【原文】

When I was a teenager growing up in France, I wanted to leave school and have my own life. I could only do this by working in the local paper factory in my town. When I told my father I wanted to leave school, he said, “OK. Let’s go to the paper factory.” Two days later, he took me to the factory. I thought everyone would be working together and having fun.

I walked around the factory, looking at the building and listening to the noise. It was terrible. I ran back to my father and said, “I want to go home.” He asked me, “What do you think of the factory?” “It’s awful,” I answered. I went back to school the next day and studied hard. I was admitted into a famous college. I studied language there. Thanks to my father and our trip to the paper factory, I now work at the United Nations. And my father is very proud of me.

【題目】When the natural climate changes due to global warming, it can surely affect seals. The majority of them live in the Antarctic region so as the ice is melting, their natural habitat(棲息地)can be seriously affected. These changes don’t take place overnight. They can be the result of many years of additional temperatures in the area. The seals then have to find ways to adapt.

Seals depend on the cool air currents to bring plenty of food for them. When the temperatures get higher, there is less and less food and the seal population starts to get depleted. Mothers aren’t healthy enough to feed their babies. Many of them end up abandoned as the mothers have to leave to find their own source of food.

The fact that their desire to produce young can be changed by the warmer temperatures is frightening too. It is also believed that the warmer temperatures can allow different diseases and viruses to attack the seals. This is a huge concern as they can rapidly wipe out huge numbers of seals out there.

However, these changes in climate and temperature aren’t all bad for other species of seals. Scientists have found that those living in warmer climates are producing more young due to the changes. Research also shows that the females are moving further to find food and water. When they are out of the reach of the governing males, they are more willing to accept the moves of other males in the group.

This is good news too because it means that there will be more selection in the gene pool(基因庫)for future generations. It can help the seals as a species adapt to changes in their natural environment more easily.

The climate change problem for seals is directly linked to humans. When we take action to change what we let out into the environment, we will make positive changes for the seals. However, it is going to take a very long time to reverse(徹底改變)the effects of what has already been done.

1What does the author regard climate changes for seals as?

A. An unavoidable disaster for existence.

B. A double-edged sword.

C. A mirror of evolution

D. A requirement for more choice in the gene pool.

2What does the underlined phrase in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?

A. Explode B. Disappear

C. Shrink D. Vary

3What will happen to the seals in warmer climates?

A. Their number will be on the increase

B. The female seals will be in the lead.

C. Their genes will change a great deal.

D. The females will keep away from the males.

4Which the following can be the best title for the text?

A. The Importance of Protecting Seals.

B. Seals’ adaptation to Climate Change.

C. How Climate Change Affects Seals.

D. Why Are Seals Becoming Less and Less.

【題目】 Norman Borlaug, who is making a difference, is known around the world. He is often described as the man who has saved more lives than any other person in history. Norman Borlaug is considered the father of what has been called the Green Revolution. His ideas about agriculture increased the crop production and ended hunger in many nations. Mr. Borlaug continues to be a leader among agricultural researchers.

Norman Borlaug was born in 1914 on a farm in the American state of Iowa. In the middle of the 20th century, the world population was expanding faster than the food production. Experts said many people in developing countries would face starvation (饑餓).

Norman Borlaug was an agricultural researcher at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center in Mexico. He developed methods of growing wheat that increased the amount harvested by three times. He later repeated this success in India, Pakistan and Africa.

His methods of farming saved millions of people who would have starved to death. Norman Borlaug was given the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in 1970.

Norman Borlaug is still urging experts to think about the needs of people around the world. His latest concern is a disease in wheat called UG99. He says it has the power to destroy most of the wheat being grown around the world. He says reductions in agricultural programs have made it harder to take action against such threats.

Mr. Borlaug's granddaughter Julie works at the center named after him at Texas A&M University in Dallas. She says his worry about food problems rises from the belief that hunger is unacceptable. She says Norman Borlaug still believes it is our responsibility as human beings to feed one another.

We may have different opinion on organizing class activities. When having a different opinion, I may choose to give it and respect the opinion of the majority. The mainly reason for my choice is that I was bringing up in a culture emphasizing collectivism(集體主義). So I tend to sacrifice my own interest for the beneficial of the group. Last Sunday, we argued about whether to have a picnic in a park and go to a museum. I would love to go to a museum, but most of my classmates want to go for a picnic. Which is often the case, I decided to follow with them, and we did have lots of fun that day. Sometimes giving up a little means get more.
