【題目】 Every morning, Ben Mumford starts his school day with math. At the age of ten, he is already working at GCSE level, but he does not always bother to get out of his pajamas (睡衣褲) in time for the class. He reads more books than most of his friends, studies science on the beach, and recently built a go-kart (卡丁車) in a technology lesson. Ben is happy and fulfilled, all, his mother believes, thanks to homeschooling.

Homeschooling is not what it used to be. What emerged in the 1970s as a way for Catholic (信天主教的) parents to infuse (灌輸) religion into their kids’ education is now probably the fastest-growing form of education in the U.K. The number of homeschooled children has risen by about 40 percent over three years. Here are a handful of reasons why homeschooling makes sense in the 21st century.

Contrary to the name, homeschooling takes place in an actual home only a small part of time. A great deal of instruction happens in libraries, museums and community colleges. These experiences have the effect of helping kids mature much more quickly and developing a trait of open-mindedness.

The key idea of homeschooling is that kids need to learn at the speed, and in the style, most appropriate for them. Without formal curriculum to guide their education, homeschoolers get the chance to explore a range of topics that might not be normally offered until high school or college. They can study psychology in the fourth grade, or finance in the eighth grade.

The most common misunderstanding about homeschoolers is that they lack social skills. However, social media makes it convenient for homeschoolers of today to have just as much opportunity to make friends as kids studying in traditional schools. Meanwhile, they do not need to deal with the potential problems of being around kids in a school environment, including bullying, which might result in anxiety and depression.

For most people, school is really good, and it works for them because they learn in the way that school teaches. However, there are so many different ways of learning and processing (處理) information and knowledge. It does not necessarily work for everyone.

1What is the attitude of Ben’s mother towards homeschooling?

A.Favorable.

B.Critical.

C.Indifferent.

D.Doubtful.

2Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A.Homeschoolers grow up more quickly.

B.Homeschoolers have trouble making friends.

C.Homeschooled children learn in the way they like.

D.Homeschooled children just stay at home and get knowledge.

3The underline word “trait” most probably means ______.

A.ability.

B.disadvantage.

C.thought.

D.characteristic.

4What is the best title for the passage?

A.Homeschooling is on the rise.

B.Homeschooling is not for everyone.

C.Homeschoolers can learn freely.

D.Homeschoolers can make more friends.

【題目】 WHAT are scientists? They are often described as gray-haired white-coated dull scholars.

But the world has changed. Young scientists are making their voices heard and releasing their powers on the world stage.

This is also true in China. Rising stars include new materials expert Gong Yongji, university professor Liu Mingzhen, and biologist Wang Ruixue. At the age of 28 in 2018, Wan Ruixue received the 2018 Science & SciLifeLab Prize for Young Scientists. This is a global prize to reward outstanding scientists at an early stage of their careers.

She focuses mainly on biomedicine(生物醫(yī)學(xué))and artificial intelligence(人工智能). "Both are cutting-edge(前沿)technologies at an early stage of development," she said.

"So, I think they have great potential to be developed. I think in the study of cutting-edge technologies, China and other leading countries in the world are standing on the same starting line. And in the study of structural biology, China is likely to become the leader."

She felt it was her fate to become a biologist. "I grew interested in the natural world, when I was very young," she said. In 2009, she entered Sun Yat-sen University.

In her third year at the university, she realized that she wanted to do something related to biomedicine. So she emailed China's top biologist Shi Yigong, hoping to join his lab at Tsinghua University.

Shi recognized her talent and welcomed her. Years of efforts at the lab have paid off. Her research on the high-definition 3D structure of spliceosome led to a scientific breakthrough.

Unlike-many of other young scientists who choose to pursue further study abroad, Wan currently has no plan to go overseas.

【題目】 In the world of entertainment, TV talk shows have undoubtedly flooded every inch of space on daytime television. And anyone who watches them regularly knows that each one varies in style and format. But no two shows are more profoundly opposite in content, while at the same time standing out above the rest, than the Jerry Springer and the Oprah Winfrey shows.

Jerry Springer could easily be considered the king of “trash talk”. The topics on his show are as shocking as shocking can be. For example, the show takes the ever common talk show themes of love, sex, cheating, guilt, hate, conflict and morality to a different level. Clearly, the Jerry Springer show is a display and exploitation of society’s moral catastrophes, yet people are willing to eat up the intriguing predicaments of other people’s lives.

Like Jerry Springer, Oprah Winfrey takes TV talk show to its extreme, but Oprah goes in the opposite direction. The show focuses on the improvement of society and an individual’s quality of life. Topics range from teaching your children responsibility, managing your work week, to getting to know your neighbors.

Compared to Oprah, the Jerry Springer show looks like poisonous waste being dumped on society. Jerry ends every show with a “final word”. He makes a small speech that sums up the entire moral of the show. Hopefully, this is the part where most people will learn something very valuable.

Clean as it is, the Oprah show is not for everyone. The show’s main target audiences are middle-class Americans. Most of these people have the time, money, and stability to deal with life’s tougher problems. Jerry Springer, on the other hand, has more of an association with the young adults of society. These are 18 to 21 year olds whose main troubles in life involve love, relationship, sexmoney and peers. They are the ones who see some value and lessons to be learned underneath the show’s exploitation.

While the two shows are as different as night and day, both have ruled the talk show circuit for many years now. Each one caters to a different audience while both have a strong following from large groups of fans. Ironically, both could also be considered pioneers in the talk show world.

1Though the social problems Jerry Springer talks about appear distasteful, the audience ____.

A.remain indifferent to themB.are ready to face up to them

C.remain fascinated by themD.are willing to get involved in them

2Which of the following is likely to be a topic of the Oprah Winfrey show?

A.A new type of robot.B.Family budget planning.

C.Racist hatred.D.Street violence.

3Despite their different approaches, the two talk shows are both ____.

A.ironicB.instructiveC.sensitiveD.cynical

4We can learn from the passage that the two talk shows ____.

A.are targeted at different audiencesB.exploit the weakness in human nature

C.appear at different times of the dayD.have monopolized the talk show circuit

Dylan performs with guitar, keyboards, and harmonica. Backed by a changing lineup of musicians, he has toured steadily since the late 1980s on what has been called the Never Ending Tour. Since 1994, Dylan has published six books of drawings and paintings, and his work has been exhibited in major art galleries. As a musician, Dylan has sold more than 100 million records, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time.
