【題目】One afternoon last week, I saw three tearful children from my son’s school being comforted by teachers. That morning, my 11-year-old had stomach pains, retching(干嘔)into a bowl. Talking to other mothers later, I heard about other children with stomachache or difficulty sleeping the night before.

What caused so much pain? Sports day. Sports day might be necessary at a highly-competitive independent school, but not at a village primary school. For the children who can fly like the wind, sports day causes no problem. For those who are overweight or just not good at sport, it is a nightmare(噩夢). Even for those who enjoy running but fall halfway down the track in front of the entire school and their parents, it can prove a disaster.

Why do we put our children through this annual suffering? Some may say competition is character building; or it’s taking part, not winning, that’s important; or that it is a tradition of school life. I just felt great pity for those children in tears or in pain.

Team games at the end of sports day produced some close races, wild enthusiasm, lots of shouting—and were fun to watch. More importantly, the children who were not so fast or quick at passing the ball were hidden a little from everyone’s eyes. Some of them also had the thrill of being on the winning side.

I wish that sports day could be abandoned and replaced with some other less-competitive event. Perhaps an afternoon of team games, with a few races for those who want them, would be less stressful for the children and a lot more fun to watch.

【1】What can we learn about the author’s son from Paragraph 1?

A. He talked with some mothers.

B. He comforted his classmates.

C. He had difficulty in sleeping.

D. He suffered from stomachache.

【2】Sports day is still an annual event in this school probably because .

A. this is an independent school

B. it is a tradition of the school

C. it helps children lose weight

D. children enjoy watching sports

【3】What does the author think about team games?

A. They should include more stressful races.

B. They are acceptable to different children.

C. They should be abandoned at primary schools.

D. They are less fun for those who love running.

【4】What is the author’s attitude towards sports day?

A. Critical. B. Neutral. C. Positive. D. Ambiguous.

Two years before, I traveled to Brazil and I rented for a car. Unfortunate, I had an accident and hit another car, and I needed to stay in a hospital for at least two week. I called my parents, so I did not tell them what had happened. I knew that they will be worried about myself because I was so farther away, and that my mother would not sleep if she knew. Therefore, I told them interested stories and how I was enjoying Brazil. As a result, nobody knew truth. I still think that it was the right thing to do.

As we know, it was not easy for J.K Rowling to create Harry Potter. The idea for Harry Potter come to her while she was on a delayed train between Manchester and London. She wrote down her ideas on the back of envelope. She then continued to add flesh for the bones of the first Harry Potter story. During her creation, she had the extra burden of look after her baby and had to write with hand for a lack of typewriter. It was only in 1997 she completed the first Harry Potter story. After the first book, the success of each of the following titles was automatically. The fifth book sold about seven million copies the day when it was published. What makes the books so important are that they create a special literary bond between parents and children. 【題目】The film stars out as a normal day at a typical American high school. Friends chat in the dining room and boys play football. But there's big surprise when the movie ends with two students going crazy in the school-shooting and killing people.

This is Elephant. It stars real school kids. American director Gus Van Sant had no ready-made lines. The student actors made up their own dialogue, with Van Sant asking them to base their characters on their own lives.

Although it may not sound very high quality, the film won the Palme d'Or (金棕獎) for Best Film and the award for Best Director at the Cannes film festival.

The film is based on the shootings at a high school in the US, where two boys killed 13 people and then themselves in 1999.

The title of the movie refers to the old expression about a problem that's as hard to ignore as an elephant in the house.

The film takes a close look at a few hours in the lives of the victims and the killers. It shows how high school is a different experience for everyone---fun and friendly, or hard and lonely.

In many ways, the two boys, who carry out the shooting, act like ordinary kids. They joke around with one boy's mother as she serves them cakes and play the piano.

But there're hints of the anger they feel inside. One of the boys is bullied (欺負) at school. The other plays violent video games. But Van Sant isn't blaming their killings on either bullying or violent games. In fact, the film doesn't offer any reason for why school violence happens.

"I didn't want to explain anything. It's up to the audience to draw its own conclusions," said the 51-year-old director.

【1】The lines of the film were ________.

A. given by the director

B. created by student actors

C. thought out by the director during the acting

D. carefully designed by professional people

【2】 The film doesn't tell why school shootings happen________.

