It’s certain that the following tale is a nice example that can teach us a good lesson. One day, a young man  36 begged from door to door along the street.  37  an old wallet in hand, he was asking for a few coins to buy something to eat. He kept complaining about his bad 38  and kept wondering why those who had so much money were never   39  and were always desiring more.
“As for me, if I had only enough to eat and to wear, I would not want anything more."
Just at that moment Goddess Fortune  40  the beggar among the crowd and approached him, greeting, “Hi, young man, I have wished to   41  you for a long time. “I see. Now I’m ready. ” said the beggar with confidence.
“Then you should   44 ! It’s obvious that your wallet is a/an   45 one, so don’t load it too heavily,” said the Goddess Fortune.
The excited beggar could hardly   46 to have gold. He quickly opened his wallet, and a   47  of yellow coins was poured into it. The wallet became heavier and heavier.
“Is that enough? Isn’t it cracking? Will your wallet strong enough for more?” warned the Goddess.
“Never  48 .It’s still strong enough now” replied the beggar firmly.
The wallet was filled with so many coins that the beggar’s hands began to   49 . “Ah, if only the golden stream would   50  forever! Just a little more,” said the beggar, “  51  just a handful or two.”
“There! It’s full. The wallet will   52 .” warned the Goddess again, but the beggar insisted, “ I know it will  53  a little more, just a little more.”
One more piece was added and the wallet split. The   54  fell upon the ground and became dust. The greedy beggar had now   55  but his broken wallet.

“In our time,” Marx once wrote, “change is upon the world and cannot be stopped as we wish. The thing now is to understand it.” Marx devoted his life to understanding that change.
Born in Trier in 1818, he came from a rich, middle—class family. Many of his relatives believed in Judaism, but his father had changed to believe in Protestantism(新教) in order to become a lawyer. After studying at the universities of Bonn and Berlin, Marx became interested in politics in his early twenties and in 1848 wrote The Communist Manifesto, together with his life-long friend Friedrich Engels.
Revolution broke out throughout Europe in 1848 and Marx was forced to leave Germany when it failed in 1849. He moved to London, where he spent the rest of his life, working in the British Museum.
His stay in the house in Dean Street in Soho was a time of great hardship for Marx and his family. He was surviving almost on the money provided by Engels and on the very little money he earned as the foreign reporter for a newspaper in New York.
Three of his six children died during the time in Soho and, Marx even had to borrow money in order to bury one of them. Only when Marx’s wife Jenny got 120 pounds after her mother died was the family able to move out of Soho and into a slightly better house in Kentish Town.
Marx died on March 14th ,1883, and was buried in Highgate Cemetery in north London.

The surprising experiment I am about to describe proves that air is all aroud you and that it proves down upon you.Air pressure is a wonderful force. When you swim underwater, you can feel water push down your body. The air all around you does the same. However, your body is so used to it that you do not notice this .The pressure is caused by a layer of air called the atmosphere. This layer surrounds the Earth , extending to about five kilometers above the Earth’s surface.
The following experiment is an easy one that you can do at home. But make sure that you are supervised , because you will need to use matches. Now for the experiment!
What you need
·A hard-boiled egg without the shell
·A bottle with a neck slightly smaller than the egg
·A piece of paper
·A match
Metheod
1) Check that the egg will sit firmly on the neck of the bottle.
2) Tear the paper into strips and put the strips into the bottle.
3) Light the paper by dropping a burning match into the bottle.
4) Quickly sit the egg on the neck of the bottle.
Result
Astonishingly, the egg will be sucked into the bottle.Your friends will be amazed when you show them the experiment. But be careful when you handle matches.
Why it happened
As the paper burns,it needs oxyen and uses up the oxygen(air) in the bottle. The egg acts as a seal in the neck of the bottle,so no more air can get inside .This reduces the air pressure inside the bottle. The air pressure must equalize,so more air from outside must enter the bottle. The outside air pressure against the egg and then the egg is pushed into the bottle! The proves that air is all around and that it is pressing down on it.
53.When you do the experiment, why need you a person beside you?
A.You couldn’t place the egg on the bottle by yourself.
B.The egg needs to be shelled.
C.You need to use matches.
D.The bottle can’t sit firmly on the desk.
54.The purpose of doing this experiment is to prove ______.
A.a(chǎn)ir pressure is a wonderful force
B.water can push down your body when you swim underwater
C.the air pressure is not equalized around us
D.the earth is surrounded by a layer of air called the atmosphere
55.How did the egg put into the bottle?
A.The oxygen inside the bottle suckde the egg in.
B.It became solt without the shell.
C.The neck of the bottle was wide enough.
D.The outside air pressure forced it into the bottle.
56.The passage is ______.
A.a(chǎn)n experiment report            B.a(chǎn) scientific story
C.a(chǎn) research report                 D.a(chǎn)n interesting novel

