【題目】 The origin of coffee? I never really thought about it. When I was a kid, coffee was always around. My parents drank coffee, my grandparents drank coffee, and all the adults I knew drank coffee. I thought I would drink it too when I was older, and of course. I did.

But there must have been a time before coffee. I don't remember coffee making an appearance in any of the Bible(圣經(jīng))stories I learned. Jesus changed water into wine, not coffee. Maybe if coffee had been around, he would have changed some of the water into coffee. Maybe that's what “B. C." in those timelines meant: "before coffee."

According to popular legend, the origin of coffee can be traced to a thousand years ago, when an Abyssinian(Ethiopian)goatherd(牧羊人)named Kaidi observed his goats dancing and jumping. When Kaidi investigated, he saw that the goats were happily eating the red berries(漿果)of an unfamiliar tree. Kaidi decided to try some, and when he did he joined the dancing goats and became “the happiest herder in happy Arabia'.

Some time later, a passing monk(和尚)observed Kaidi and the goats. When Kaidi told him about the berries, the monk thought they might be the answer to his prayers(祈禱). It seems that the monk was always falling asleep in the middle of prayers. When he ate the berries, he stayed awake. The unnamed monk came up with the idea of drying and boiling the berries. It came into the world. His fellow monks loved the new drink because it encouraged them to pray and it tasted good too.

So now that I know about Kaidi and his goats, if someday-in the far, far future, of course someone calls me an "old goat", I'll just smile, take another sip of coffee, and maybe do a little dance.

1Why didn't Jesus change water into coffee?

A.Because Jesus didn't like coffee.

B.Because coffee didn't appear at that time.

C.Because it was not the right time to have coffee.

D.Because Jesus was better at changing water into wine.

1推理判斷題,根據(jù)第二段的Maybe if coffee had been around, he would have changed some of the water into coffee.(也許如果咖啡在身邊,他會(huì)把一些水變成咖啡)可推斷,耶穌沒有把水變成咖啡是因?yàn)樵谀菚r(shí)沒有咖啡。故選B。

2推理判斷題。根據(jù)第二段的 Maybe that's what “B. C." in those timelines meant: "before coffee."( 也許那就是時(shí)間軸上的B.C.意思是“在咖啡之前!钡脑),和最后一段So now that I know about Kaidi and his goats, if someday-in the far, far future, of course someone calls me an "old goat", I'll just smile, take another sip of coffee, and maybe do a little dance.(所以現(xiàn)在我知道了凱迪和他的山羊,如果有一天,在遙遠(yuǎn)的未來,有人叫我“老山羊”,我會(huì)微笑,再喝一口咖啡,也許會(huì)跳一段舞蹈。)可推斷,作者寫這篇文章時(shí),語氣是幽默的。故選D。

3詞句猜測題。根據(jù)上文When he ate the berries, he stayed awake. The unnamed monk came up with the idea of drying and boiling the berries.(當(dāng)他吃漿果時(shí),他保持清醒。這位無名和尚想出了烘干并煮沸漿果的主意。)以及下文His fellow monks loved the new drink because it encouraged them to pray and it tasted good too.(他的同修們愛上了這種新飲料,因?yàn)樗?lì)他們祈禱并且嘗起來也美味)可推斷,煮沸這些漿果后的新飲料面世,it指代這種新飲料。故選A。

【題目】 Pigeons in London have a bad reputation. Some people call them flying rats. And many blame them for causing pollution with their droppings. But now the birds are being used to fight another kind of pollution in this city of 8.5 million.

“The problem for air pollution is that it’s been largely ignored as an issue for a long time,” says Andrea Lee, who works for the London-based environmental organization Client Earth. “People don’t realize how bad it is, and how it actually affects their health.” London’s poor air quality is linked to nearly 10,000 early deaths a year. Lee says, citing(引用)a report released by the city manager last year. If people were better informed about the pollution they’ re breathing, she says, they could pressure the government to do something about it.

Nearby, on a windy hill in London’s Regent’s Park, an experiment is underway that could help—the first week of flights by the Pigeon Air Patrol. It all began when Pierre Duquesnoy, the director for DigitasLBi, a marketing firm, won a London Design Festival contest last year to show how a world problem could be solved using Twitter. Duquesnoy, from France, chose the problem of air pollution.

“Basically, I realized how important the problem was,” he says. “But also I realized that most of the people around me didn’t know anything about it.” Duquesnoy says he wants to better measure pollution, while at the same time making the results accessible to the public through Twitter.

