【題目】The easy way out isn’t always easiest. I learned that lesson when I decided to treat Doug, my husband of one month, to a special meal. I looked through my cookbook and chose a menu which included homemade bread. Knowing the bread would take time, I started on it as soon as Doug left for work. As I was not experienced in cooking, I thought if a dozen was good, two dozen would be better, so I doubled everything. As Dong loved oranges, I also opened a can of orange and poured it all into the bowl. Soon there was a sticky dough(面團)covered with ugly yellowish marks. Realizing I had failed, I put the dough in the rubbish bin outside so I wouldn't have to face Doug laughing at my work.

I went on preparing the rest of the meal, and, when Doug got home, we sat down to Cornish chicken with rice. He tried to enjoy the meal but seemed disturbed. Twice he got up and went outside, saying he thought he heard a noise. The third time he left, I went to the windows to see what he was doing. Looking out, I saw Doug standing about three feet from the rubbish bin, holding the lid up with a stick and looking into the container. When I came out of the house, he dropped the stick and explained that there was something alive in out rubbish bin. Picking up the stick again, he held the lid up enough for me to see. I felt cold. But I stepped closer and looked harder. Without doubt it was my work. The hot sun had caused the dough to double in size and the fermenting yeast (酵母)made the surface shake and sigh as though it were breathing. I had to admit what the 'living thing 'was and why it was there. I don't know who was more embarrassed by the whole thing--Doug or me?

3Why did the woman put the dough in the rubbish bin?

A. She didn't see the use of keeping it

B. She meant to joke with her husband.

C. She didn't want her husband to see it .

D. She hoped it would soon dry in the sun.

4What made the dough in the rubbish bin make the noise?

A. The rising and falling movement.

【題目】B

When you want to find a job, you have to face the employer and you must know how to introduce yourself well. Then you will be lucky enough.

The first impressions can play a major role in how an employer like you as a candidate(求職者). What you say during the first step of the interview may make a big difference. In fact, some hiring managers may make a decision to refuse a candidate based on what they didn’t do when you met them. That’s why it’s important to pay attention to interview manners and to carefully think through how you will introduce yourself during a job interview.

When arriving at the interview site you can introduce yourself to the receptionist (接待員) by giving your name and telling the purpose of your visit. For example: “My name is Tim Jones and I have an interview scheduled with John Smith at 2 pm.” You will be guided into the interview room or the hiring manager will come out to meet you in the reception area. Again, take the time to introduce yourself so the interviewer knows who you are.

Offer to shake hands, even if the interviewer doesn’t offer his hand first. Tell the interviewer that it is a pleasure to meet him. Smile, and be sure to make eye contact.

Many hiring managers will start an interview with an open-ended question like “Tell me

about yourself.” Your response should focus on the key elements in your background. You should carefully analyze the job first to the interviewer, and you can point out the interests, skills, experiences, and personal qualities.

Your introduction should be brief enough to hold the interest of the interviewer so that you can move on to the next question. Your goal is to connect personally with the interviewer as well as to show that you’re qualified for the job. Of course, your comments should show your enthusiasm for the job and organization. However, don’t overdo it and don’t spend too much time talking about yourself.

【1】What is the purpose of the author to write this passage ?

A. To tell candidates how to go to a reception desk.

B. To tell candidates how to introduce themselves when finding a job.

C. To give some suggestions on how to be a good interviewer.

D. To give some tips on how to be a good receptionist.

2If the interviewer doesn’t offer his hand first, you should ________.

A. ask the interviewer an open-ended question

B. shake hands without looking at the interviewer

C. offer your hand before the interviewer

D. introduce yourself briefly first

3The passage is very useful for _______.

A. anyone who will go to an interview

B. a future receptionist

C. a hiring manager

D. anyone who wants to visit a company

【題目】I remember my mother as a strong woman. She came to America when she was 12—old enough to remember her language, she achieved scores and grades high enough to be admitted to Duke University. With a degree in computer science, she finally became the manager of a company in New York. My mother could give fluent speeches, say “wolves” correctly.

It was my mother who always stressed the importance of language. From the time I was born, I was read to. I would fall asleep to the sounds of my parents’ voices, whether it was my dad’s softly accented, or my mother’s clear English. The flow of language was unbroken, and whether in Chinese or English, the stream of communication flowed through our house.

One October morning in sixth grade, after my mother had left to catch the train to the city, I left the house for the bus stop. I was surprised when I saw our car, the door hanging open. As I drew closer, I saw my mother lying on the ground.

In the hospital, it was hard to believe that the lady who lay before me was my mom. My mother could not remember my name. As the leaves changed colors, it became clear that the stroke had created a wall between my mothers mind and mouth: her mind was not any less dear, but the words she spoke were not what she meant.

The battle my mother faced taught me the importance of language. Without it, identity does not exist; relationships cannot be formed; stories cannot be told; directions cannot be given, and knowing anything about anyone is impossible. Without language, communication cannot take place. Without language, one cannot express the beauty of a sunset or the kindness of a stranger. The world would pass us by in silence.

1From where might the author’s mom come to America?

A. China B. England

C. Russia D. Canada

2According to the last two paragraphs, the author’s mom was unable to .

A. think clearly B. express herself well

C. speak D. open her mouth.

3The underlined word “stroke” in the 4th paragraph most probably refers to .

A. an accident B. a hit

C. an illness D. a robbery

4This passage is mainly about .

A. a strong mother B. the importance of language

C. a family disaster D. the significance of teaching language