A. so as to leave room for the audience to think and judge

B. because life itself is the problem maker

C. because the mental problems of students are hard to explain

D. but there are some hints of the reasons

【3】The film is named Elephant because ________.

A. an elephant is always gentle and never causes trouble

B. an elephant is a symbol of big problems in American schools

C. elephant is used to suggest that the school crime is a big problem

D. the two boys liked elephants when alive

【4】What’s the passage mainly about?

A. It shows American school life.

B. It introduces the film Elephant.

C. It tells people to be careful while in peace.

D. It reports a school killing in a US school.

【題目】“Old wives’ tales” are beliefs passed down from one generation to another. For example, most of us remember our parents’ telling us to eat more of certain foods or not to do certain things. Is there any truth in these teachings? Some of them agree with present medical thinking, but others have not passed the test of time.

Did your mother ever tell you to eat your carrots because they are good for your eyes? Scientists now report that eating carrots can help prevent a serious eye disease called macular degeneration. Eating just one carrot a day can reduce the possibility of getting this disease by 40%. Garlic is good for you, too. It can kill the type of virus that causes colds.

Unfortunately, not all of Mom’s advice passed the test of medical studies. For example, generations of children have been told not to go swimming within an hour after eating. But research suggests that there is no danger in doing so. Do sweets cause tooth problems?Well, yes and no. Sticky sweets made with grains(谷物) tend to cause more problems than sweets made with simple sugars.

Even though science can tell us that some of our traditional beliefs don’t hold_water,_there is still a lot of truth in the old wives’ tales. After all, much of this knowledge has been accumulated (積累) from thousands of years of experience in family health care. We should respect this body of knowledge even as we search for clear scientific support to prove it true or false.

1Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?

A. Sticky sweets are damaging to our teeth.

B. Eating garlic is good for our eyes.

C. Swimming after a meal is dangerous.

【題目】閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C和D)中, 選出最佳選項。

According to the US government, wind farms off the Pacific coast could produce 900 gigawatts of electricity every year.Unfortunately, the water there is far too deep for even the tallest windmills to touch bottom. An experiment under way off the coast of Norway, however, could help put them anywhere.

The project, called Hywind, is the world’s first large-scale deepwater wind turbine (渦輪發(fā)電機).Although it uses a fairly standard 152-ton, 2.3-megawatt turbine, Hywind represents totally new technology. The turbine will be fixed 213 feet above the water on a floating spar, a technology Hywind’s creator, the Norwegian company StatoilHydro, has developed recently. The steel spar, which is filled with stones and goes 328 feet below the sea surface, will be tied to the ocean floor by three cables ; these will keep the spar stable and prevent the turbine from moving up and down in the waves.Hywind’s stability in the cold and rough sea would prove that even the deepest corners of the ocean are suitable for wind power. If all goes according to the plan, the turbine will start producing electricity six miles off the coast of southwestern Norway as early as September.

To produce electricity on a large scale, a commercial wind farm will have to use bigger turbines than Hywind does, but it’s difficult enough to balance such a large turbine so high on a floating spar in the middle of the ocean. To make that turbine heavier, the whole spar’s center of gravity must be moved much closer to the ocean’s surface. To do that, the company plans to design a new kind of wind turbine, one whose gearbox (變速箱) sits at sea level rather than behind the blades.

Hywind is a test run, but the benefits for perfecting floating wind-farm technology could be extremely large.Out at sea, the wind is often stronger and steadier than close to shore, where all existing offshore windmills are planted.Deep-sea farms are invisible from land, which helps overcome the windmill-as-eyesore objection. If the technology catches on, it will open up vast areas of the planet’s surface to one of the best low-carbon power sources available.

【1】The Hywind project uses totally new technology to ensure the stability of_________.

A.the cables which tie the spar to the ocean floor

B.the spar which is floating in deep-sea water

C.the blades driven by strong and steady sea wind

D.the stones filled in the spar below the sea surface

【2】To balance a bigger turbine high on a floating spar, a new type of turbine is to be designed with its gearbox sitting_________.

A.on the sea floor

B.on the spar top

C.at sea level

D.behind the blades

【3】Wide applications of deepwater wind power technology can_________.

A.solve the technical problems of deepwater windmills

B.make financial profits by producing more turbines

C.settle the arguments about environmental problems

D.explore low-carbon power resources available at sea
