How to teach a child to respect

As a child grows out of being an baby and begins to notice and react to the world around him, you may find yourself wondering how you possibly impart (傳授) all of the things that he needs to become a responsible, respectful adult. 【1】 A child who learns to respect all he meets not only receives respect from others, but also learns to respect himself as well. Here are some instructions.

Show your child respect. This is perhaps the best way to teach your child how to respect others. Listen to your child by giving him your full attention and he will learn to listen to you, understanding how important this is in communication.

2 The more you say “please” and “thank you” to your child, the more likely he will learn to use them with you and others. Politeness then becomes a normal part of any conversation.

Agree to disagree. 3 Explain your decision so that he will understand your reasoning and expect respectful responses. Disagreeing with you doesnt equate to disobedience (違抗).

Control your impulse (沖動) to overact. When a situation arises between you and your child that requires calmness, keep in mind that you are supposed to be modeling correct behavior. 4

Praise, praise, praise! So much is focused on what a child does wrong and how to correct it that the accomplishments are not celebrated enough.5】.

A. Teach manners by using polite requests and responses.

B. Try to remember that a child won’t always agree with you.

C. Respect is necessary for a meaningful and successful life.

D. If he sees you lose your temper, he is more likely to respond that way in future.

【2】A

【3】B

【4】D

【5】F

【解析】

本文講述的是如何教育我們的孩子學會尊敬他人,給出了一些具體的建議。

【1】C 根據(jù)前句中的become a responsible, respectful adult.以及橫線后一句的A child who learns to respect說明這里討論的都是尊敬在生活中的重要作用。故C項符合上下文。

【2】 A根據(jù)下句The more you say “please” and “thank you”可知這里的“please” and “thank you” 都是一些禮貌的表示尊敬的用語。故A符合上下文。

【3】B本段的標題是Agree to disagree.也就是說要學會接受孩子的反對。B項內(nèi)容“孩子不會總是同意你的意見”與之吻合。

【4】D根據(jù)前句keep in mind that you are supposed to be modeling correct behavior可知你的一些好的行為也許會被模仿,那么D項“如果我們發(fā)脾氣,孩子看見了,他們以后也會模仿這樣的行為”。符合上下文。

Some Ways to Deal With Hardship and Pain in Life

Regardless of the difficulties you may face, it’s getting back up and moving forward that counts the most when you need to deal with hardship. 【1】

Write or talk about how you feel

Keeping my feelings to myself used to make me feel lonely, but when I found someone who actually cared about me, it became natural to share how I felt with him and that contributed to my ability to overcome troublesome situations. 2 Although talking to strangers about your issues may seem crazy, it actually isn’t.

3

It is said that running away from your problems will never help, and though that’s partially true, it doesn’t mean that you need to make yourself go so deeply into a situation that you run out of air to breathe and lose the ability to weigh the pros and cons of your choices. That happens more than we like to admit, which is why it’s important to separate yourself from a situation long enough to think clearly without having people hanging over your shoulders.

Remind yourself that you’re not alone

Regardless of who or what you depend on, you need to remind yourself that you are not alone; you have people who do care. 4 Sometimes it’s strangers who may share the same feelings as you do. Think about it—you may not know any of these readers personally but/span> they could be in the exact same situation as you, so in fact, no one is truly alone.

Accept the results and get back up again

5 Whether the results of your choices proved to be helpful or not, it’s time for you to accept them and get back up. This time you have a new experience to add to your book of life so the next time something tries to knock you down, it won’t be easy because you will be strong and determined to push forward. Life will go on, time will never stand still, and it rests upon you to make the right decision of moving forward.

A. Separate yourself from the situation.

B. Tell yourself to accept the hardship.

C. Finally, it’s time to accept what has happened.

D. All in all, remember that life is short.

E. Not only did I speak to him about how I felt, but I decided to blog about it.

F. Here are some things I've tried just to help me believe in a brighter future and get over a tough situation.

G. Even if it’s just one person, that’s enough to give you reason to remind yourself that you will never truly be alone.

Last weekend we go mountain climbing. Even the heavy rain in the morning could not prevent us going. Set off very early, we went along an extreme narrow road, all in high spirits.

On every side of the road was green fields and some farm houses. We could hear the sound of the rain and our footsteps mixing with our laughter. At noon we reached the top of the mountain. That surprised us most there was the beauty of scenes. After having short rest there and sharing with the food we had brought, we started going down. It rained even harder. We were wet to the skin, and we still sang and laughed happily.

【題目】Some people are like homing pigeons: Drop them off anywhere, and they’ll find their way around. Other people, though, can’t tell when they’re holding a map upside down. Are the directionally challenged just bad learners?

Not all of your navigational (導(dǎo)航的)skills are learned. Research shows that your sense of direction is innate. An innate ability is something you are born with. Your brain has special navigational neurons—head-direction cells, place cells, and grid cells (網(wǎng)格細胞)—and they help program your inside compass when you’re just a baby.

In 2010, scientists carried out an experiment to study baby rats’ neural activity in their brains. Although the rats were newborns, the researchers discovered that their head-direction cells (which help them recognize the direction they’re facing) were fully grown and developed. The rats, it seemed, were born with a sense of direction. And they hadn’t even opened their eyes yet!

Humans, of course, are not rats. But the hippocampus—the brain area we use for navigation—is similar in most mammals. If the rat’s compass develops this way, then it’s likely that a human’s compass does, too.

If we’re born with a sense of direction, then why are some people so good at getting lost? The scientists found that the two other cells—place and grid cells—developed within the first month. Place cells are thought to help us form a map in our mind, while grid cells help us navigate new and unfamiliar places. The two cells work together, and that’s where the trouble might be.

People who took part in a 2013 study played a video game that required them to travel quickly between different places. Monitoring their brains, the scientists found that grid cells helped the gamers recognize where they were—even without landmarks. According to researcher Michael Kahana, differences in how grid cells work may help explain why some people have a better sense of direction than others.

【1】What did the 2010 research find?

A. Rats have a natural ability to recognize directions.

B. Rats’ hippocampus is different from that of humans.

C. Rats usually find their way without opening their eyes.

D. Baby rats have as many head-direction cells as grown-ups.

A. Place cells let us know how to read a map.

B. Grid cells help us reach the place we are going to.

C. They help us use a compass when we lose our way.

D. Place and grid cells grow later than head-direction cells.

【3】Why are some people so good at getting lost?

A. They can’t remember landmarks.

B. Their grid cells can’t work very well.

C. They are unfamiliar with new places.

D. Their ability to follow directions is poor.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

A. Human navigational skills.

B. The compass in rats’ body.

C. Why grid cells are useful.

D. How homing pigeons work.

Then she easily broke it into two pieces. Next, she tied several chopsticks together, representing a family. She showed the girls it was hard to break the tied chopsticks.
