Guided writing(25分)

Directions: Write an English composition in 120—150 words according to the instructions given below in Chinese.

人們常說“戰(zhàn)勝自己,超越自我”。請你以“I only compete with myself”為題寫一篇短文。敘述你生活或?qū)W習(xí)中的一件事,說明只有戰(zhàn)勝了自己,超越了自己才有意義,才是真正意義上的成功。

【答案】

In the real world, everyone wants to be splendid. Someone looks for a man of straw to catch up with, while others just compete with themselves. To me own, I certainly stand for the latter.

As a high school student, my main purpose is to get high marks and enter the dreaming university. I once locked on the number one student in our grade as my target object. But the result turned out to be far from satisfactory. Under greater and greater pressure, I just couldn’t bend my energy on studies and often made stupid mistakes. Hence, I stopped forcing myself and struggled to the very end just to be the best of me. What I required myself to achieve was not to be better than anyone else but to defeat the old one. And since then, I have performed better and made progress day by day.

So it is really useless setting unrealistic goals, since there is always someone who is either prettier or smarter than us. We might have kept chasing after others for a lifetime but finally found that we didn’t achieve anything. As the saying goes, “God only saves the man who saves himself.” and analogously, we only need to compete with ourselves. The sun will illuminate every corner of the land as long as we try to be the best of us.

Since the 1970s, scientists have been searching for ways to link the brain with computers. Brain-computer interface(BCI) technology could help people with disabilities send commands to machines.
Recently, two researchers, Jose Millan and Michele Tavella from the Federal Polytechnic school in Lausanne, Switzerland, demonstrated(展示)a small robotic wheelchair directed by a person’s thoughts.
In the laboratory, Tavella operated the wheelchair just by thinking about moving his left or right hand. He could even talk as he watched the vehicle and guided it with his thoughts.
“our brain has billions of nerve ceils. These send signals through the spinal cord(脊髓)to the muscles to give us the ability to move. But spinal cord injuries or other conditions can prevent these weak electrical signals from reaching the muscles,” Tavella says.  “Our system allows disabled people to communicate with external world and also to control devices.”
The researchers designed a special cap for the user. This head cover picks up the signals from the scalp(頭皮) and sends them to a computer. The computer interprets the signals and commands the motorized wheelchair. The wheelchair also has two cameras that identify objects in its path. They help the computer react to commands from the brain.
Prof. Millan, the team leader, says scientists keep improving the computer software that interprets brain signals and turns them into simple commands. “The practical possibilities that BCI technology offers to disabled people can be grouped in two categories: communication, and controlling devices. One example is this wheelchair.”
He says his team has set two goals. One is testing with real patients, so as to prove that this is a technology they can benefit from. And the other is to make sure that they can use the technology over long periods of time.
【小題1】BCI is a technology that can______.

A.help to update computer systemsB.link the human brain with computers
C.help the disabled to recoverD.control a person's thoughts
【小題2】How did Tavella operate the wheelchair in the laboratory?
A.By controlling his muscles.B.By talking to the machine
C.By moving his hand.D.By using his mind.
【小題3】Which of the following shows the path of the signals described in Paragraph 5?
A.scalp→computer→cap→wheelchairB.computer→cap→scalp→wheelchair
C.scalp→cap→computer→wheelchairD.cap→computer→scalp→wheelchair
【小題4】The team will test with real patients to _____ .
A.make profits from themB.prove the technology useful to them
C.make them live longerD.learn about their physical condition
【小題5】Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A.Switzerland, the BCI Research Center
B.New Findings About How the Human Brain Works
C.BCI Could Mean More Freedom for the Disabled
D.Robotic Vehicles Could Help to Cure Brain Injuries
