【題目】What makes a person a giver or a taker? The idea of “give versus take” takes shape in all relationships of our lives. We're either giving advice, making time for people, or we're on the receiving end. We alternate between the two based on different situations we face on a daily basis, it not an hourly one.

According to Adam Grant, a professor at Pennsylvania University, most people are matchers. They make careful observations on takers and make it a point for them to pay something back. They hate to see people who act so generously towards others without receiving any reward. Actually, most matchers will try to promote and support givers so that they can get the good they deserve.

Another professor named Hannah Rile Bowles, from Harvard University, led a study on the idea. She asked 200 senior managers to sit down in pairs where one person would act as the boss and the other as an employee to negotiate salary promotions. Male employees asked for an average salary of $146 k while the females asked for only $141 k. But why did they not bargain as hard as the men? Simply because they were more likely to be givers.

As a woman, I do enjoy the act of giving up my time, my knowledge and my care and attention to others. I don't expect anything in return, but I do tend to pull myself away when I feel like I'm being taken for granted. I also tend to get upset when I see a loved one's continuous actions of kindness go unnoticed. So it's safe to say I'm 50% giver,35% matcher and 15% taker.

I do know someone, however, who is 99% giver. They’re devoting their time, sharing valuable insights and going out of their way for everyone who crosses their path. Although they've changed the lives of many people, they rarely see any of it returned. But the universe is slowly repaying them; they’re now extremely successful, well known for what they do.

【題目】Three Simple Ways to Make Exercise a Habit

A lot of people want to build an exercise habit that sticks. Of course, wanting to make exercise a habit and actually doing it are two different things. Changing your behavior is difficult. Living a new type of lifestyle is hard. This is especially true when you throw in very personal feelings about body image and self-worth. 1 Here are three simple ways to make exercise a habit.

Develop a ritual to make starting easier.

Habits are behaviors that you repeat over and over again, which means they are also behaviors that you start over and over again. 2 In many ways, building new habits is simply an exercise in getting started time after time.

3

The best way to make exercise a habit is to start with an exercise that is so easy that you can do it even when you are running low on willpower and motivation. In the words of an expert, start with something that is so easy you can't say no.

Focus on the habit first and the results later.

4 Most people start with some type of goal. This is the wrong approach. It's better to focus on the system rather than the goal. What matters most in the beginning is establishing a new normal and building you will stick to; not the results that you get. In other words, in the first 6 months it is more important to not miss workouts than it is to make progress. 5

A. Exercise even when you're “too tired”.

B. Start with an exercise that is ridiculously small.

C. The typical approach to diet and exercise is to focus on results first.

D. It is more important not to miss taking exercise than to make progress.

E. In other words, if you don't consistently get started, then you won't have a habit.

F. Both there are some strategies that can make it easier to stick with an exercise habit.

G. Once you become the type of person who doesn’t miss workouts, then you can worry about making progress and improving.

【題目】根據(jù)短文理解,選擇正確答案。
A dog, it is said, is a man's best friend. Put a dog, a kid and a book together, and you have a struggling reader's best friend.
The therapy dogs of R.E.A.D. – Reading Education Assistance Dogs – have been helping children improve their reading skills since 1999, when Intermountain Therapy Animals (ITA) began the program in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Today, tens of thousands of R.E.A.D. teams – dogs and their owners – volunteer to spend time with youngsters in schools and libraries across the United States and around the world. The idea is that sharing a book with a nonjudgmental (不帶評論的) partner encourages students' confidence and helps develop a love of reading.
Izzy, a Havanese therapy dog, is a regular visitor to Public School 57 in East Harlem, New York. Students meet him in the library, pick out a book and sit down on the carpet. Izzy snuggles (依偎) up to them and gets ready to hear a story.
“I love reading to Izzy because he listens to me, and he doesn't make fun of me when I make a mistake,” says third-grader Aelane Vasquez. The 9-year-old, whose parents are from Mexico, is one of 15 Latin-American students at the school who were selected for the program.
“All the students that we work with in the R.E.A.D. program were behind reading levels at the beginning of the year,” Bridget McElroy, who teaches English as a Second Language, explained. “Now most of them have reached the average level, if not above it.” That's important, because achieving proficiency (熟練) in reading is vital for kids to succeed. Studies have shown that students who can't read at grade level by the end of third grade are four times less likely to graduate high school by the age of 19.
The R.E.A.D. teams from New York Therapy Animals work with 175 kids at Public School 57 and nine other schools.
McElroy said she sees a marked difference in Aelane and her classmates, and not just in study. “Not only do the kids have time to practice reading, what we are really seeing is that they are excited to read and practice even when Izzy is not here,” she said.
(1)According to this passage, dogs are the best friend of kids because ____.
A.they keep kids company through therapy
B.they can protect kids from danger
C.they are helpful to encourage kids to read
D.they are struggling and work hard
(2)What does the example of Aelane Vasquez show?
A.Kids from Mexico love reading to Izzy.
B.Only Latin-American students can be chosen for the program.
C.The R.E.A.D. teams are responsible for the selection.
D.Listening without judgment is inspiring for the kids.
(3)Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The students in the R.E.A.D. program improve a lot only in study.
B.Without proficiency in reading, it's difficult for kids to succeed.
C.All the students in the R.E.A.D. program can be above the reading level.
D.When not accompanied by the dog, kids will stop practicing reading consequently.
