room where all of the children were playing. I noticed a baby whose body was scarred with iron marks. I was told it was because she wouldn’t stop crying. Most of the children had obvious physical scars (疤痕). Others hid their emotional wounds.

As I took in the place, I felt a gentle pull on my shirt. I looked down to see a little girl looking up at me. “Hi. You want to play dolls with me?” she asked. I looked over at Mama for reinforcement. She smiled and nodded. I turned back and said, “Sure.” Her small hand reached up and held mine, as if to comfort me.

My mom taught me a valuable lesson that summer. I returned to the shelter with her several times. During those visits, some of the children shared their troubled pasts with me and I learned to be grateful for what I had. Today as I struggle to instill (逐漸灌輸) these values in my own child, I reflect back to that experience. It was a time that I will never forget.

A.were once treated badly

B.weren’t allowed to go outside

C.were often punished by staff

D.a(chǎn)ll suffered from mental illness

4The underlined word “reinforcement” in the passage is closest in meaning to “________”.

A.upset B.command C.comfort D.support

5What lesson did the author learn from her experience?

A.To value what you have.

B.To play with children is fun.

C.To love others is to love yourself.

D.To do as what your parents do.

【題目】The trouble with school is that you can’t choose the people you get to see every day. If you’re unlucky enough to be stuck with classmates who don’t really “get” you, you’ve just got to try to make the best of it.

But that doesn’t mean you need to “fit in”, or at least in the way that people think. If you try to transform yourself into a clone of everyone else, it won’t help you make friends. It’ll just make you feel like a fake.

You also shouldn’t shut down or refuse to be friends with everyone who doesn’t like you. If you do that, you’ll just make yourself miserable. Instead, you’ve got to work on being comfortable and confident with whom you are while ignoring all the haters. Keep on speaking up, asking questions and getting to know people better. If you send out positive energy, then people will generally send some back to you. A couple of them will stay the same, and you’re allowed to forget about them.

If you feel like you’re doing all that but still not getting anywhere, then don’t give up. Just expand your circle. Get a part-time job at a cool-looking place, join an after-school art class or youth group—do whatever it takes to find a couple of like-minded people to connect with. Even if you don’t find anyone right away, you’ll still be getting some more social experiences under your belt, and that’s always a good thing.

A fun book called Uncool, by Erin Elisabeth Conley, has some tips for people like you who want to stay positive at school while being true to your personality:

·Throw caution to the wind.

·Don’t bear others’ mistakes.

·Have patience with people who are different from you.

·Don’t change just because someone else thinks you should.

·Know that even though you may be a misfit, there’s always some place where you will be welcomed in the world.

【1】According to the author, what should you do if you meet people who don’t appreciate you?

A. Just give up.

B. Ask someone else for help.

C. Show positive attitude toward them.

D. Try your best to fit in with them.

【2】The author agrees that you should take part in more activities in order to __________.

A. get more chances of making friends

B. lay a better foundation for your future jobs

C. transform yourself into a clone.

D. make you feel like a fake.

【3】In the book Uncool, Erin Elisabeth Conley thinks you should _________.

A. always be kind to your friends

B. keep your own personality

C. bear others’ mistakes

D. help improve characters of others