E
Many cities in the world are benefiting from the nocturnal (夜間活動(dòng)的) activities of a group of people who call themselves guerrilla (游擊隊(duì)的) gardeners. Armed with trowels, spades and a van full of flowers and plants, guerrilla gardeners turn abandoned urban land into a blaze of color. In city centre locations where there was mud, weeds and empty plastic bottles, residents often wake up to find that the wasted area has been transformed overnight with brightly-colored bedding plants.
In most British cities, local governments and police turn a blind eye to the exploits (開(kāi)發(fā)) of the gardeners, whose activities are always carried out under cover of nightfall. And so far, there has been nothing but praise from the astonished and delighted local residents when they find their neighborhood transformed in such a striking fashion.
Not only do the guerrilla gardeners beautify neglected places, they also return regularly to water the plants and weed the flower beds. They also make sure that at least some of the plants they bring are evergreens, which means that the area doesn’t look dismal (凄涼的) in the winter months.
The first guerrilla gardener in London was Richard Reynolds, whose day job is at an advertising agency. Mr Reynolds, a graduate of Oxford University, began his efforts two years ago when he moved to a flat in a tower block in South London. From his balcony, he could see several empty concrete pots, placed by the local governments to contain plants but never used. He went out after midnight and filled the pots with plants, and then planted more flowers in the path leading to the entrance to the block.
He then set up a website to explain his plan and called upon more gardeners to join him. Cash donations flooded in and, more importantly, volunteers rushed to be part of the campaign. Within six months, there were five hundred people in London prepared to come out at very short notice to revitalize (恢復(fù)活力) neglected parts of the urban landscape. There are now unofficial but carefully-organized groups in many cities in Britain and North America and there is also a website where would-be urban gardeners can find out the location of the next expedition.
76. According to the text, guerrilla gardeners got their names ______.
A. because of the residents’ advice                    B. from the local governments
C. for the nature of their work                         D. based on the local cultures
77. These guerrilla gardeners do their work ______.
A. at the request of the government                  B. nearby their house
C. often in return for others’ help                      D. of their own free will
78. Why do the guerrilla gardeners often return to their former working places?
A. To look after these plants.                            B. To enjoy these beautiful flowers.
C. To help plants live through winter months.    D. To change the types of these plants.
79. Richard Reynolds decided to fill the pots with plants with the purpose of ______.
A. making the neighborhood more beautiful      B. agreeing with his own job
C. advertising some products in his agency      D. killing his spare time
80. It can be inferred from the text that these guerrilla gardeners ______.
A. are mainly from the United Kingdom
B. will later get well paid
C. are still not accepted by the local people
D. become more and more organized

There was once, in a little market-town not far from Upsala (瑞典一城市), a peasant who lived there with his family, digging the earth during the week and singing in the choir on Sundays. This peasant had a little daughter to whom he taught the musical alphabet before she knew how to read. Daae was a great musician, perhaps without knowing it. Not a violinist in Scandinavia played as he did. His reputation was widespread and he was always invited to set the couples dancing at weddings and other festivals. His wife died when Christine was entering upon her sixth year. Then the father, who cared only for his daughter and his music, sold his land and went to Upsala in search of fame and fortune. He found nothing but poverty.
He returned to the country, wandering from fair to fair, playing his Scandinavian music pieces, while his child, who never left his side, listened to him in delight or sang to his playing. One day, at Ljimby Fair, Professor Valerius heard them and took them to Gothenburg. He insisted that the father was the first violinist in the world and that the daughter had the making of a great artist. Her education and instruction were provided for. She made rapid progress and charmed everybody with her prettiness, her grace of manner and her real eagerness to please.
When Valerius and his wife went to settle in France, they took Daae and Christine with them. "Mamma" Valerius treated Christine as her daughter. As for Daae, he became ill with homesickness. He never went out of doors in Paris, but lived in a sort of dream which he kept up with his violin. For hours at a time, he remained locked up in his bedroom with his daughter, playing and singing, very, very softly.
Daae seemed not to recover his strength until the summer, when the whole family went to stay at Perros-Guirec, in a far-away corner of Brittany, where the sea was of the same color as in his own country. Often he would play his saddest tunes on the beach and pretend that the sea stopped its roaring to listen to them. And then he persuaded Mamma Valerius to allow him to leave for a while. At the time of the "pardons," the village festivals and dances, he went off with his violin, as in the old days, and was allowed to take his daughter with him for a week. They gave the smallest villages music to last them for a year and slept at night in a barn, refusing a bed at the inn, lying close together on the straw, as when they were so poor in Sweden. At the same time, they were very neatly dressed, refused the halfpence offered to them; and the people around could not understand the behaviour of this country violinist, who walked heavily on the roads with that pretty child who sang like an angel from Heaven. They followed them from village to village.
