Competition for admission to the country’s top private schools has always been tough. This is spreading from Manhattan to the rest of the country. Precise 50 data on private schools are unavailable, but interviews with representatives of independent and religious schools all told the same 51: too many applicants, higher rejection rates. Surveys indicate that Americans’ No. 1 52 is education. 53 the long economic boom(繁榮) has given parents more income, many are turning to private schools, even at price tags of well over $10,000 a year. “We’re getting applicants from a broader area, 54, than we ever have in the past,” said Besty Haugh of the Latin School of Chicago, which experienced a 20 percent increase in 55 this year.
The problem is that while demand has increased, supply has not. “Every year, there are a few children who do not find places, but this year, for the first time that I know of, there are a(n) 56 number of children who don’t have places,” said Krents, who also heads a private-school admissions group in New York.
So what can parents do to give their 4-year-old a(n) 57? Schools know there is no simple way to pick a class when children are so young. Many schools give preference to boys or girls or alumni(校友) children. Some use lotteries. But most rely on a 58 of subjective and objective measures: tests that at best 59 developmental maturity and learning potential, interviews with parents and observation of applicants in classroom settings. They also want a diverse mix. Children may end up on a waiting list simply because their birthdays 60 at the wrong time year, or because too many applicants were boys.
The worst thing a parent can do is to pressure preschoolers to perform --- 61, by pushing them to read or do math exercises 62 they’re ready. Instead, the experts say, parents should take a breath and look for 63. Another year in preschool may be all that’s needed. Parents, meanwhile, may need a more 64 mind about relatively unknown private schools --- or about magnet(具有吸引力的)schools in the public system. There’s no sign of the private-school boom letting up.

My friend Monty Roberts told me a story about a young boy. One day at school, the boy was asked to write a paper   36  what he wanted to be and do when he grew up.
That night he wrote a seven – paper   37  his dream of owning a farm. He put a great deal of his   38  into the paper and the next day he handed it in to his   39 . Two days later he received his paper back. On the   40  page was a large red F with a   41  that read, “See me after class.” The boy went to see the teacher after class and asked, “  42  did I receive an F?” The teacher said, “This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like   43 . Owning a farm requires a lot of money. There’s no   44  a young man could ever do it.” Then the teacher added, “  45  you will rewrite this paper, I will reconsider your   46 .”
The boy went home and   47  about it long and hard. Finally, after a week, he turned in the   48 paper, making no changes.
Monty then said, “I tell you this story because you are sitting in my farm. I   49  have that school paper over fireplace.” He added, “The   50  part of the story is that two summers ago the same schoolteacher   51  30 kids to camp out on my farm. When the teacher was   52 , he said, ‘Look Monty, I can tell you this now. When I was your teacher, I was something of a dream    53 . During those years I stole a lot of kids’ dreams.   54  you had enough courage not to   55 yours.”
Don’t let anyone steal your dreams. Follow your heart, no matter what…

There was a park near my home. But I didn’t go there very often. Many people said there was nothing special. One afternoon I went into the park and found it was really small. I walked quickly because there wasn’t much to see. I walked for some time and found myself standing in front of two paths. 71  I found that the two paths were different from each other.
The left one was wide and clean. There were lots of flowers on both sides of the path. Though the flowers weren’t very beautiful, they made me feel good. I decided to take this path. But wait! I looked at the right one. The path didn’t look nice.  72  Grass grew everywhere. For a long time I couldn’t make up my mind.
73  It wasn’t nice , but I didn’t want to give up. At last, I came to the end of the path. Ah! There was a small garden there. It was beautiful, perhaps the most beautiful garden I had ever seen.  74
Many people told me that there was nothing much to see in the park. Now I’d like to tell them that if they had followed the right way, they would have felt differently. But when I told them about what I had seen in the park, they just smiled at me without saying a word. I knew they didn’t believe me. They couldn’t even remember that path because it was so small.
75  Don’t be afraid to choose a different path. You may get a big surprise!

A.There is nothing that I want to see.
B.It looked like it had not been cleaned for months.
C.After a while a strange feeling made me follow the dirty path.
D.“ Which way should I go?” I asked myself. I looked at one way, then the other.
E. I told them what happened.
F. My trip to the park that day made me understand something about life.
G. There were trees, flowers and chairs. I thought it was the nicest part of the park.

Why does a woman have the last (and longest) laugh? The answer is that women enjoy a joke more once they get it. If you tell a woman a joke and get a blank look, don’t   41   despair. She’s just taking her time to understand it. But if the punchline(妙語(yǔ))does eventually make her laugh it will be   42   the wait.

Scientists have found that while women are slower than men at getting jokes, they enjoy them more when they truly understand. Research shows that women use their brain more than men to process witty   43   and have less expectation that they will be funny.

When a joke does hit the right   44  , however, women derive more pleasure from it. Scientists asked ten men and ten women to look at dozens of black and white cartoons and rate them on a “funniness scale”. During the process they underwent sophisticated scans that mapped which parts of their brain were lighting up and timed how long it took them to   45   to a joke. The women tended to use   46   parts of their brain. Professor Allan Reiss said: “We found greater activity in the parts of their brain in women, showing women are processing stimuli that   47   language areas of the brain.”

The   48   of a “feelgood” brain region also revealed that men and women have different attitudes to humour. Experts said: “Women appeared to have less expectation of a reward. So they were more pleased about it.” The funnier the cartoon, the more the women’s parts of their brain lit up. This was not the case for men. The women took   49   longer than the men to react to jokes that were funny — but were quicker to spot the “truth”.