“So”, he wondered, “how could we go across the city quickly collecting as much data as possible?” Drones were his first thought. But it’s illegal to fly them over London. “But pigeons can fly above London, right?” he says. “They live—actually, they are Londoners as well. So, yeah, I thought about using pigeons equipped with mobile apps. And we can use not just street pigeons, but racing pigeons, because they fly pretty quickly and pretty low.”

So it might be time for Londoners to have more respect for their pigeons. The birds may just be helping to improve the quality of the city’s air.

1What can we infer about London’s air quality from Paragraph 2?

A. Londoners are very satisfied with it.

B. The government is trying to improve it.

C. Londoners should pay more attention to it.

D. The government has done a lot to improve it.

2Duquesnoy attended the London Design Festival to _________.

A. entertain Londoners.B. solve a world problem.

C. design a product for sale.D. protect animals like pigeons.

3Why did Duquesnoy give up using drones to fly across London?

A. Because they are too expensive.B. Because they fly too quickly.

C. Because they are forbidden.D. Because they fly too high.

4Which can be the best title for the text?

A. Clean air in London.B. London’s dirty secret.

C. London’s new pollution fighter.D. Causes of air pollution in London.

【題目】Directions: Read the following passage. Sunmarize the main idea and the main points of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

A Father’s Influence Makes for Better Grades

Adolescents from low-income families in particular are more likely than their middle-class peers to underachieve and to drop out of school. Studies have shown that a positive attitude towards school work and the support and encouragement from their parents can help at-risk youngsters to overcome the economic barriers and lack of resources they face. Most of the evidence about the effects of parental involvement comes from research on mothers. Little is known, however, about how adolescents experience their fathers’ warmth and the beliefs and behaviors that are most affected by it.

This new study is part of a larger one focusing on low-income families conducted in four middle schools in the southwestern United States. Data were analyzed from questionnaires completed by 183 sixth-graders about how optimistic and motivated they were about their schoolwork, and how they experienced their fathers. The questionnaires were completed primarily by respondents of Mexican American, African American and European American descent. Their maths and language arts grades were also obtained.

Their findings show how fathers can support their teenagers in ways that result in greater optimism, self-efficacy, and, ultimately, higher achievement at school.

These positive effects extend to both sons and daughters, while in different ways. Experiencing their father’s warmth first influences daughters’ sense of optimism, and then spills over into their feeling more determined and certain about their academic abilities. This in turn leads to better math grades. There is a more direct link between their fathers’ involvement and teenage boys’ belief in their ability to succeed on the academic front. This heightened self-confidence increased their success in English language arts classes.

Suizzo suggests that counselors and educators should encourage fathers to communicate warmth and acceptance to their children, because of the positive influence these emotions have on their well-being.

【題目】 If you’ve done your last year of school but are not yet ready to settle down to life at university or college, why not think about taking a break and having a gap year? Over 200,000 people between the ages of 18 and 25 did this last year.

1 You will become more confident and independent and learn to get on with all sorts of different people during the year, which will help you when you go to university or college. 2 Students who have had a gap year are more likely to be satisfied with their chosen courses and, therefore, are more likely to finish them.

【題目】Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize in no more than 60 words the main idea of the passage and how it is illustrated. Use your own words as far as possible.

The enduring power of print for learning in a digital world

Today's students see themselves as digital natives, the first generation to grow up surrounded by technology like smartphones, tablets and e-readers. We’ve seen students now equipped with school-issued iPads and access to e-textbooks. Given this trend, it might be assumed that students' familiarity and preference for technology translates into better learning outcomes. But more and more studies show that it’s not always the case. So, there are some lessons that can be conveyed to us about print’s place in an increasingly digital world.

We all read for many reasons. Sometimes we're looking for an answer to a very specific question. Other times, we want to browse a newspaper for today’s headlines. As we’re about to pick up an article or text in a printed or digital format, we should keep in mind why we're reading. There’s likely to be a difference in which medium works best for which purpose.

One of the most consistent findings of the studies is that, for some tasks, medium doesn't seem to matter. If all students are being asked to do is to understand and remember the big idea or gist of what they’re reading, there’s no benefit in selecting one medium over another. But when the reading assignment demands more engagement or deeper comprehension, students may be better off reading print. Teachers could make students aware that their ability to comprehend the assignment may be influenced by the medium they choose. This awareness could lessen the difference in students’ judgments of their performance compared with how they actually performed.

In another experiment, researchers were able to create meaningful records of college students based on the way they read and comprehended from printed and digital texts. Among those records, it was found that a select group of undergraduates who actually comprehended better when they moved from print to digital. But they actually read slower when the text was on the computer than when it was in a book. Using this select group as a model, students could possibly be taught or directed to fight the tendency to glide through online texts.
