Dear Tom,

It’s a month since you studied in Beijing. How is everything going with you? I am really

happy to spend such an unforgettable experience with you here.

I am going to take part in an English speech contest for middle school students in July this summer. I think the chance is of great importance for me. To have a very good performance, I am making preparations for it. However, I still have some trouble in collecting useful materials. Meanwhile, I find it hard to use English properly. I would appreciate it if you could offer me a hand. I also hope that the great effort I am making will pay off.

You know, I have been missing you since you left, so I hope to see you in Beijing after the

English contest. I cant wait to see you again!

Yours,

Li Hua

How Can I Fight Laziness?

Lazy people will never gain anything in life. However, laziness can be defeated once a few changes have been made in your mind.

【1】 Many people lack sleep constantly, since they stay up too late and get up too early to prepare for work. These people have little motivation once they arrive home. Laziness works hand in hand with a lack of motivation and a tendency to put off things. By adjusting your sleep schedule to provide a few more hours of meaningful rest, you can fight laziness throughout the day.

Another way to fight laziness is to change your mind from passive to active. Some people treat their lives as if they were pushed from task to task. Others take a more positive approach, viewing each task as a challenge they must overcome alone. 2

Some people fight laziness by removing the temptations (誘惑) that surround them. A television in the living room may provide entertainment, but watching too much TV often contributes to laziness. 3 Complete a few tasks and reward yourself with what you enjoy, such as a good dinner or a film.

Laziness can also be a lasting problem at home. Couples and children may all have different energy levels, but laziness can be spread if not dealt with immediately. 4 Be the first to collect and wash dishes after a meal. Others in the home may eventually follow your example and perform their own task. It is difficult to practice laziness when you surrounded by motivated people.

5 Enough exercise and a balanced diet can help you to develop a healthy lifestyle, thus enabling you to have more energy and help lift your spirits.

A. To fight family laziness, set an example.

B. Knowing how to fight laziness is important.

C. One way to fight laziness is to get enough sleep.

D. Finally, taking exercise regularly can help you fight laziness.

E. With strong determination, you will be able to achieve your goal.

F. Laziness appears when you no longer feel in charge of your own mind.

G. Create a reward system for yourself, just as parents do for a child.

【題目】My decision to travel around China lay merely with my curiosity about the place. Before coming here, China seemed alien to me ----a place that expected to be hugely dissimilar from my own British culture.

After travelling from Beijing up to Xi'an, I wanted to challenge myself by choosing a smaller town----Xiahe in Gansu Province. I arrived in Lanzhou at around 5 am, but there were no buses to Xiahe. I managed to spot a policeman and attempted to explain my destination to him in simple English, praying that he would understand. I wasn't sure that he did but I just followed him anyway as I had no choice. He took me on a bus and I didn't know where I was going. Luckily, I met a student who explained to me in English that the policeman was taking me to another bus station where I could take a bus to Xiahe. During this conversation a third man said he was also a policeman and would help me buy tickets. But as he was not in uniform, I was a little doubtful. The uniformed policeman told me it was OK to go with the third man, so I got off the bus with the so-called policeman who at this point, disappeared and I was left in the middle of nowhere. I stood panicking. Around one minute later a police car came and stopped right by me. It was the un-uniformed policeman. I got into the car and he dropped me directly at the bus station, and helped me buy the ticket.

This is one of many experiences that I have had in China. I realized that however different this culture was, there was one thing that would always stand out—kindness. In the west we seem to lack the foundation of trust, yet in China it seems that there will always be someone to answer your questions and lead you the right way.

1Which of the following is the closest in meaning to the underlined word "alien"?

A. Unfriendly. B. Familiar.

C. Strange. D. Attractive.

2What can we learn from the second paragraph?

A. The author doubted the so-called policeman.

B. The third man could speak English fluently.

C. The author followed a student to another bus station.

D. A police car took the un-uniformed policeman away.

3Why did the un-uniformed policeman disappear after the author got off the bus?

A. He hurried to buy a ticket for the author.

B. He went to get a car to pick the author up.

C. The author didn't behave in a friendly way.

D. The author found a uniformed policeman to help him.

4According to the text, what impressed the author deeply in China?

A. Beautiful scenes. B. Terrible transportation.

C. Troubles in small towns. D. People's kindness.

Red envelops have related to the Chinese Lunar New Year for long. I myself have had plenty of experiences both receiving and giving our red envelops in the past and 【1】I mean, who doesn’t love free money?

I’m truly surprised by the degree of people’s obsession(迷戀) with red envelops this year. In fact, everyone I know spent at least a day or two crazily shaking their smart phones【2】Thanks to messaging app WeChat’s new feature that allows users to send money electronically, grabbing red envelopes has never seemed so easy.

Just in case you are one of the very few people who still can’t be involved in the game,3Givers link their WeChat(微信) to their bank accounts, and then they can send specified amounts of money to their WeChat contacts through a personal message. They can also put the cash up for grabs in chat group full of friends, and anyone who acts fast enough will get a share. Later, receivers can transfer the funds from their WeChat back into their own bank accounts.

4I’m always for some harmless fun in life, so my natural response would be: why not? Moreover, I’ve always believed that it’s human nature to want free stuff, regardless of whether you actually need it or not. This may not be a good quality, but it’s not against the law, so I won’t get all judgmental here.5I really can’t blame anyone for their enthusiasm in grabbing red envelops. I would have done it too, had I not thought linking WeChat to my bank accounts was too much trouble.

A. Considering these reasons,

B. here’s how it works.

C. generally speaking, it’s been fun.

D. In theory, this sounds like a fun game.

E. In terms of all the advantages above,

F. mostly trying to get as much as lucky money as possible.

G. In fact, it does harm to our life.
