I noticed the woman when I entered the newsroom. My secretary told me she wanted to put an ad to1a baby. So I suggested several2lines for these ads to her:3, Baby to love; or Dear Birth Mother, Let Us Help You. The ad would contain4about her and her husband: they were5, could afford to raise a child. But then something6me: the major newspapers carried ads like this and their7were larger than ours. “Have you tried the major ones?” I asked. “Yes, but all failed and one more wouldn’t8.” She handed me a check and left with a9smile.
A week later the woman called in a10of delight: “Please don’t run the ad again. We ’ve connected with11. The baby is due in a month.” Good news. I asked her if she12keep in touch if the adoption13to have a happy ending. She agreed but added when the adoption was final she was14to give me the story.
One day my phone rang. I15her voice immediately. “The adoption is final. Would you like to come and meet him?” Happily, I made a (an ) 16with her for the next day. “His name is Ben,” she said, as I started to take17. “He slept through the night from the start. Now he’s smiling and starting to turn over. Of course I’m not18him. If he is a little slow.” She paused. “ Oh, I should tell you Ben has Down’s Syndrome.(唐氏綜合癥)” I stopped writing . I wasn’t sure how to19. But she smiled “Ben was meant for us, don’t you see? He needs me more than a20developing child would.” She sat on the sofa, holding her son. Both of them smiled. “You wanted a story with a happy ending,” said the woman “ You got it.”

Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, I was driving to my parents’ home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station(加油站) about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register(收款臺(tái)), I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.

I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend’s. We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.

I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me. Soon afterward, I  received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.

Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I’d left the lights on all day, and the battery(電池) was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership—a shop selling cars—was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.

“Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?”I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would accept no payment, so when I got home, I wrote them a note to say thanks. I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank you, and it meant a lot, he said.

The battery of the author’s car was dead because         .

  A. something went wrong with the lights

  B. his meeting lasted a whole day

  C. he forgot to turn off the lights

By telling his own experiences, the author tries to show         .

The park bench was deserted as I sat down to read beneath the long branches of an old willow tree.   31  at life, I have a good reason to frown, for the world was intent on   32  me down.
And if that weren't enough to ruin my day, a young boy out of breath   33 me, all tired from play. He stood   34  in front of me with his head tilted down and said with great excitement, "Look what I found!" In his hand was a   35 . What a pitiful sight, its petals were all worn - not enough rain, or too little light. Wanting him to take his dead flower away and go off to play, I   36  a small smile and then looked away.

So I  40  for the flower, and replied, "Just what I need." Again,  41  placing the flower in my hand, he held it mid-air without reason or plan. I heard my voice trembling. Tears shone like the sun as I thanked him for picking the very best one. "You're welcome," he smiled, and then ran off to play, not realizing the  44  he'd had on my day. I sat there and wondered how he managed to see a  45   woman beneath an old willow tree. How did he 46 my self-indulged plight(困境)? Perhaps he'd been  47  with true sight from his heart by God.
Through the eyes of a blind child, at last I could see, the problem was not with the world; the problem was me. For all of those times I myself had been blind. I decided to see beauty, and 48  every second that belongs to mine.  49 I held that dead flower up to my nose and breathed in the  50  of a beautiful rose , I smiled as that young boy. Another flower in his hand was about to change the life of an unsuspecting old man.

It was the afternoon of December 24, the day before Christmas; and as the newest doctor in our office, I had to work. The only thing that brightened my day was the beautifully decorated Christmas tree in our waiting room and a gift sent to me by a fellow I was dating — a dozen long-stemmed red roses.

As I was cleaning my office, I was told a lady urgently needed to speak with me. As I stepped out, I noticed a young, tired-looking woman with a baby in her arms. Nervously, she explained that her husband — a prisoner in a nearby prison — was my next patient. She told me she wasn’t allowed to visit her husband in prison and that he had never seen his son. Her request was for me to let the boy’s father sit in the waiting room with her as long as possible before I called him for his appointment. Since my schedule wasn’t full, I agreed. After all, it was Christmas Eve.

A short time later, her husband arrived — with chains on his feet and hands, and two armed guards as bodyguards. The woman’s tired face lit up like our little Christmas tree when her husband took a seat beside her. I kept glancing out to watch them laugh, cry and share their child. After almost an hour, I called the prisoner back to my office. The patient seemed like a gentle and modest man. I wondered what he possibly could have done to be held under such conditions. I tried to make him as comfortable as possible.

At the end of the appointment, I wished him a Merry Christmas----a difficult thing to say to a man headed back to prison. He smiled and thanked me. He also said he felt saddened by the fact he hadn’t been able to get his wife anything for Christmas. On hearing this, I was inspired with a wonderful idea.

I’ll never forget the look on both their faces as the prisoner gave his wife the beautiful, long-stemmed roses. I’m not sure who experienced the most joy — the husband in giving, the wife in receiving, or myself in having the opportunity to share in this special moment.

1.What can be inferred from the first paragraph?

A. The writer was a newcomer to her office.

B. A fellow sent her a dozen red roses as Christmas present.

C. She was in low spirits because she had to work before Christmas.

D. She was at work with a light heart.

2.The young woman came to the writer’s office for the purpose of __________.

A. having her baby examined

B. giving her husband a chance to make his escape

C. having her husband examined

D. getting a chance for her family to get together

3.The underlined part in paragraph 3 most probably means “__________”.

A. to be sent to hospital                       B. to be separated from his family

C. to be comfortable                             D. to become a prisoner

4.What does the writer learn from the story?

A. The wife experienced the most joy in receiving.

B. An act of kindness can mean a lot.

C. The prisoner was treated with mercy.

D. Whoever breaks the law should be punished.
